A genetic algorithm-assisted semi-adaptive MMSE multi-user detection for MC-CDMA mobile communication systems
In this work, a novel Minimum-Mean Squared-Error (MMSE) multi-user detector is proposed for MC-CDMA transmission systems working over mobile radio channels characterized by time-varying multipath fading. The proposed MUD algorithm is based on a Genetic Algorithm (GA)-assisted per-carrier MMSE criterion. The GA block works in two successive steps: a training-aided step aimed at computing the optimal receiver weights using a very short training sequence, and a decision-directed step aimed at dynamically updating the weights vector during a channel coherence period. Numerical results evidenced BER performances almost coincident with ones yielded by ideal MMSE-MUD based on the perfect knowledge of channel impulse response. The proposed GA-assisted MMSE-MUD clearly outperforms state-of-the-art adaptive MMSE receivers based on deterministic gradient algorithms, especially for high number of transmitting users
Code-timing synchronization in DS-CDMA systems using space-time diversity
The synchronization of a desired user transmitting a known training sequence in a direct-sequence (DS) asynchronous code-division multiple-access (CDMA) sys-tem is addressed. It is assumed that the receiver consists of an arbitrary antenna array and works in a near-far, frequency-nonselective, slowly fading channel. The estimator that we propose is derived by applying the maximum likelihood (ML) principle to a signal model in which the contribution of all the interfering compo-nents (e.g., multiple-access interference, external interference and noise) is modeled as a Gaussian term with an unknown and arbitrary space-time correlation matrix. The main contribution of this paper is the fact that the estimator makes eÆcient use of the structure of the signals in both the space and time domains. Its perfor-mance is compared with the Cramer-Rao Bound, and with the performance of other methods proposed recently that also employ an antenna array but only exploit the structure of the signals in one of the two domains, while using the other simply as a means of path diversity. It is shown that the use of the temporal and spatial structures is necessary to achieve synchronization in heavily loaded systems or in the presence of directional external interference.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
Uplink Linear Receivers for Multi-cell Multiuser MIMO with Pilot Contamination: Large System Analysis
Base stations with a large number of transmit antennas have the potential to
serve a large number of users at high rates. However, the receiver processing
in the uplink relies on channel estimates which are known to suffer from pilot
interference. In this work, making use of the similarity of the uplink received
signal in CDMA with that of a multi-cell multi-antenna system, we perform a
large system analysis when the receiver employs an MMSE filter with a pilot
contaminated estimate. We assume a Rayleigh fading channel with different
received powers from users. We find the asymptotic Signal to Interference plus
Noise Ratio (SINR) as the number of antennas and number of users per base
station grow large while maintaining a fixed ratio. Through the SINR expression
we explore the scenario where the number of users being served are comparable
to the number of antennas at the base station. The SINR explicitly captures the
effect of pilot contamination and is found to be the same as that employing a
matched filter with a pilot contaminated estimate. We also find the exact
expression for the interference suppression obtained using an MMSE filter which
is an important factor when there are significant number of users in the system
as compared to the number of antennas. In a typical set up, in terms of the
five percentile SINR, the MMSE filter is shown to provide significant gains
over matched filtering and is within 5 dB of MMSE filter with perfect channel
estimate. Simulation results for achievable rates are close to large system
limits for even a 10-antenna base station with 3 or more users per cell.Comment: Accepted for publication in IEEE Transactions on Wireless

Adaptive interference suppression for DS-CDMA systems based on interpolated FIR filters with adaptive interpolators in multipath channels
In this work we propose an adaptive linear receiver structure based on interpolated finite impulse response (FIR) filters with adaptive interpolators for direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) systems in multipath channels. The interpolated minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) and the interpolated constrained minimum variance (CMV) solutions are described for a novel scheme where the interpolator is rendered time-varying in order to mitigate multiple access interference (MAI) and multiple-path propagation effects. Based upon the interpolated MMSE and CMV solutions we present computationally efficient stochastic gradient (SG) and exponentially weighted recursive least squares type (RLS) algorithms for both receiver and interpolator filters in the supervised and blind modes of operation. A convergence analysis of the algorithms and a discussion of the convergence properties of the method are carried out for both modes of operation. Simulation experiments for a downlink scenario show that the proposed structures achieve a superior BER convergence and steady-state performance to previously reported reduced-rank receivers at lower complexity
Coded DS-CDMA Systems with Iterative Channel Estimation and no Pilot Symbols
In this paper, we describe direct-sequence code-division multiple-access
(DS-CDMA) systems with quadriphase-shift keying in which channel estimation,
coherent demodulation, and decoding are iteratively performed without the use
of any training or pilot symbols. An expectation-maximization
channel-estimation algorithm for the fading amplitude, phase, and the
interference power spectral density (PSD) due to the combined interference and
thermal noise is proposed for DS-CDMA systems with irregular repeat-accumulate
codes. After initial estimates of the fading amplitude, phase, and interference
PSD are obtained from the received symbols, subsequent values of these
parameters are iteratively updated by using the soft feedback from the channel
decoder. The updated estimates are combined with the received symbols and
iteratively passed to the decoder. The elimination of pilot symbols simplifies
the system design and allows either an enhanced information throughput, an
improved bit error rate, or greater spectral efficiency. The interference-PSD
estimation enables DS-CDMA systems to significantly suppress interference.Comment: To appear, IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communication
Performance Analysis of Iterative Channel Estimation and Multiuser Detection in Multipath DS-CDMA Channels
This paper examines the performance of decision feedback based iterative
channel estimation and multiuser detection in channel coded aperiodic DS-CDMA
systems operating over multipath fading channels. First, explicit expressions
describing the performance of channel estimation and parallel interference
cancellation based multiuser detection are developed. These results are then
combined to characterize the evolution of the performance of a system that
iterates among channel estimation, multiuser detection and channel decoding.
Sufficient conditions for convergence of this system to a unique fixed point
are developed.Comment: To appear in the IEEE Transactions on Signal Processin
