Roles and responsibilities in agile ICT for development
This paper examines the different roles in designing interactive software in a ICT for development context.
Using experiences from a participatory action research project, in which we used agile methods to design and
deploy an system to support ‘agricultural information flow’ for a co-operative of small farmers in rural India, we
identify points of difference between the roles in standard descriptions of agile software methods and the roles as
they emerged in our project. A key finding is the critical role played by a ‘Development Project Manager’ in
facilitating dialogue, orchestrating the activities of other actors and in building the capabilities and confidence of
all the participants in joint action
International conference on software engineering and knowledge engineering: Session chair
The Thirtieth International Conference on Software Engineering and Knowledge Engineering (SEKE 2018) will be held at the Hotel Pullman, San Francisco Bay, USA, from July 1 to July 3, 2018. SEKE2018 will also be dedicated in memory of Professor Lofti Zadeh, a great scholar, pioneer and leader in fuzzy sets theory and soft computing.
The conference aims at bringing together experts in software engineering and knowledge engineering to discuss on relevant results in either software engineering or knowledge engineering or both. Special emphasis will be put on the transference of methods between both domains. The theme this year is soft computing in software engineering & knowledge engineering. Submission of papers and demos are both welcome
Carving out new business models in a small company through contextual ambidexterity: the case of a sustainable company
Business model innovation (BMI) and organizational ambidexterity have been pointed out as mechanisms for companies achieving sustainability. However, especially considering small and medium enterprises (SMEs), there is a lack of studies demonstrating how to combine these mechanisms. Tackling such a gap, this study seeks to understand how SMEs can ambidextrously manage BMI. Our aim is to provide a practical artifact, accessible to SMEs, to operationalize BMI through organizational ambidexterity. To this end, we conducted our study under the design science research to, first, build an artifact for operationalizing contextual ambidexterity for business model innovation. Then, we used an in-depth case study with a vegan fashion small e-commerce to evaluate the practical outcomes of the artifact. Our findings show that the company improves its business model while, at the same time, designs a new business model and monetizes it. Thus, our approach was able to take the first steps in the direction of operationalizing contextual ambidexterity for business model innovation in small and medium enterprises, democratizing the concept. We contribute to theory by connecting different literature strands and to practice by creating an artifact to assist managemen
Estimating, planning and managing Agile Web development projects under a value-based perspective
Context: The processes of estimating, planning and managing are crucial for software development projects,
since the results must be related to several business strategies. The broad expansion of the Internet
and the global and interconnected economy make Web development projects be often characterized by
expressions like delivering as soon as possible, reducing time to market and adapting to undefined
requirements. In this kind of environment, traditional methodologies based on predictive techniques
sometimes do not offer very satisfactory results. The rise of Agile methodologies and practices has
provided some useful tools that, combined with Web Engineering techniques, can help to establish a
framework to estimate, manage and plan Web development projects.
Objective: This paper presents a proposal for estimating, planning and managing Web projects, by
combining some existing Agile techniques with Web Engineering principles, presenting them as an
unified framework which uses the business value to guide the delivery of features.
Method: The proposal is analyzed by means of a case study, including a real-life project, in order to obtain
relevant conclusions.
Results: The results achieved after using the framework in a development project are presented, including
interesting results on project planning and estimation, as well as on team productivity throughout the
project.
Conclusion: It is concluded that the framework can be useful in order to better manage Web-based
projects, through a continuous value-based estimation and management process.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad TIN2013-46928-C3-3-
HTML5-pohjaisten hybridimobiilisovellusten käyttöliittymätestauksen automatisoinnin hyödyllisyys: Tapaustutkimus
While the first research papers on GUI test automation date back to the 1990s, its use in the software industry is still relatively rare. Traditionally, GUIs have been tested manually only and software automation has focused on the lower levels of testing such as unit testing or integration testing. The main reason for that is the complexity of GUIs compared to the lower software components. However, the manual testing of GUIs is a tedious and time-consuming process that involves repetitive and dull tasks, since the same tests need to be executed repeatedly on every testing iteration of the software under testing.
The main goal with GUI test automation is to automate those steps and by doing so improve the cost-efficiency of the testing process and free the testers’ time on more meaningful and useful tasks. The previous research on GUI test automation reveals contradicting results. Some of the research has found GUI test automation to be both beneficial and cost-efficient and while others have found results suggesting the exact opposite.
The contradicting results from previous research and the unclarity on the benefits, challenges, limitations and impediments of GUI test automation worked as the main driver for this thesis. The research was conducted as a combination of a literature review on the subject and a case study of three HTML5-based hybrid mobile application projects in the mobile development unit of one of the biggest IT companies in Finland.Käyttöliittymätestiautomaation käyttö yrityksissä on verrattain harvinaista, vaikka ensimmäiset tutkimukset aiheesta ovat 1990-luvulta. Perinteisesti käyttöliittymiä on testattu manuaalisesti ja ohjelmistotestausautomaatio keskitetty ohjelmiston alempien tasojen testaamiseen yksikkö- ja integraatiotesteillä. Pääsyy tähän on käyttöliittymien monimutkaisuus verrattuna alemman tason ohjelmistokomponentteihin.
Human Factors in Agile Software Development
Through our four years experiments on students' Scrum based agile software
development (ASD) process, we have gained deep understanding into the human
factors of agile methodology. We designed an agile project management tool -
the HASE collaboration development platform to support more than 400 students
self-organized into 80 teams to practice ASD. In this thesis, Based on our
experiments, simulations and analysis, we contributed a series of solutions and
insights in this researches, including 1) a Goal Net based method to enhance
goal and requirement management for ASD process, 2) a novel Simple Multi-Agent
Real-Time (SMART) approach to enhance intelligent task allocation for ASD
process, 3) a Fuzzy Cognitive Maps (FCMs) based method to enhance emotion and
morale management for ASD process, 4) the first large scale in-depth empirical
insights on human factors in ASD process which have not yet been well studied
by existing research, and 5) the first to identify ASD process as a
human-computation system that exploit human efforts to perform tasks that
computers are not good at solving. On the other hand, computers can assist
human decision making in the ASD process.Comment: Book Draf
