Characteristics of the National Applicant Pool for Clinical Informatics Fellowships (2016-2017)

We conducted a national study to assess the numbers and diversity of applicants for 2016 and 2017 clinical informatics fellowship positions. In each year, we collected data on the number of applications that programs received from candidates who were ultimately successful vs. unsuccessful. In 2017, we also conducted an anonymous applicant survey. Successful candidates applied to an average of 4.2 and 5.5 programs for 2016 and 2017, respectively. In the survey, unsuccessful candidates reported applying to fewer programs. Assuming unsuccessful candidates submitted between 2-5 applications each, the total applicant pool numbered 42-69 for 2016 (competing for 24 positions) and 52-85 for 2017 (competing for 30 positions). Among survey respondents (n=33), 24% were female, 1 was black and none were Hispanic. We conclude that greater efforts are needed to enhance interest in clinical informatics among medical students and residents, particularly among women and members of underrepresented minority groups

Investing in People

Foundations have long created programs to provide grants to individuals—most often in the form of fellowships, scholarships, and prizes. Several of these programs have become so prominent that they are now institutions in and of themselves. Consider just a few examples: the Pulitzer Prize, Fulbright Program, and MacArthur "genius" awards. Governments, as well as foundations large and small, fund individual support programs.The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has generously allowed the authors of this report to examine its portfolio of individual support programs to explore what the authors believe are some of the strategic fundamentals underlying this type of programming that could be applied to future individual support grantmaking. The purpose of this study is to inform those interested in individual support programs about not only some of the strategy considerations underlying this type of grantmaking but what these programs can be expected to achieve—and under what circumstances.

A Qualitative Inquiry Examining The Lived Experiences Of African American Male Doctors

Despite the increased attention to diversity by the academic medicine community, African American men are still underrepresented in medicine. It is still being determined how or to what extent the projected physician shortage can be addressed by increasing African American men in medicine. This study explored the lived experience of African American male doctors who successfully matriculated and graduated from U.S. medical schools. The findings may provide valuable insight into how the lived experience of existing African American male doctors can be leveraged to increase African American men within medical pathways. The following research questions were constructed to guide the study: (1) What are the lived experiences of African American male physicians? (2) How do the academic medicine system factors influence an African American male\u27s trajectory into medicine? This study followed a thematic analysis to explore the lived experiences of African American male physicians.
