    Escaping RGBland: Selecting Colors for Statistical Graphics

    Statistical graphics are often augmented by the use of color coding information contained in some variable. When this involves the shading of areas (and not only points or lines) - e.g., as in bar plots, pie charts, mosaic displays or heatmaps - it is important that the colors are perceptually based and do not introduce optical illusions or systematic bias. Here, we discuss how the perceptually-based Hue-Chroma-Luminance (HCL) color space can be used for deriving suitable color palettes for coding categorical data (qualitative palettes) and numerical variables (sequential and diverging palettes).Series: Research Report Series / Department of Statistics and Mathematic

    Quantum invariants of 3-manifolds via link surgery presentations and non-semi-simple categories

    In this paper we construct invariants of 3-manifolds "\`a la Reshetikhin-Turaev" in the setting of non-semi-simple ribbon tensor categories. We give concrete examples of such categories which lead to a family of 3-manifold invariants indexed by the integers. We prove this family of invariants has several notable features, including: they can be computed via a set of axioms, they distinguish homotopically equivalent manifolds that the standard Reshetikhin-Turaev-Witten invariants do not, and they allow the statement of a version of the Volume Conjecture and a proof of this conjecture for an infinite class of links.Comment: 46 pages, 45 figures, new introduction, some misprints corrected and an example detailed.     In the frame of our national project “Development of Natural Science Competences” we have prepared physical educational materials, which main goal is to indicate better didactic strategies for the systematic development of pupils\u27 natural science competences, one of them being the digital competence. In this contribution we describe two sets of representative materials, one for primary and the other one for secondary school pupils. The first set of materials is dedicated to the realization of group experimental work on the subject of electric circuits and the second set is a text- and web-based learning materials about optical phenomena in the atmosphere. A common feature of both sets of materials is that pupils are requested to prepare PowerPoint presentations of their new findings and present them to their schoolfellows. Our materials are supplied with instructions about a proper creation of slides and a suitable realization of the oral presentation.U okviru našeg nacionalnog projekta „Razvoj prirodoslovnih kompetencija“ pripremili smo obrazovne materijale za nastavu fizike, kojima je glavni cilj što bolje prikazati didaktičke strategije za sustavni razvoj prirodoslovnih kompetencija učenika, a jedna od njih je digitalna kompetencija. U ovom radu opisujemo dva reprezentativna seta obrazovnih materijala, jedan za učenike osnovnih i drugi za učenike srednjih škola. Prvi set materijala je posvećen eksperimentalnom radu sa temom strujnih krugova, dok se drugi set temelji na učenju o optičkim pojavama u atmosferi putem teksta i Interneta. Zajednička značajka oba seta materijala je u tome, da učenici moraju o novo stečenim znanjima pripremiti PowerPoint prezentacije i potom ih prezentirati svojim kolegama u razredu. Materijali sadrže točne upute za izradu slajdova kao i upute za usmeno izlaganje

    The Final Year Online Presentation Creator and Uploader system is a project that will help to ease final year students in creating and preparing their presentations slides. This system will be a web based system that can be log in anywhere at anytime. Each student will need to registers their log in id or username and password for first time usage. This system is created due to few problems that occur during the previous final year students’ presentation preparations. They might overlook the unnecessary content and left out the important ones. With the system, it will help them to be more prepared and boost out their confident level indirectly because the system has provide guidelines to be followed
