Attribute-Graph: A Graph based approach to Image Ranking
We propose a novel image representation, termed Attribute-Graph, to rank
images by their semantic similarity to a given query image. An Attribute-Graph
is an undirected fully connected graph, incorporating both local and global
image characteristics. The graph nodes characterise objects as well as the
overall scene context using mid-level semantic attributes, while the edges
capture the object topology. We demonstrate the effectiveness of
Attribute-Graphs by applying them to the problem of image ranking. We benchmark
the performance of our algorithm on the 'rPascal' and 'rImageNet' datasets,
which we have created in order to evaluate the ranking performance on complex
queries containing multiple objects. Our experimental evaluation shows that
modelling images as Attribute-Graphs results in improved ranking performance
over existing techniques.Comment: In IEEE International Conference on Computer Vision (ICCV) 201
A Multiplicative Model for Learning Distributed Text-Based Attribute Representations
In this paper we propose a general framework for learning distributed
representations of attributes: characteristics of text whose representations
can be jointly learned with word embeddings. Attributes can correspond to
document indicators (to learn sentence vectors), language indicators (to learn
distributed language representations), meta-data and side information (such as
the age, gender and industry of a blogger) or representations of authors. We
describe a third-order model where word context and attribute vectors interact
multiplicatively to predict the next word in a sequence. This leads to the
notion of conditional word similarity: how meanings of words change when
conditioned on different attributes. We perform several experimental tasks
including sentiment classification, cross-lingual document classification, and
blog authorship attribution. We also qualitatively evaluate conditional word
neighbours and attribute-conditioned text generation.Comment: 11 pages. An earlier version was accepted to the ICML-2014 Workshop

Context-aware person identification in personal photo collections
Identifying the people in photos is an important need for users of photo management systems. We present MediAssist, one such system which facilitates browsing, searching and semi-automatic annotation of personal photos, using analysis of both image content and the context in which the photo is captured. This semi-automatic annotation includes annotation of the identity of people in photos. In this paper, we focus on such person annotation, and propose person identification techniques based on a combination of context and content. We propose language modelling and nearest neighbor approaches to context-based person identification, in addition to novel face color and image color content-based features (used alongside face recognition and body patch features). We conduct a comprehensive empirical study of these techniques using the real private photo collections of a number of users, and show that combining context- and content-based analysis improves performance over content or context alone
A Word Sense-Oriented User Interface for Interactive Multilingual Text Retrieval
In this paper we present an interface for supporting a user in an interactive cross-language search process using semantic classes. In order to enable users to access multilingual information, different problems have to be solved: disambiguating and translating the query words, as well as categorizing and presenting the results appropriately. Therefore, we first give a brief introduction to word sense disambiguation, cross-language text retrieval and document categorization and finally describe recent achievements of our research towards an interactive multilingual retrieval system. We focus especially on the problem of browsing and navigation of the different word senses in one source and possibly several target languages. In the last part of the paper, we discuss the developed user interface and its functionalities in more detail
