Apperceptive patterning: Artefaction, extensional beliefs and cognitive scaffolding
In âPsychopower and Ordinary Madnessâ my ambition, as it relates to Bernard Stieglerâs recent literature, was twofold: 1) critiquing Stieglerâs work on exosomatization and artefactual posthumanismâor, more specifically, nonhumanismâto problematize approaches to media archaeology that rely upon technical exteriorization; 2) challenging how Stiegler engages with Giuseppe Longo and Francis Baillyâs conception of negative entropy. These efforts were directed by a prevalent techno-cultural qualifier: the rise of Synthetic Intelligence (including neural nets, deep learning, predictive processing and Bayesian models of cognition). This paper continues this project but first directs a critical analytic lens at the Derridean practice of the ontologization of grammatization from which Stiegler emerges while also distinguishing how metalanguages operate in relation to object-oriented environmental interaction by way of inferentialism. Stalking continental (Kapp, Simondon, Leroi-Gourhan, etc.) and analytic traditions (e.g., Carnap, Chalmers, Clark, Sutton, Novaes, etc.), we move from artefacts to AI and Predictive Processing so as to link theories related to technicity with philosophy of mind. Simultaneously drawing forth Robert Brandomâs conceptualization of the roles that commitments play in retrospectively reconstructing the social experiences that lead to our endorsement(s) of norms, we compliment this account with Reza Negarestaniâs deprivatized account of intelligence while analyzing the equipollent role between language and media (both digital and analog)
Behavior change interventions: the potential of ontologies for advancing science and practice
A central goal of behavioral medicine is the creation of evidence-based interventions for promoting behavior change. Scientific knowledge about behavior change could be more effectively accumulated using "ontologies." In information science, an ontology is a systematic method for articulating a "controlled vocabulary" of agreed-upon terms and their inter-relationships. It involves three core elements: (1) a controlled vocabulary specifying and defining existing classes; (2) specification of the inter-relationships between classes; and (3) codification in a computer-readable format to enable knowledge generation, organization, reuse, integration, and analysis. This paper introduces ontologies, provides a review of current efforts to create ontologies related to behavior change interventions and suggests future work. This paper was written by behavioral medicine and information science experts and was developed in partnership between the Society of Behavioral Medicine's Technology Special Interest Group (SIG) and the Theories and Techniques of Behavior Change Interventions SIG. In recent years significant progress has been made in the foundational work needed to develop ontologies of behavior change. Ontologies of behavior change could facilitate a transformation of behavioral science from a field in which data from different experiments are siloed into one in which data across experiments could be compared and/or integrated. This could facilitate new approaches to hypothesis generation and knowledge discovery in behavioral science
Guess who? Multilingual approach for the automated generation of author-stylized poetry
This paper addresses the problem of stylized text generation in a
multilingual setup. A version of a language model based on a long short-term
memory (LSTM) artificial neural network with extended phonetic and semantic
embeddings is used for stylized poetry generation. The quality of the resulting
poems generated by the network is estimated through bilingual evaluation
understudy (BLEU), a survey and a new cross-entropy based metric that is
suggested for the problems of such type. The experiments show that the proposed
model consistently outperforms random sample and vanilla-LSTM baselines, humans
also tend to associate machine generated texts with the target author
Cultural consequences of computing technology
Computing technology is clearly a technical revolution, but will most probably bring about a cultural revolution\ud
as well. The effects of this technology on human culture will be dramatic and far-reaching. Yet, computers and\ud
electronic networks are but the latest development in a long history of cognitive tools, such as writing and printing.\ud
We will examine this history, which exhibits long-term trends toward an increasing democratization of culture,\ud
before turning to today's technology. Within this framework, we will analyze the probable effects of computing on\ud
culture: dynamical representations, generalized networking, constant modification and reproduction. To address the\ud
problems posed by this new technical environment, we will suggest possible remedies. In particular, the role of\ud
social institutions will be discussed, and we will outline the shape of new electronic institutions able to deal with the\ud
information flow on the internet
