Experimental effects and causal representations
In experimental settings, scientists often âmakeâ new things, in which case the aim is to intervene in order to produce experimental objects and processesâcharacterized as âeffectsâ. In this discussion, I illuminate an important performative function in measurement and experimentation in general: intervention-based experimental production (IEP). I argue that even though the goal of IEP is the production of new effects, it can be informative for causal details in scientific representations. Specifically, IEP can be informative about causal relations in: regularities under study; âintervention systemsâ, which are measurement/experimental systems; and new technological systems
Information Processing, Computation and Cognition
Computation and information processing are among the most fundamental notions in cognitive science. They are also among the most imprecisely discussed. Many cognitive scientists take it for granted that cognition involves computation, information processing, or both â although others disagree vehemently. Yet different cognitive scientists use âcomputationâ and âinformation processingâ to mean different things, sometimes without realizing that they do. In addition, computation and information processing are surrounded by several myths; first and foremost, that they are the same thing. In this paper, we address this unsatisfactory state of affairs by presenting a general and theory-neutral account of computation and information processing. We also apply our framework by analyzing the relations between computation and information processing on one hand and classicism and connectionism/computational neuroscience on the other. We defend the relevance to cognitive science of both computation, at least in a generic sense, and information processing, in three important senses of the term. Our account advances several foundational debates in cognitive science by untangling some of their conceptual knots in a theory-neutral way. By leveling the playing field, we pave the way for the future resolution of the debatesâ empirical aspects
Bounded Rationality and Heuristics in Humans and in Artificial Cognitive Systems
In this paper I will present an analysis of the impact that the notion of âbounded rationalityâ,
introduced by Herbert Simon in his book âAdministrative Behaviorâ, produced in the
field of Artificial Intelligence (AI). In particular, by focusing on the field of Automated
Decision Making (ADM), I will show how the introduction of the cognitive dimension into
the study of choice of a rational (natural) agent, indirectly determined - in the AI field - the
development of a line of research aiming at the realisation of artificial systems whose decisions
are based on the adoption of powerful shortcut strategies (known as heuristics) based
on âsatisficingâ - i.e. non optimal - solutions to problem solving. I will show how the
âheuristic approachâ to problem solving allowed, in AI, to face problems of combinatorial
complexity in real-life situations and still represents an important strategy for the design
and implementation of intelligent systems
Inclusive Educational Review of Software Architectural Styles and Patterns for the Students of the College of Information and Computing Sciences of Cagayan State University
A good architectural design has a high contribution to the success of a system. In addition, this
architectural design is useful for the Information Technology (IT) students as their basis of their
software development of their capstone project. The utilization of inappropriate architecture can lead
to disastrous consequences for IT student researchers. A detailed understanding of software
architecture styles is very useful to analyze distributed and complex systems which is the trend of
capstone projects. This paper explores the quality attributes of three architecture styles namely
shared-nothing, broker, and representational state transfer, which are perceived as beneficial to
distributed system architecture that serve as guide to student researchers. This is to provide a picture
of the said three key software architecture styles which could be helpful not only for student
researchers but also for the software developers by adding references to minimize the uncertainty
while selecting the appropriate architectural style for their specific needs. An architectural style must
be chosen correctly to obtain all its benefits in the system. In this paper, the three architectural styles
are compared on the foundation of various quality attributes derived from ISO 9126-1 standard such
as functionality, reliability, usability, efficiency, maintainability, and portability. The results of the
study are useful to guide the student researchers in their capstone project and to reduce the number
of unsuccessful attempts of software development component of their capstone project
Measurement with Persons: A European Network
The European âMeasuring the Impossibleâ Network MINET promotes new research activities in measurement dependent on human perception and/or interpretation. This includes the perceived attributes of products and services, such as quality or desirability, and societal parameters such as security and well-being. Work has aimed at consensus about four âgenericâ metrological issues: (1) Measurement Concepts & Terminology; (2) Measurement Techniques: (3) Measurement Uncertainty; and (4) Decision-making & Impact Assessment, and how these can be applied specificallyto the âMeasurement of Personsâ in terms of âMan as a Measurement Instrumentâ and âMeasuring Man.â Some of the main achievements of MINET include a research repository with glossary; training course; book; series of workshops;think tanks and study visits, which have brought together a unique constellation of researchers from physics, metrology,physiology, psychophysics, psychology and sociology. Metrology (quality-assured measurement) in this area is relativelyunderdeveloped, despite great potential for innovation, and extends beyond traditional physiological metrology in thatit also deals with measurement with all human senses as well as mental and behavioral processes. This is particularlyrelevant in applications where humans are an important component of critical systems, where for instance health andsafety are at stake
Designing as Construction of Representations: A Dynamic Viewpoint in Cognitive Design Research
This article presents a cognitively oriented viewpoint on design. It focuses
on cognitive, dynamic aspects of real design, i.e., the actual cognitive
activity implemented by designers during their work on professional design
projects. Rather than conceiving de-signing as problem solving - Simon's
symbolic information processing (SIP) approach - or as a reflective practice or
some other form of situated activity - the situativity (SIT) approach - we
consider that, from a cognitive viewpoint, designing is most appropriately
characterised as a construction of representations. After a critical discussion
of the SIP and SIT approaches to design, we present our view-point. This
presentation concerns the evolving nature of representations regarding levels
of abstraction and degrees of precision, the function of external
representations, and specific qualities of representation in collective design.
Designing is described at three levels: the organisation of the activity, its
strategies, and its design-representation construction activities (different
ways to generate, trans-form, and evaluate representations). Even if we adopt a
"generic design" stance, we claim that design can take different forms
depending on the nature of the artefact, and we propose some candidates for
dimensions that allow a distinction to be made between these forms of design.
We discuss the potential specificity of HCI design, and the lack of cognitive
design research occupied with the quality of design. We close our discussion of
representational structures and activities by an outline of some directions
regarding their functional linkages
