This article describes a Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC)-funded project, conducted by a cross-disciplinary team, examining trust in information resources in the web environment employing a literature review and online Delphi study with follow-up community consultation. The project aimed to try to explain how users assess or assert trust in their use of resources in the web environment; to examine how perceptions of trust influence the behavior of information users; and to consider whether ways of asserting trust in information resources could assist the development of information literacy. A trust model was developed from the analysis of the literature and discussed in the consultation. Elements comprising the i-Trust model include external factors, internal factors and user's cognitive state. This article gives a brief overview of the JISC funded project which has now produced the i-Trust model (Pickard et. al. 2010) and focuses on issues of particular relevance for information providers and practitioners

Using the right information: A theoretical explanation of user motivation to validate web-content

Using unverified information can have many dire consequences especially when used in decision making or tasks. Evidence of gaffes caused by using deficient information abound. The increasing dependence of users on the web as a source of information raises the risk of using obsolete, inaccurate, and unreliable content it is unverified. Though the web serves as an information store and archive, the nature of its information content is sticky due to the lack of centralized controls, regulation, and content gatekeeping. Using the regulatory focus theory as a lens and augmenting with propositions from attributional processing, this study seeks to theoretically understand how users can be motivated to validate web content and the moderating conditions

Kata kunci: Sumber online, makalah penelitian Abstract: The purpose of this research is to find out whether or not the students select credible online resource, and use the credible online resources in their research papers. This research also aimed to find out how the students integrate online resources into research paper, particularly, using paraphrase, summary, and direct quotations appropriately. Using case study method, the researcher interviewed 4 sixth semester students of English Education Study Program, academic year 2012/2013, and analyzed their research papers. The data revealed that students applied 3 criteria in selecting credible online resources: authority, currency, and content. The data also shows that most of the online resources were integrated inappropriately into students’ research paper. This occurred because the students encountered some difficulties, for instance, the difficulty of rephrasing online resources by using their own words, and the difficulty in retaining the meaning of the texts of online sources that were used as references. This study presents an analysis of 100 syllabi of creditbearing information literacy (IL) courses from colleges and universities across the United States. The objective was to determine how IL courses were being presented and taught in academic settings; how many credits were offered; the duration of the course; platform used to teach - face to face, online, or other methods; how students were graded; what types of assignments were used, and what topics were being taught and how. The authors hypothesized that over the course of six years since the original study, syllabi would show significant changes as technology has continued to dominate and expand the library world. Finally, the study looks to see how national IL courses address the Association of College and Research Libraries’ (ACRL) Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education (the Standards). The importance of this research was to guide our own interest in developing a credit-bearing IL course as well as to provide this information for others in our profession who share an interest in this area
