On multi-user EXIT chart analysis aided turbo-detected MBER beamforming designs
Abstract—This paper studies the mutual information transfer characteristics of a novel iterative soft interference cancellation (SIC) aided beamforming receiver communicating over both additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and multipath slow fading channels. Based on the extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) chart technique, we investigate the convergence behavior of an iterative minimum bit error rate (MBER) multiuser detection (MUD) scheme as a function of both the system parameters and channel conditions in comparison to the SIC aided minimum mean square error (SIC-MMSE) MUD. Our simulation results show that the EXIT chart analysis is sufficiently accurate for the MBER MUD. Quantitatively, a two-antenna system was capable of supporting up to K=6 users at Eb/N0=3dB, even when their angular separation was relatively low, potentially below 20?. High Rate Single-Symbol Decodable Precoded DSTBCs for Cooperative Networks
Distributed Orthogonal Space-Time Block Codes (DOSTBCs) achieving full
diversity order and single-symbol ML decodability have been introduced recently
for cooperative networks and an upper-bound on the maximal rate of such codes
along with code constructions has been presented. In this report, we introduce
a new class of Distributed STBCs called Semi-orthogonal Precoded Distributed
Single-Symbol Decodable STBCs (S-PDSSDC) wherein, the source performs
co-ordinate interleaving of information symbols appropriately before
transmitting it to all the relays. It is shown that DOSTBCs are a special case
of S-PDSSDCs. A special class of S-PDSSDCs having diagonal covariance matrix at
the destination is studied and an upper bound on the maximal rate of such codes
is derived. The bounds obtained are approximately twice larger than that of the
DOSTBCs. A systematic construction of S-PDSSDCs is presented when the number of
relays . The constructed codes are shown to achieve the upper-bound
on the rate when is of the form 0 modulo 4 or 3 modulo 4. For the rest of
the values of , the constructed codes are shown to have rates higher than
that of DOSTBCs. It is also shown that S-PDSSDCs cannot be constructed with any
form of linear processing at the relays when the source doesn't perform
co-ordinate interleaving of the information symbols.Comment: A technical report of DRDO-IISc Programme on Advanced Research in

Secure OFDM System Design for Wireless Communications
Wireless communications is widely employed in modern society and plays an increasingly important role in people\u27s daily life. The broadcast nature of radio propagation, however, causes wireless communications particularly vulnerable to malicious attacks, and leads to critical challenges in securing the wireless transmission. Motivated by the insufficiency of traditional approaches to secure wireless communications, physical layer security that is emerging as a complement to the traditional upper-layer security mechanisms is investigated in this dissertation. Five novel techniques toward the physical layer security of wireless communications are proposed. The first two techniques focus on the security risk assessment in wireless networks to enable a situation-awareness based transmission protection. The third and fourth techniques utilize wireless medium characteristics to enhance the built-in security of wireless communication systems, so as to prevent passive eavesdropping. The last technique provides an embedded confidential signaling link for secure transmitter-receiver interaction in OFDM systems

Transmit Power Minimization for MIMO Systems of Exponential Average BER with Fixed Outage Probability
This document is the Accepted Manuscript version of the following article: Dian-Wu Yue, and Yichuang Sun, ‘Transmit Power Minimization for MIMO Systems of Exponential Average BER with Fixed Outage Probability’, Wireless Personal Communications, Vol. 90 (4): 1951-1970, first available online on 20 June 2016. Under embargo. Embargo end date: 20 June 2017. The final publication is available at Springer via https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007%2Fs11277-016-3432-4This paper is concerned with a wireless multiple-antenna system operating in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) fading channels with channel state information being known at both transmitter and receiver. By spatiotemporal subchannel selection and power control, it aims to minimize the average transmit power (ATP) of the MIMO system while achieving an exponential type of average bit error rate (BER) for each data stream. Under the constraints on each subchannel that individual outage probability and average BER are given, based on a traditional upper bound and a dynamic upper bound of Q function, two closed-form ATP expressions are derived, respectively, which can result in two different power allocation schemes. Numerical results are provided to validate the theoretical analysis, and show that the power allocation scheme with the dynamic upper bound can achieve more power savings than the one with the traditional upper bound.Peer reviewe
