    Assisting V2V failure recovery using Device-to-Device Communications

    This paper aims to propose a new solution for failure recovery (dead-ends) in Vehicle to Vehicle (V2V) communications through LTE-assisted Device-to-Device communications (D2D). Based on the enhanced networking capabilities offered by Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) architecture, our solution can efficiently assist V2V communications in failure recovery situations. We also derive an analytical model to evaluate generic V2V routing recovery failures. Moreover, the proposed hybrid model is simulated and compared to the generic model under different constrains of worst and best cases of D2D discovery and communication. According to our comparison and simulation results, the hybrid model decreases the delay for alarm message propagation to the destination (typically the Traffic Control Center TCC) through the Road Side Unit (RSU)Comment: 3 page

    Seamless Connectivity Techniques in Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks

    In this chapter we describe the traditional techniques used for seamless connectivity in heterogeneous wireless network environments, and in particular adopt them in VANETs, where V2V and V2I represent the main communication protocols. Section 2 deals with the basic features of Vertical Handover (VHO) in the general context of a hybrid wireless network environment, and it discusses how decision metrics can affect handover performance (i.e. number of handover occurrences, and throughput). Instead, Section 3 briefly introduces two proposed techniques achieving seamless connectivity in VANETs. The first technique is a vertical handover mechanism applied to V2I-only communication environments; it is presented in Section 4 via an analytical model, and main simulated results are shown. The second approach is described in Section 5. It addresses a hybrid vehicular communication protocol (i.e. called as Vehicle-to-X) performing handover between V2V and V2I communications, and vice versa.

    Infrastructure Wi-Fi for connected autonomous vehicle positioning : a review of the state-of-the-art

    In order to realize intelligent vehicular transport networks and self driving cars, connected autonomous vehicles (CAVs) are required to be able to estimate their position to the nearest centimeter. Traditional positioning in CAVs is realized by using a global navigation satellite system (GNSS) such as global positioning system (GPS) or by fusing weighted location parameters from a GNSS with an inertial navigation systems (INSs). In urban environments where Wi-Fi coverage is ubiquitous and GNSS signals experience signal blockage, multipath or non line-of-sight (NLOS) propagation, enterprise or carrier-grade Wi-Fi networks can be opportunistically used for localization or “fused” with GNSS to improve the localization accuracy and precision. While GNSS-free localization systems are in the literature, a survey of vehicle localization from the perspective of a Wi-Fi anchor/infrastructure is limited. Consequently, this review seeks to investigate recent technological advances relating to positioning techniques between an ego vehicle and a vehicular network infrastructure. Also discussed in this paper is an analysis of the location accuracy, complexity and applicability of surveyed literature with respect to intelligent transportation system requirements for CAVs.     Safe Intelligent Driver Assistance System in V2X Communication Environments based on IoT

    In the modern world, power and speed of cars have increased steadily, as traffic continued to increase. At the same time highway-related fatalities and injuries due to road incidents are constantly growing and safety problems come first. Therefore, the development of Driver Assistance Systems (DAS) has become a major issue. Numerous innovations, systems and technologies have been developed in order to improve road transportation and safety. Modern computer vision algorithms enable cars to understand the road environment with low miss rates. A number of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSs), Vehicle Ad-Hoc Networks (VANETs) have been applied in the different cities over the world. Recently, a new global paradigm, known as the Internet of Things (IoT) brings new idea to update the existing solutions. Vehicle-to-Infrastructure communication based on IoT technologies would be a next step in intelligent transportation for the future Internet-of-Vehicles (IoV). The overall purpose of this research was to come up with a scalable IoT solution for driver assistance, which allows to combine safety relevant information for a driver from different types of in-vehicle sensors, in-vehicle DAS, vehicle networks and driver`s gadgets. This study brushed up on the evolution and state-of-the-art of Vehicle Systems. Existing ITSs, VANETs and DASs were evaluated in the research. The study proposed a design approach for the future development of transport systems applying IoT paradigm to the transport safety applications in order to enable driver assistance become part of Internet of Vehicles (IoV). The research proposed the architecture of the Safe Intelligent DAS (SiDAS) based on IoT V2X communications in order to combine different types of data from different available devices and vehicle systems. The research proposed IoT ARM structure for SiDAS, data flow diagrams, protocols. The study proposes several IoT system structures for the vehicle-pedestrian and vehicle-vehicle collision prediction as case studies for the flexible SiDAS framework architecture. The research has demonstrated the significant increase in driver situation awareness by using IoT SiDAS, especially in NLOS conditions. Moreover, the time analysis, taking into account IoT, Cloud, LTE and DSRS latency, has been provided for different collision scenarios, in order to evaluate the overall system latency and ensure applicability for real-time driver emergency notification.     A Cross-layer Approach for MPTCP Path Management in Heterogeneous Vehicular Networks

    Multipath communication has recently arisen as a promising tool to address reliable communication in vehicular networks. The architecture of Multipath TCP (MPTCP) is designed to facilitate concurrent utilization of multiple network interfaces, thereby enabling the system to optimize network throughput. In the context of vehicular environments, MPTCP offers a promising solution for seamless roaming, as it enables the system to maintain a stable connection by switching between available network interfaces. This paper investigates the suitability of MPTCP to support resilient and efficient Vehicleto-Infrastructure (V2I) communication over heterogeneous networks. First, we identify and discuss several challenges that arise in heterogeneous vehicular networks, including issues such as Head-of-Line (HoL) blocking and service interruptions during handover events. Then, we propose a cross-layer path management scheme for MPTCP, that leverages real-time network information to improve the reliability and efficiency of multipath vehicular communication. Our emulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme not only achieves seamless mobility across heterogeneous networks but also significantly reduces handover latency, packet loss, and out-of-order packet delivery. These improvements have a direct impact on the quality of experience for vehicular users, as they lead to lower application layer delay and higher throughput

    Optimization of vehicular networks in smart cities: from agile optimization to learnheuristics and simheuristics

    Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) are a fundamental component of intelligent transportation systems in smart cities. With the support of open and real-time data, these networks of inter-connected vehicles constitute an ‘Internet of vehicles’ with the potential to significantly enhance citizens’ mobility and last-mile delivery in urban, peri-urban, and metropolitan areas. However, the proper coordination and logistics of VANETs raise a number of optimization challenges that need to be solved. After reviewing the state of the art on the concepts of VANET optimization and open data in smart cities, this paper discusses some of the most relevant optimization challenges in this area. Since most of the optimization problems are related to the need for real-time solutions or to the consideration of uncertainty and dynamic environments, the paper also discusses how some VANET challenges can be addressed with the use of agile optimization algorithms and the combination of metaheuristics with simulation and machine learning methods. The paper also offers a numerical analysis that measures the impact of using these optimization techniques in some related problems. Our numerical analysis, based on real data from Open Data Barcelona, demonstrates that the constructive heuristic outperforms the random scenario in the CDP combined with vehicular networks, resulting in maximizing the minimum distance between facilities while meeting capacity requirements with the fewest facilities.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

    Performance enhancement of wireless communication systems through QoS optimisation

    Providing quality of service (QoS) in a communication network is essential but challenging, especially when the complexities of wireless and mobile networks are added. The issues of how to achieve the intended performances, such as reliability and efficiency, at the minimal resource cost for wireless communications and networking have not been fully addressed. In this dissertation, we have investigated different data transmission schemes in different wireless communication systems such as wireless sensor network, device-to-device communications and vehicular networks. We have focused on cooperative communications through relaying and proposed a method to maximise the QoS performance by finding optimum transmission schemes. Furthermore, the performance trade-offs that we have identified show that both cooperative and non-cooperative transmission schemes could have advantages as well as disadvantages in offering QoS. In the analytical approach, we have derived the closed-form expressions of the outage probability, throughput and energy efficiency for different transmission schemes in wireless and mobile networks, in addition to applying other QoS metrics such as packet delivery ratio, packet loss rate and average end-to-end delay. We have shown that multi-hop relaying through cooperative communications can outperform non-cooperative transmission schemes in many cases. Furthermore, we have also analysed the optimum required transmission power for different transmission ranges to obtain the maximum energy efficiency or maximum achievable data rate with the minimum outage probability and bit error rate in cellular network. The proposed analytical and modelling approaches are used in wireless sensor networks, device-to-device communications and vehicular networks. The results generated have suggested an adaptive transmission strategy where the system can decide when and how each of transmission schemes should be adopted to achieve the best performance in varied conditions. In addition, the system can also choose proper transmitting power levels under the changing transmission distance to increase and maintain the network reliability and system efficiency accordingly. Consequently, these functions will lead to the optimized QoS in a given network

    A comprehensive survey of V2X cybersecurity mechanisms and future research paths

    Recent advancements in vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication have notably improved existing transport systems by enabling increased connectivity and driving autonomy levels. The remarkable benefits of V2X connectivity come inadvertently with challenges which involve security vulnerabilities and breaches. Addressing security concerns is essential for seamless and safe operation of mission-critical V2X use cases. This paper surveys current literature on V2X security and provides a systematic and comprehensive review of the most relevant security enhancements to date. An in-depth classification of V2X attacks is first performed according to key security and privacy requirements. Our methodology resumes with a taxonomy of security mechanisms based on their proactive/reactive defensive approach, which helps identify strengths and limitations of state-of-the-art countermeasures for V2X attacks. In addition, this paper delves into the potential of emerging security approaches leveraging artificial intelligence tools to meet security objectives. Promising data-driven solutions tailored to tackle security, privacy and trust issues are thoroughly discussed along with new threat vectors introduced inevitably by these enablers. The lessons learned from the detailed review of existing works are also compiled and highlighted.
