    Digital Color Imaging

    This paper surveys current technology and research in the area of digital color imaging. In order to establish the background and lay down terminology, fundamental concepts of color perception and measurement are first presented us-ing vector-space notation and terminology. Present-day color recording and reproduction systems are reviewed along with the common mathematical models used for representing these devices. Algorithms for processing color images for display and communication are surveyed, and a forecast of research trends is attempted. An extensive bibliography is provided

    Pushing the Limits of 3D Color Printing: Error Diffusion with Translucent Materials

    Accurate color reproduction is important in many applications of 3D printing, from design prototypes to 3D color copies or portraits. Although full color is available via other technologies, multi-jet printers have greater potential for graphical 3D printing, in terms of reproducing complex appearance properties. However, to date these printers cannot produce full color, and doing so poses substantial technical challenges, from the shear amount of data to the translucency of the available color materials. In this paper, we propose an error diffusion halftoning approach to achieve full color with multi-jet printers, which operates on multiple isosurfaces or layers within the object. We propose a novel traversal algorithm for voxel surfaces, which allows the transfer of existing error diffusion algorithms from 2D printing.     High dynamic range display systems

    High contrast ratio (CR) enables a display system to faithfully reproduce the real objects. However, achieving high contrast, especially high ambient contrast (ACR), is a challenging task. In this dissertation, two display systems with high CR are discussed: high ACR augmented reality (AR) display and high dynamic range (HDR) display. For an AR display, we improved its ACR by incorporating a tunable transmittance liquid crystal (LC) film. The film has high tunable transmittance range, fast response time, and is fail-safe. To reduce the weight and size of a display system, we proposed a functional reflective polarizer, which can also help people with color vision deficiency. As for the HDR display, we improved all three aspects of the hardware requirements: contrast ratio, color gamut and bit-depth. By stacking two liquid crystal display (LCD) panels together, we have achieved CR over one million to one, 14-bit depth with 5V operation voltage, and pixel-by-pixel local dimming. To widen color gamut, both photoluminescent and electroluminescent quantum dots (QDs) have been investigated. Our analysis shows that with QD approach, it is possible to achieve over 90% of the Rec. 2020 color gamut for a HDR display. Another goal of an HDR display is to achieve the 12-bit perceptual quantizer (PQ) curve covering from 0 to 10,000 nits. Our experimental results indicate that this is difficult with a single LCD panel because of the sluggish response time. To overcome this challenge, we proposed a method to drive the light emitting diode (LED) backlight and the LCD panel simultaneously. Besides relatively fast response time, this approach can also mitigate the imaging noise. Finally yet importantly, we improved the display pipeline by using a HDR gamut mapping approach to display HDR contents adaptively based on display specifications.     Image-Processing Techniques for the Creation of Presentation-Quality Astronomical Images

    The quality of modern astronomical data, the power of modern computers and the agility of current image-processing software enable the creation of high-quality images in a purely digital form. The combination of these technological advancements has created a new ability to make color astronomical images. And in many ways it has led to a new philosophy towards how to create them. A practical guide is presented on how to generate astronomical images from research data with powerful image-processing programs. These programs use a layering metaphor that allows for an unlimited number of astronomical datasets to be combined in any desired color scheme, creating an immense parameter space to be explored using an iterative approach. Several examples of image creation are presented. A philosophy is also presented on how to use color and composition to create images that simultaneously highlight scientific detail and are aesthetically appealing. This philosophy is necessary because most datasets do not correspond to the wavelength range of sensitivity of the human eye. The use of visual grammar, defined as the elements which affect the interpretation of an image, can maximize the richness and detail in an image while maintaining scientific accuracy. By properly using visual grammar, one can imply qualities that a two-dimensional image intrinsically cannot show, such as depth, motion and energy. In addition, composition can be used to engage viewers and keep them interested for a longer period of time.     Analysis of image noise in multispectral color acquisition

    The design of a system for multispectral image capture will be influenced by the imaging application, such as image archiving, vision research, illuminant modification or improved (trichromatic) color reproduction. A key aspect of the system performance is the effect of noise, or error, when acquiring multiple color image records and processing of the data. This research provides an analysis that allows the prediction of the image-noise characteristics of systems for the capture of multispectral images. The effects of both detector noise and image processing quantization on the color information are considered, as is the correlation between the errors in the component signals. The above multivariate error-propagation analysis is then applied to an actual prototype system. Sources of image noise in both digital camera and image processing are related to colorimetric errors. Recommendations for detector characteristics and image processing for future systems are then discussed

    Accurate and Computational: A review of color reproduction in Full-color 3D printing

    As functional 3D printing becomes more popular with industrial manufacturing applications, it is time to start discussing high-fidelity appearance reproduction of 3D objects, particularly in faithful colors. To date, there is only limited research on accurate color reproduction and on universal color reproduction method for different color 3D printing materials. To systematically understand colorization principles and color transmission in color 3D printing, an exhaustive literature review is stated to show the state of the art of color reproduction methods for full-color 3D printing, such as optical parameter modeling, colorimetric difference evaluation, computer aided colorization and voxel droplet jetting. Meanwhile, the challenges in developing an accurate color reproduction framework suitable for different printing materials are fully analyzed in this literature review. In full-color 3D printing, coloring, rendering and acquisition constitute the core issues for accurate color reproduction, and their specific concepts are explained in concrete examples. Finally, the future perspectives of a universal color reproduction framework for accurate full-color 3D printing are discussed, which can overcome the limitations of printing materials, combined with computational boundary contoning

    Encoding high dynamic range and wide color gamut imagery

    In dieser Dissertation wird ein szenischer Bewegtbilddatensatz mit erweitertem Dynamikumfang (High Dynamic Range, HDR) und großem Farbumfang (Wide Color Gamut, WCG) eingefĂŒhrt und es werden Modelle zur Kodierung von HDR und WCG Bildern vorgestellt. Die objektive und visuelle Evaluation neuer HDR und WCG Bildverarbeitungsalgorithmen, Kompressionsverfahren und BildwiedergabegerĂ€te erfordert einen Referenzdatensatz hoher QualitĂ€t. Daher wird ein neuer HDR- und WCG-Video-Datensatz mit einem Dynamikumfang von bis zu 18 fotografischen Blenden eingefĂŒhrt. Er enthĂ€lt inszenierte und dokumentarische Szenen. Die einzelnen Szenen sind konzipiert um eine Herausforderung fĂŒr Tone Mapping Operatoren, Gamut Mapping Algorithmen, Kompressionscodecs und HDR und WCG BildanzeigegerĂ€te darzustellen. Die Szenen sind mit professionellem Licht, Maske und Filmausstattung aufgenommen. Um einen cinematischen Bildeindruck zu erhalten, werden digitale Filmkameras mit ‘Super-35 mm’ SensorgrĂ¶ĂŸe verwendet. Der zusĂ€tzliche Informationsgehalt von HDR- und WCG-Videosignalen erfordert im Vergleich zu Signalen mit herkömmlichem Dynamikumfang eine neue und effizientere Signalkodierung. Ein Farbraum fĂŒr HDR und WCG Video sollte nicht nur effizient quantisieren, sondern wegen der unterschiedlichen Monitoreigenschaften auf der EmpfĂ€ngerseite auch fĂŒr die Dynamik- und Farbumfangsanpassung geeignet sein. Bisher wurden Methoden fĂŒr die Quantisierung von HDR Luminanzsignalen vorgeschlagen. Es fehlt jedoch noch ein entsprechendes Modell fĂŒr Farbdifferenzsignale. Es werden daher zwei neue FarbrĂ€ume eingefĂŒhrt, die sich sowohl fĂŒr die effiziente Kodierung von HDR und WCG Signalen als auch fĂŒr die Dynamik- und Farbumfangsanpassung eignen. Diese FarbrĂ€ume werden mit existierenden HDR und WCG Farbsignalkodierungen des aktuellen Stands der Technik verglichen. Die vorgestellten Kodierungsschemata erlauben es, HDR- und WCG-Video mittels drei FarbkanĂ€len mit 12 Bits tonaler Auflösung zu quantisieren, ohne dass Quantisierungsartefakte sichtbar werden. WĂ€hrend die Speicherung und Übertragung von HDR und WCG Video mit 12-Bit Farbtiefe pro Kanal angestrebt wird, unterstĂŒtzen aktuell verbreitete Dateiformate, Videoschnittstellen und Kompressionscodecs oft nur niedrigere Bittiefen. Um diese existierende Infrastruktur fĂŒr die HDR VideoĂŒbertragung und -speicherung nutzen zu können, wird ein neues bildinhaltsabhĂ€ngiges Quantisierungsschema eingefĂŒhrt. Diese Quantisierungsmethode nutzt Bildeigenschaften wie Rauschen und Textur um die benötigte tonale Auflösung fĂŒr die visuell verlustlose Quantisierung zu schĂ€tzen. Die vorgestellte Methode erlaubt es HDR Video mit einer Bittiefe von 10 Bits ohne sichtbare Unterschiede zum Original zu quantisieren und kommt mit weniger Rechenkraft im Vergleich zu aktuellen HDR Bilddifferenzmetriken aus

    Color transformation modeling for printed images using interpolation based on barycentric coordinates

    This document is a report on the research of a potentially superior method of color image transformation for producing rapid and accurate printed color output from a digitized color image. The primary objective is to reduce the complexities, inaccuracies, objectionable artifacts, and processing time common to current methods of color modeling. A new method of vector-corrected mathematical modeling combined with improved color space interpolation is studied. This achievement allows for rapid automatic closed-loop color-match calibration between image capture and output devices. Currently, digital image creation or manipulation systems rely on image proof printing which is slow and often of poor color fidelity or proprietary. The ideal system would provide optimum color reproduction fidelity and rapid proof printing at a low cost. Existing systems often rely on mathematical models for image con version for printing. These models are usually a bottleneck in the proofing process and are not accurate enough for many applica tions. Increasing their accuracy rapidly increases processing time to the point of impracticality well before graphic arts quality levels are achieved. A common solution to this problem in larger systems is a massive and tediously generated color look-up table based on actual measured print samples. This method is costly and does not readily accommodate printing process changes such as paper grade or ink color. Attempts to reduce the size of these look-up tables and the large quantity of required sample measurements have been disappointing. In this thesis, new methods will be reported which should allow practical small-system color proof printing with excellent color fidelity and rapid processing. By eliminating common problems associated with color space interpolation, these new methods make closed-loop control practical with a relatively small quantity of sample measurements which can be automatically printed, scanned, and incorporated into conversion processes
