Numerical Investigation of Bubble Movement in Magnetic Nanofluids

Department of Mechanical EngineeringIn this study, the idea to generate electrical energy by using waste heat is suggested. In this idea, the electrical energy can be generated by a magnetic nanofluid and bubble movement. Thus, bubble movement in a magnetic fluid is numerically investigated using the commercial CFD package COMSOL Multiphysics for effective energy generation. The slug characteristics are also investigated because it can be generated by merging each bubble. The level-set method and phase-field method are used to simulate the bubble and slug movement, respectively. For the investigation, EFH1 and EFH3 are selected as working fluidsthey are commercial magnetic fluids manufactured by Ferrotec, and each fluid contains different amounts of magnetic particles. The solvers are validated by comparing the numerical results with previous research studies and experimental data for reliable results. The properties of a fluid can be changed by solid particles if the particles are dispersed in the fluid. These particles can affect the bubble and slug characteristics, such as shape, velocity and wake. Thus, the effect of solid particles is first studied by observing the bubble and slug movement in each magnetic fluid. In the slug investigation, the effects of some parameters are also studied, such as slug length and liquid backflow. The patterns of bubble and slug movement are investigated to predict the effective condition for the energy generation. The effective bubble and slug movements are predicted by evaluating the disturbance of the surrounding magnetic fluid for each flow pattern. A magnetic force can be created, and it can affect any phenomena when the magnetic field is applied to the system. Thus, the effect of the magnetic force is also investigated because the magnetic field should be applied to the system for the electrical energy generation. Finally, the important factor for energy generation is identified by comparing the results.ope

A lunar space station

A concept for a space station to be placed in low lunar orbit in support of the eventual establishment of a permanent moon base is proposed. This space station would have several functions: (1) a complete support facility for the maintenance of the permanent moon base and its population; (2) an orbital docking area to facilitate the ferrying of materials and personnel to and from Earth; (3) a zero gravity factory using lunar raw materials to grow superior GaAs crystals for use in semiconductors and mass produce inexpensive fiber glass; and (4) a space garden for the benefit of the air food cycles. The mission scenario, design requirements, and technology needs and developments are included as part of the proposal

Experimental setup for light-to-heat NIR conversion measurements of gold nano-particles’ solutions

In recent years, there is a constantly increasing interest in the application of nanoparticles for cancer diagnosis and cancer therapy. In this respect, the most promising nano-objects at present are the gold nanoparticles. A very convenient and powerful property of these objects is their ability to increase their temperature under electro-magnetic irradiation with certain wavelength. In our research we have directed our efforts toward particular nano-objects specifically sensitive to electromagnetic radiation in the near-infrared region (NIR). In order to study the photothermic properties of the solutions of gold nanoparticles in the NIR we constructed a specific electronic setup consisting of a laser system with interchangeable laser diodes with different wavelength NIR light, a thermally-insulated cuvette-holder compartment with temperature measuring probes and a NIR spectrometer to control the stimulated fluorescence emission of the nanoparticles’ solutions. The temperature measurement compartment with the thermal-insulated cuvette holder was designed to maintain the solutions’ temperature at a fixed value right before the moment of laser irradiation. To maintain the measurement setup at a fixed temperature before the irradiation we used a thermal stabilized system based on two Peltier cells with electronic temperature control. The temperatures of the ambient air and the temperature of the cuvette walls were continuously measured in order to make corrections about the temperature dissipation during the irradiation

Magnetocapillary self-assemblies: locomotion and micromanipulation along a liquid interface

This paper presents an overview and discussion of magnetocapillary self-assemblies. New results are presented, in particular concerning the possible development of future applications. These self-organizing structures possess the notable ability to move along an interface when powered by an oscillatory, uniform magnetic field. The system is constructed as follows. Soft magnetic particles are placed on a liquid interface, and submitted to a magnetic induction field. An attractive force due to the curvature of the interface around the particles competes with an interaction between magnetic dipoles. Ordered structures can spontaneously emerge from these conditions. Furthermore, time-dependent magnetic fields can produce a wide range of dynamic behaviours, including non-time-reversible deformation sequences that produce translational motion at low Reynolds number. In other words, due to a spontaneous breaking of time-reversal symmetry, the assembly can turn into a surface microswimmer. Trajectories have been shown to be precisely controllable. As a consequence, this system offers a way to produce microrobots able to perform different tasks. This is illustrated in this paper by the capture, transport and release of a floating cargo, and the controlled mixing of fluids at low Reynolds number.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures review pape
