    Bridge the Gap Between VQA and Human Behavior on Omnidirectional Video: A Large-Scale Dataset and a Deep Learning Model

    Omnidirectional video enables spherical stimuli with the 360×180360 \times 180^ \circ viewing range. Meanwhile, only the viewport region of omnidirectional video can be seen by the observer through head movement (HM), and an even smaller region within the viewport can be clearly perceived through eye movement (EM). Thus, the subjective quality of omnidirectional video may be correlated with HM and EM of human behavior. To fill in the gap between subjective quality and human behavior, this paper proposes a large-scale visual quality assessment (VQA) dataset of omnidirectional video, called VQA-OV, which collects 60 reference sequences and 540 impaired sequences. Our VQA-OV dataset provides not only the subjective quality scores of sequences but also the HM and EM data of subjects. By mining our dataset, we find that the subjective quality of omnidirectional video is indeed related to HM and EM. Hence, we develop a deep learning model, which embeds HM and EM, for objective VQA on omnidirectional video.     Spherical Vision Transformer for 360-degree Video Saliency Prediction

    The growing interest in omnidirectional videos (ODVs) that capture the full field-of-view (FOV) has gained 360-degree saliency prediction importance in computer vision. However, predicting where humans look in 360-degree scenes presents unique challenges, including spherical distortion, high resolution, and limited labelled data. We propose a novel vision-transformer-based model for omnidirectional videos named SalViT360 that leverages tangent image representations. We introduce a spherical geometry-aware spatiotemporal self-attention mechanism that is capable of effective omnidirectional video understanding. Furthermore, we present a consistency-based unsupervised regularization term for projection-based 360-degree dense-prediction models to reduce artefacts in the predictions that occur after inverse projection. Our approach is the first to employ tangent images for omnidirectional saliency prediction, and our experimental results on three ODV saliency datasets demonstrate its effectiveness compared to the state-of-the-art.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, accepted to BMVC 202

    Visual Saliency Estimation Via HEVC Bitstream Analysis

    Abstract Since Information Technology developed dramatically from the last century 50's, digital images and video are ubiquitous. In the last decade, image and video processing have become more and more popular in biomedical, industrial, art and other fields. People made progress in the visual information such as images or video display, storage and transmission. The attendant problem is that video processing tasks in time domain become particularly arduous. Based on the study of the existing compressed domain video saliency detection model, a new saliency estimation model for video based on High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) is presented. First, the relative features are extracted from HEVC encoded bitstream. The naive Bayesian model is used to train and test features based on original YUV videos and ground truth. The intra frame saliency map can be achieved after training and testing intra features. And inter frame saliency can be achieved by intra saliency with moving motion vectors. The ROC of our proposed intra mode is 0.9561. Other classification methods such as support vector machine (SVM), k nearest neighbors (KNN) and the decision tree are presented to compare the experimental outcomes.     Improved salient object detection via boundary components affinity

    Referring to the existing model that considers the image boundary as the image background, the model is still not able to produce an optimum detection. This paper is introducing the combination features at the boundary known as boundary components affinity that is capable to produce an optimum measure on the image background. It consists of contrast, spatial location, force interaction and boundary ratio that contribute to a novel boundary connectivity measure. The integrated features are capable to produce clearer background with minimum unwanted foreground patches compared to the ground truth. The extracted boundary features are integrated as the boundary components affinity. These features were used for measuring the image background through its boundary connectivity to obtain the final salient object detection. Using the verified datasets, the performance of the proposed model was measured and compared with the 4 state-of-art models. In addition, the model performance was tested on the close contrast images. The detection performance was compared and analysed based on the precision, recall, true positive rate, false positive rate, F Measure and Mean Absolute Error (MAE). The model had successfully reduced the MAE by maximum of 9.4%

    A Dilated Inception Network for Visual Saliency Prediction

    Recently, with the advent of deep convolutional neural networks (DCNN), the improvements in visual saliency prediction research are impressive. One possible direction to approach the next improvement is to fully characterize the multi-scale saliency-influential factors with a computationally-friendly module in DCNN architectures. In this work, we proposed an end-to-end dilated inception network (DINet) for visual saliency prediction. It captures multi-scale contextual features effectively with very limited extra parameters. Instead of utilizing parallel standard convolutions with different kernel sizes as the existing inception module, our proposed dilated inception module (DIM) uses parallel dilated convolutions with different dilation rates which can significantly reduce the computation load while enriching the diversity of receptive fields in feature maps. Moreover, the performance of our saliency model is further improved by using a set of linear normalization-based probability distribution distance metrics as loss functions. As such, we can formulate saliency prediction as a probability distribution prediction task for global saliency inference instead of a typical pixel-wise regression problem. Experimental results on several challenging saliency benchmark datasets demonstrate that our DINet with proposed loss functions can achieve state-of-the-art performance with shorter inference time.Comment: Accepted by IEEE Transactions on Multimedia.
