Distributed simulation and the grid: Position statements
The Grid provides a new and unrivaled technology for large scale distributed simulation as it enables collaboration and the use of distributed computing resources. This panel paper presents the views of four researchers in the area of Distributed Simulation and the Grid. Together we try to identify the main research issues involved in applying Grid technology to distributed simulation and the key future challenges that need to be solved to achieve this goal. Such challenges include not only technical challenges, but also political ones such as management methodology for the Grid and the development of standards. The benefits of the Grid to end-user simulation modelers also are discussed
Agile and Pro-Active Public Administration as a Collaborative Networked Organization
In highly competitive, globalized economies and societies of always-on-line
people intensively using the Internet and mobile phones, public administrations
have to adapt to new challenges. Enterprises and citizens expect public
administrations to be agile and pro-active to foster development. A way to
achieve agility and pro-activity is application of a model of Collaborative
Network Organizations in its two forms: Virtual Organizations (VO) and Virtual
Organization Breeding Environments (VOBE). In the paper, advantages are shown
of public administration playing a role of a Virtual Organization customer on
the one hand, and a Virtual Organization member on the other hand. It is also
shown how public administration playing a role of a Virtual Organization
Breeding Environment may improve its agility and promote advanced technologies
and management methods among local organizations. It is argued in the paper
that public administration should provide a Virtual Organization Breeding

Panel on future challenges in modeling methodology
This panel paper presents the views of six researchers and practitioners of simulation modeling. Collectively we attempt to address a range of key future challenges to modeling methodology. It is hoped that the views of this paper, and the presentations made by the panelists at the 2004 Winter Simulation Conference will raise awareness and stimulate further discussion on the future of modeling methodology in areas such as modeling problems in business applications, human factors and geographically dispersed networks; rapid model development and maintenance; legacy modeling approaches; markup languages; virtual interactive process design and simulation; standards; and Grid computing
Caching-Aided Collaborative D2D Operation for Predictive Data Dissemination in Industrial IoT
Industrial automation deployments constitute challenging environments where
moving IoT machines may produce high-definition video and other heavy sensor
data during surveying and inspection operations. Transporting massive contents
to the edge network infrastructure and then eventually to the remote human
operator requires reliable and high-rate radio links supported by intelligent
data caching and delivery mechanisms. In this work, we address the challenges
of contents dissemination in characteristic factory automation scenarios by
proposing to engage moving industrial machines as device-to-device (D2D)
caching helpers. With the goal to improve reliability of high-rate
millimeter-wave (mmWave) data connections, we introduce the alternative
contents dissemination modes and then construct a novel mobility-aware
methodology that helps develop predictive mode selection strategies based on
the anticipated radio link conditions. We also conduct a thorough system-level
evaluation of representative data dissemination strategies to confirm the
benefits of predictive solutions that employ D2D-enabled collaborative caching
at the wireless edge to lower contents delivery latency and improve data
acquisition reliability
Summary of the First Workshop on Sustainable Software for Science: Practice and Experiences (WSSSPE1)
Challenges related to development, deployment, and maintenance of reusable software for science are becoming a growing concern. Many scientistsâ research increasingly depends on the quality and availability of software upon which their works are built. To highlight some of these issues and share experiences, the First Workshop on Sustainable Software for Science: Practice and Experiences (WSSSPE1) was held in November 2013 in conjunction with the SC13 Conference. The workshop featured keynote presentations and a large number (54) of solicited extended abstracts that were grouped into three themes and presented via panels. A set of collaborative notes of the presentations and discussion was taken during the workshop.
Unique perspectives were captured about issues such as comprehensive documentation, development and deployment practices, software licenses and career paths for developers. Attribution systems that account for evidence of software contribution and impact were also discussed. These include mechanisms such as Digital Object Identifiers, publication of âsoftware papersâ, and the use of online systems, for example source code repositories like GitHub. This paper summarizes the issues and shared experiences that were discussed, including cross-cutting issues and use cases. It joins a nascent literature seeking to understand what drives software work in science, and how it is impacted by the reward systems of science. These incentives can determine the extent to which developers are motivated to build software for the long-term, for the use of others, and whether to work collaboratively or separately. It also explores community building, leadership, and dynamics in relation to successful scientific software
The added value of implementing the Planet Game scenario with Collage and Gridcole
This paper discusses the suitability and the added value of Collage and Gridcole when contrasted with other solutions participating in the ICALT 2006 workshop titled âComparing educational modelling languages on a case study.â In this workshop each proposed solution was challenged to implement a Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning situation (CSCL) posed by the workshopâs organizers. Collage is a pattern-based authoring tool for the creation of CSCL scripts compliant with IMS Learning Design (IMS LD). These IMS LD scripts can be enacted by the Gridcole tailorable CSCL system. The analysis presented in the paper is organized as a case study which considers the data recorded in the workshop discussion as well the information reported in the workshop contributions. The results of this analysis show how Collage and Gridcole succeed in implementing the scenario and also point out some significant advantages in terms of design reusability and generality, user-friendliness, and enactment flexibility
Open semantic service networks
Online service marketplaces will soon be part of the economy to scale the provision of specialized multi-party services through automation and standardization. Current research, such as the *-USDL service description language family, is already deïŹning the basic building blocks to model the next generation of business services. Nonetheless, the developments being made do not target to interconnect services via service relationships. Without the concept of relationship, marketplaces will be seen as mere functional silos containing service descriptions. Yet, in real economies, all services are related and connected. Therefore, to address this gap we introduce the concept of open semantic service network (OSSN), concerned with the establishment of rich relationships between services. These networks will provide valuable knowledge on the global service economy, which can be exploited for many socio-economic and scientiïŹc purposes such as service network analysis, management, and control
