    When Things Matter: A Data-Centric View of the Internet of Things

    With the recent advances in radio-frequency identification (RFID), low-cost wireless sensor devices, and Web technologies, the Internet of Things (IoT) approach has gained momentum in connecting everyday objects to the Internet and facilitating machine-to-human and machine-to-machine communication with the physical world. While IoT offers the capability to connect and integrate both digital and physical entities, enabling a whole new class of applications and services, several significant challenges need to be addressed before these applications and services can be fully realized. A fundamental challenge centers around managing IoT data, typically produced in dynamic and volatile environments, which is not only extremely large in scale and volume, but also noisy, and continuous. This article surveys the main techniques and state-of-the-art research efforts in IoT from data-centric perspectives, including data stream processing, data storage models, complex event processing, and searching in IoT. Open research issues for IoT data management are also discussed

    Efficient Data Streaming Analytic Designs for Parallel and Distributed Processing

    Today, ubiquitously sensing technologies enable inter-connection of physical\ua0objects, as part of Internet of Things (IoT), and provide massive amounts of\ua0data streams. In such scenarios, the demand for timely analysis has resulted in\ua0a shift of data processing paradigms towards continuous, parallel, and multitier\ua0computing. However, these paradigms are followed by several challenges\ua0especially regarding analysis speed, precision, costs, and deterministic execution.\ua0This thesis studies a number of such challenges to enable efficient continuous\ua0processing of streams of data in a decentralized and timely manner.In the first part of the thesis, we investigate techniques aiming at speeding\ua0up the processing without a loss in precision. The focus is on continuous\ua0machine learning/data mining types of problems, appearing commonly in IoT\ua0applications, and in particular continuous clustering and monitoring, for which\ua0we present novel algorithms; (i) Lisco, a sequential algorithm to cluster data\ua0points collected by LiDAR (a distance sensor that creates a 3D mapping of the\ua0environment), (ii) p-Lisco, the parallel version of Lisco to enhance pipeline- and\ua0data-parallelism of the latter, (iii) pi-Lisco, the parallel and incremental version\ua0to reuse the information and prevent redundant computations, (iv) g-Lisco, a\ua0generalized version of Lisco to cluster any data with spatio-temporal locality\ua0by leveraging the implicit ordering of the data, and (v) Amble, a continuous\ua0monitoring solution in an industrial process.In the second part, we investigate techniques to reduce the analysis costs\ua0in addition to speeding up the processing while also supporting deterministic\ua0execution. The focus is on problems associated with availability and utilization\ua0of computing resources, namely reducing the volumes of data, involving\ua0concurrent computing elements, and adjusting the level of concurrency. For\ua0that, we propose three frameworks; (i) DRIVEN, a framework to continuously\ua0compress the data and enable efficient transmission of the compact data in the\ua0processing pipeline, (ii) STRATUM, a framework to continuously pre-process\ua0the data before transferring the later to upper tiers for further processing, and\ua0(iii) STRETCH, a framework to enable instantaneous elastic reconfigurations\ua0to adjust intra-node resources at runtime while ensuring determinism.The algorithms and frameworks presented in this thesis contribute to an\ua0efficient processing of data streams in an online manner while utilizing available\ua0resources. Using extensive evaluations, we show the efficiency and achievements\ua0of the proposed techniques for IoT representative applications that involve a\ua0wide spectrum of platforms, and illustrate that the performance of our work\ua0exceeds that of state-of-the-art techniques

    A Hierarchical Rate Splitting Strategy for FDD Massive MIMO under Imperfect CSIT

    In a multiuser MIMO broadcast channel, the rate performance is affected by the multiuser interference when the Channel State Information at the Transmitter (CSIT) is imperfect. To tackle the interference problem, a Rate-Splitting (RS) approach has been proposed recently, which splits one user's message into a common and a private part, and superimposes the common message on top of the private messages. The common message is drawn from a public codebook and should be decoded by all users. In this paper, we propose a novel and general framework, denoted as Hierarchical Rate Splitting (HRS), that is particularly suited to FDD massive MIMO systems. HRS simultaneously transmits private messages intended to each user and two kinds of common messages that can be decoded by all users and by a subset of users, respectively. We analyse the asymptotic sum rate of HRS under imperfect CSIT. A closed-form power allocation is derived which provides insights into the effects of system parameters. Finally, simulation results validate the significant sum rate gain of HRS over various baselines.Comment: Accepted paper at IEEE CAMAD 201

Multimedia information systems play a central role in many business activities. They represent a very special class complex computing systems. This paper surveys a special type of multimedia information systems: multimedia news systems. Multimedia news systems deal with architectures to manage complex multimedia news databases, online presentation and distribution services or the integration of several existing services to meta-services using intelligent news retrieval engines. The leading presentation platform in multimedia news presentation is news networks providing television services and Internet content distribution. The primary focus is on advanced multimedia news systems infrastructure, document standards, application architecture and principles for multimedia news on the Web that suggest long-term trends in this increasingly important area.multimedia, information systems, business applications

    Cross-Layer Peer-to-Peer Track Identification and Optimization Based on Active Networking

    P2P applications appear to emerge as ultimate killer applications due to their ability to construct highly dynamic overlay topologies with rapidly-varying and unpredictable traffic dynamics, which can constitute a serious challenge even for significantly over-provisioned IP networks. As a result, ISPs are facing new, severe network management problems that are not guaranteed to be addressed by statically deployed network engineering mechanisms. As a first step to a more complete solution to these problems, this paper proposes a P2P measurement, identification and optimisation architecture, designed to cope with the dynamicity and unpredictability of existing, well-known and future, unknown P2P systems. The purpose of this architecture is to provide to the ISPs an effective and scalable approach to control and optimise the traffic produced by P2P applications in their networks. This can be achieved through a combination of different application and network-level programmable techniques, leading to a crosslayer identification and optimisation process. These techniques can be applied using Active Networking platforms, which are able to quickly and easily deploy architectural components on demand. This flexibility of the optimisation architecture is essential to address the rapid development of new P2P protocols and the variation of known protocols
