    The Red Queen Hypothesis and Improvisational Capabilities for Resilience: A Study of Korean Online Gaming Industry

    Developing organizational resilience (OR) is now one of the core competencies for organizations’ survival. Yet, OR development, as a response to disruptions, is context specific. With previous studies highlighting the type of disruption addressed, we find that the technology-incurred disruptions have received less spotlight due to the prevailing ‘pro-ICT bias’. However, technology may also heavily disrupt organizations. Should an organization not be resilient towards it, its survival can be at risk. Among various methods and means of developing OR, digital resilience, which is to utilize information systems to develop resilience, is known to be critical. Therefore, we ask the following research question “How do organizations develop digital resilience addressing technology-driven disruptions? .     Analysis of Resilience Situations for Complex Engineered Systems – the Resilience Holon

    Improving the resilience of complex engineered and engineering systems (CES) includes planning for complex resilience situations, in which there may be multiple threats, interactions, and disruptions. One challenge in the modeling of CES is the identification of how interactions in a complex situation occur and their combined influence on CES resilience. This article presents a resilience holon that can be used to analyze complex resilience situations. It is made up of 24 elements (defining types of resilience, threats, interactions, and disruptions), which have varying importance to specific situations. Holons can be linked together hierarchically or in a network. An application of the resilience holon to a documented real-world resilience situation, widespread flooding in a city, illustrates its use. Pathways taken by threats and disruptions, as the flood effects cascaded through the city, are shown as connections between holons. The resilience holon could be used to decompose diverse resilience situations involving CES, to identify where critical vulnerability points are and how the whole resilience situation could be improved. The visual nature of the resilience holon could be used in an interactive way, allowing stakeholders to better understand the full resilience picture of CES that they use or operate

    Cyber resiliency for digital enterprises: A strategic leadership perspective

    As organizations increasingly view information as one of their most valuable assets, which supports the creation and distribution of their products and services, information security will be an integral part of the design and operation of organizational business processes. Yet, risks associated with cyber attacks are on the rise. Organizations that are subjected to attacks can suffer significant reputational damage as well as loss of information and knowledge. As a consequence, effective leadership is cited as a critical factor for ensuring corporate level attention for information security. However, there is a lack of empirical understanding as to the roles strategic leaders play in shaping and supporting the cyber security strategy. This study seeks to address this gap in the literature by focusing on how senior leaders support the cyber security strategy. The authors conducted a series of exploratory interviews with leaders in the positions of Chief Information Officer, Chief Security Information Officer, and Chief Technology Officer. The findings revealed that leaders are engaged in both transitional, where the focus is on improving governance and integration, and transformational support, which involves fostering a new cultural mindset for cyber resiliency and the development of an ecosystem approach to security thinking. Managerial relevance statement Our findings provide interesting insights for managers particularly those in the role of Chief Information Officers (CIOs), Chief Security Information Officers (CSIOs), and Chief Technology Officers (CTOs). We propose a Cyber Security Strategy Framework (CSSF) which can be used by these information/technology managers to design an effective organizational strategy to develop cyber resilience in their organization. Our framework suggests that managers should focus on transitional and transformational support. The transitional support focuses on improving governance and integration whereas transformational support focuses on the emphasis of fostering a new cultural mindset for cyber resiliency and the development of an ecosystem approach to security thinking. Our findings provide good evidence showing how leaders can support more effective cyber security initiatives

    Conceptualizing Digital Resilience: An Intellectual Capital Perspective

    In the current era of digital transformations, numerous organizations integrate information and communication technologies (ICTs) into their core operations. However, such transformations can lead to novel risks that have to be governed in the face of disruptions. The emergence of a new risk landscape has given rise to new concepts aimed at safeguarding ICT-based operations. One of these is digital resilience (DR), a complex concept that has recently received attention from academia and regulatory bodies. However, prior work has often studied it inconsistently and offered different suggestions on how to build DR. To foster a comprehensive understanding of DR within information systems (IS), we have conducted a systematic literature review and conceptualized the problem by drawing on intellectual capital (IC) theory. We contribute to research and organizational practice by offering a novel framework with three main sub-capabilities and a comprehensive range of supporting micro-foundation, which unveils areas for future research

    Collaborative networks: A pillar of digital transformation

Besides technology, this process also involves new organizational forms and leads to new business models. As such, this work addresses the contribution of collaborative networks to such a transformation. An analysis of the collaborative aspects required in the various dimensions of the 4th industrial revolution is conducted based on a literature survey and experiences gained from several research projects. A mapping between the identified collaboration needs and research results that can be adopted from the collaborative networks area is presented. Furthermore, several new research challenges are identified and briefly characterized.publishe
