Separation-Sensitive Collision Detection for Convex Objects

We develop a class of new kinetic data structures for collision detection between moving convex polytopes; the performance of these structures is sensitive to the separation of the polytopes during their motion. For two convex polygons in the plane, let DD be the maximum diameter of the polygons, and let ss be the minimum distance between them during their motion. Our separation certificate changes O(log⁥(D/s))O(\log(D/s)) times when the relative motion of the two polygons is a translation along a straight line or convex curve, O(D/s)O(\sqrt{D/s}) for translation along an algebraic trajectory, and O(D/s)O(D/s) for algebraic rigid motion (translation and rotation). Each certificate update is performed in O(log⁥(D/s))O(\log(D/s)) time. Variants of these data structures are also shown that exhibit \emph{hysteresis}---after a separation certificate fails, the new certificate cannot fail again until the objects have moved by some constant fraction of their current separation. We can then bound the number of events by the combinatorial size of a certain cover of the motion path by balls.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures; to appear in Proc. 10th Annual ACM-SIAM Symposium on Discrete Algorithms, 1999; see also http://www.uiuc.edu/ph/www/jeffe/pubs/kollide.html ; v2 replaces submission with camera-ready versio

Blind Admission? The ability of NSC maths to signal competence in university commerce courses as compared to the former SC Higher Grade maths

    Get PDF
Mathematics is an important signal used for admission into commerce courses in South African universities. In 2008 the new National Senior Certificate replaced the former Senior Certificate. This new exam no longer had different grades and thus created a structural break in the ability of the mathematics mark to signal preparedness for university. Although the Department of Education provided a “translation” key between the two Certificates, the University of the Witwatersrand (and other universities) admitted many more students in 2009 that met the entry requirements than previously. However, this cohort has lower average test and exam scores than previous years. This suggests that marks obtained for mathematics in the new National Senior Certificate are inflated when compared to the former Senior Certificate. This paper uses similar tests, for two commerce subjects, written by students in 2008 and 2009 to create a comparison between the mathematics marks under the two different certificates. The results suggest that marks in the range of 40-100% for Higher Grade mathematics for the Senior Certificate are now compressed into the 70-95% range for the new National Senior Certificate. This significantly weakens the ability of the school-leaving mathematics mark to signal the ability of students to cope with first year commerce courses.Mathematics, National Senior Certificate, Economics 1, first year, Commerce courses, South Africa

La traduction dans la formation des Ă©tudiants au CollĂšge de Saint-Boniface : hier, aujourd’hui et demain

    Get PDF
Translation was part of the curriculum in the earlier years of the College, although it was seen in intellectual circles as a strategy for teaching other dominant languages, namely Greek and Latin. It thus remained an ancillary discipline for a very long time. The disappearance of the Classical Curriculum cleared the way for Translation to gain autonomy and expand as a discipline with the founding of the School of Translation in 1983, offering a Bachelor’s degree and a Certificate program in translation. Some years later, the entire Translation Certificate curriculum was made available on line. The CUSB Translation School thus became the first translation school in the world to offer a complete distance-learning program via the Internet. Students enrolled in the program log on from Winnipeg, rural Manitoba, other provinces across Canada and even other countries around the world. With this openness to the world, the college can look forward to a bright future for its translation program. Translation has also played an important role in Francophone identity building in Manitoba. Openness to others and to other fields of endeavour characterizes both translation as a field and translators as people

    Authorised Translations of Electronic Documents

A concept is proposed to extend authorised translations of documents to electronically signed, digital documents. Central element of the solution is an electronic seal, embodied as an XML data structure, which attests to the correctness of the translation and the authorisation of the translator. The seal contains a digital signature binding together original and translated document, thus enabling forensic inspection and therefore legal security in the appropriation of the translation. Organisational aspects of possible implementation variants of electronic authorised translations are discussed and a realisation as a stand-alone web-service is presented.Comment: In: Peer-reviewed Proceedings of the Information Security South Africa (ISSA) 2006 From Insight to Foresight Conference, 5 to 7 July 2006, Sandton, South Afric

Towards the Integration of an Intuitionistic First-Order Prover into Coq

An efficient intuitionistic first-order prover integrated into Coq is useful to replay proofs found by external automated theorem provers. We propose a two-phase approach: An intuitionistic prover generates a certificate based on the matrix characterization of intuitionistic first-order logic; the certificate is then translated into a sequent-style proof.Comment: In Proceedings HaTT 2016, arXiv:1606.0542
