    Determination of timed transitions in identified discrete-event models for fault detection

    International audienceModel-based fault detection compares modeled and observed behavior to decide whether a system operates properly or not. The key issue in this paper is to model large-cale Discrete Event Systems (DESs) with little a-priori knowledge. For this class of systems a new approach to black-box determination of timed transitions for timed automata is proposed. The method identifies a set of time guards leading to an advantageous trade-off between the fault detection errors: false alarms and missed detections. A real industrial system is applied for evaluation of time guard determination. It is shown that applying the proposed method results in a better trade-off between the fault detection errors than using common methods (e.g. Min/Max, Normal Distribution)

    DevOps for Trustworthy Smart IoT Systems

    ENACT is a research project funded by the European Commission under its H2020 program. The project consortium consists of twelve industry and research member organisations spread across the whole EU. The overall goal of the ENACT project was to provide a novel set of solutions to enable DevOps in the realm of trustworthy Smart IoT Systems. Smart IoT Systems (SIS) are complex systems involving not only sensors but also actuators with control loops distributed all across the IoT, Edge and Cloud infrastructure. Since smart IoT systems typically operate in a changing and often unpredictable environment, the ability of these systems to continuously evolve and adapt to their new environment is decisive to ensure and increase their trustworthiness, quality and user experience. DevOps has established itself as a software development life-cycle model that encourages developers to continuously bring new features to the system under operation without sacrificing quality. This book reports on the ENACT work to empower the development and operation as well as the continuous and agile evolution of SIS, which is necessary to adapt the system to changes in its environment, such as newly appearing trustworthiness threats

    Autonomous Aerial Water Sampling

    Obtaining spatially separated, high frequency water samples from rivers and lakes is critical to enhance our understanding and effective management of fresh water resources. In this thesis we present an aerial water sampler and verify the system in field experiments. The aerial water sampler has the potential to vastly increase the speed and range at which scientists obtain water samples while reducing cost and effort. The water sampling system includes: 1) a mechanism to capture three 20 ml samples per mission; 2) sensors and algorithms for safe navigation and altitude approximation over water; and 3) software components that integrate and analyze sensor data, control the vehicle, and drive the sampling mechanism. In this thesis we validate the system in the lab, characterize key sensors, and present results of outdoor experiments. We compare water samples from local lakes obtained by our system to samples obtained by traditional sampling techniques. We find that nearly all water properties are consistent between the two techniques. These experiments show that despite the challenges associated with flying precisely over water, it is possible to quickly obtain water samples with an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV).
