    4-H STEM Curriculum Challenges: A Delphi study

    Science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) skills have become essential for today’s youth. STEM-literate individuals are a necessity to fill the ever-growing STEM employment pipeline. Employers are expecting applicants with STEM skills. 4-H programs across the nation have recognized the importance of educating STEM-minded youth. As STEM programs become more prevalent within 4-H, it is essential to address challenges Extension educators and 4-H volunteers face when teaching STEM curriculum. In this study the Delphi technique was utilized to collect the opinions of a geographically dispersed group of 4-H Extension educators and volunteers. Each group served on a separate panel and were asked the question, “What challenges do you face when teaching STEM curriculum?” After three rounds of study, both the educator and volunteer panels identified 2 challenges faced when teaching STEM curriculum. Through identification of these challenges, Oklahoma state 4-H staff can better address the professional development needs of educators and volunteers within the organization, and support the desired scientific literacy outcomes of 4-H youth

    PERCEIVED CHALLENGES OF ICT AS AN EXAMINABLE CURRICULUM SUBJECT IN RURAL SECONDARY SCHOOLS: VOICES OF TEACHERS AND LEARNERS IN SOUTHERN ZAMBIA

    The study interrogated teachers’ and pupils’ perceptions of Information Communication Technology (ICT) as an examinable curriculum subject in secondary schools of Mazabuka district in Southern Zambia. In 2013 Ministry of Education (MoE) reviewed the National School Curriculum introducing ICT as an examinable subject at the junior secondary school level. This development was, however, received with mixed feelings among different stakeholders across the nation. The study employed Davis’ (1989) Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) as a theoretical framework to establish the teachers’ and pupils’ perceptions of ICT as an examinable curriculum subject. A descriptive research design was used to collect qualitative data from a sample size of 36 participants which included school administrators, ICT teachers, and pupils. Purposive and quota sampling was applied to select the participants. Data were collected using unstructured questionnaires, interviews, and focus group discussions. The data were analysed thematically by categorization of major and sub-themes that emerged from the study. The study showed that both teachers and pupils had positive perceptions towards ICT as an examinable curriculum subject. The majority of the participants strongly felt that the current times demanded for ICT knowledge in order for learners to fit well in the world of technology. The study also identified challenges faced in the teaching and learning of ICT such as; a lack of trained teachers, inadequate computer hardware and software, and irregular power supply. Various measures were employed in mitigating the challenges such as community engagement, voluntary teaching, class splitting, use of alternative sources of power, and explorations of online resources. The study recommended that the Ministry of Education should revert to its earlier policy position where all schools were to offer ICT as a compulsory examinable subject at the junior secondary school level. The government also should consider the reduction of taxes and tariffs on end-user consumer ICT products such as desktops computers, iPads, projectors, and others.  Article visualizations

    The EDINSOST project: improving sustainability education in spanish higher education

    The EDINSOST R+D+i “Society Challenges” Project, funded by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness and the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities under the research challenge in the field of social change and innovation, aims to contribute to the improvement of social challenges across the (1) Spanish Strategy for Science, Technology and Innovation, (2) the State Plan of Scientific and Technical Research and Innovation, and (3) the European 2020 Strategy. The research is both highly multidisciplinary and contextualized and is applied in Ten Spanish Universities working together in the “Curriculum sustainability" group of the CRUE Sectorial Commission of Sustainability. The goal of this group is to create synergies and action frameworks agreed at a national level. This is an area of research action whose lack of common criteria for integrating sustainability competencies, learning processes and assessment hinders their achievement. To meet this challenge, frameworks and processes have been designed to facilitate the integration of sustainability into the university curriculum holistically through mapping and validation of pedagogical practices and the diagnosis of the state of Spanish universities, for which building materials for teaching and learning sustainability competencies have been developed. The project objectives and results are focused on: 1) Defining the map of sustainability competencies of the university degrees involved in the project, and establishing the framework to facilitate their integration in a holistic manner; 2) validating teaching strategies for the acquisition of sustainability competencies from a constructivist and community-oriented pedagogical approach; 3) diagnosing the state of faculty sustainability training needs and developing and pilot training proposals; and 4) diagnosing the state of learning of sustainability competencies in university students as well as preparing and piloting training proposals. The research methodology has an interpretive focus and uses quantitative and qualitative techniques to cover a population with three impact levels. Firstly, Bachelor and Master Degrees that integrate the three pillars of sustainability (environmental, social and economic). Secondly, and taking into account their long-term multiplier effect, special emphasis is made on five Bachelor and Master degrees in Education, since these graduates are the future teachers of the next generation of citizens.     School improvement through digital technologies:Using managed service/support in schools in Northern Ireland with case studies of success

    Schools in Northern Ireland, like those in any country, face educational challenges, whilst they are, at the same time, supported with a range of resource provision. Facing and addressing educational challenges enables schools to improve, in a range of possible and different ways: at an individual pupil level; at a single class level; for pupils across the school; with teachers across the schools; or for parents across the school. Some of the resource provision that is available to schools in Northern Ireland consists of the centrally-provided digital technology managed services and support from C2k and Capita. These services provide fundamental connectivity and networking within and across schools, hardware that can be added to and integrated with a school’s own devices, a communication platform (Office 365, Google, or Fronter), and a wide range of selected software curriculum resources. This latter digital technology provision offers a very wide range of tools that teachers can select to use in specific teaching and learning circumstances. Whilst the affordances offered from selected networking connectivity, hardware, a communication platform and software curriculum resources can be utilised to support specific subject or topic tasks, they can also be selected to explore and address educational challenges and consequently to support school improvement leading to better outcomes for the learner. The process and examples that some schools have taken in this respect – selecting digital resources to address educational challenges to lead to school improvement – are the focus of this document

    Discipline-based educational development: examples from four Canadian universities

    Discipline-based educational development , integrating the principles of teaching and learning with specific content knowledge of a discipline, is emerging as a complement to more traditional, centralized models of teaching support, bringing with it its own advantages and challenges. Partly, it is a question of belonging: it helps to be part of a team of people - possibly with a variety of specialties in areas like curriculum, pedagogy, educational technology - and operating from a centre offers this important support, but coming from a single unit across campus may make it harder to connect with those teaching in departments. Conversely, working in a department creates many opportunities to connect with faculty and students, but can be isolating as there is unlikely to be a team of any size at the department level doing similar work. This panel discussion will explore four examples of discipline-based educational development at Canadian universities, highlighting successful initiatives and challenges faced by educators in implementing this approach. In one case, teaching is transforming via graduate student projects within specific courses, and the others have variations on teaching centre models with different levels of connections to departments - in one case with staff members embedded in departments. We will also be interested to learn of other models from those who attend the discussion. Overall, this panel discussion aims to raise awareness of the value of discipline-based education development in STEM education and to provide a platform for dialogue and collaboration among educators and educational developers in Canadian post-secondary institutions

    Co-teaching a Grand Challenge Course: Using Digital Media and Collaborative Teaching Strategies for Effective Online Learning and Transliteracy Skills

    The presentation illustrates the partnership between an education librarian, a School of Education faculty member, and a graduate student in the School of Library and Information Science, and their use of multiple media platforms for teaching a web-enhanced Grand Challenge course about social justice issues in education. As a first-year course, Grand Challenge is designed for students to discuss and find creative solutions to global issues while addressing general education learning outcomes such as examining human differences and developing effective writing and information literacy skills. The presentation provides an example of an innovative teaching partnership based on the backward design of instruction method and experiments with the use of the Digital Information Fluency (DIF) model for teaching transliteracy. In addition, the presentation addresses the use of Writing Across the Curriculum principles, including the use of peer review and assistive technologies such as Inspiration to address writing challenges. Best practices for the use of digital technology, to include Sakai features such as Forums, Blogger, Glossary, and the Discussion Board for collaborative teaching and learning, and ScreenR for tutorial creation are discussed. The conclusion of the presentation provides a description of assessment and evaluation tools that were used and data analysis of student learning outcomes that will inform future teaching and collaboration
