Concept for a commercial space station laboratory
The concept of a privately owned and operated fee-for-service laboratory as an element of a civil manned space station, envisioned as the venture of a group of private investors and an experienced laboratory operator to be undertaken with the cooperation of NASA is discussed. This group would acquire, outfit, activate, and operate the labortory on a fee-for-service basis, providing laboratory services to commercial firms, universities, and government agencies, including NASA. This concept was developed to identify, stimulate, and assist potential commercial users of a manned space station. A number of the issues which would be related to the concept, including the terms under which NASA might consider permitting private ownership and operation of a major space station component, the policies with respect to international participation in the construction and use of the space station, the basis for charging users for services received from the space station, and the types of support that NASA might be willing to provide to assist private industry in carrying out such a venture are discussed
Universalities in One-electron Properties of Limit Quasi-periodic Lattices
We investigate one-electron properties of one-dimensional self-similar
structures called limit quasi-periodic lattices. The trace map of such a
lattice is nonconservative in contrast to the quasi-periodic case, and we can
determine the structure of its attractor. It allows us to obtain the three new
features of the present system: 1) The multi-fractal characters of the energy
spectra are {\it universal}. 2) The supports of the -spectra extend
over the whole unit interval, . 3) There exist marginal critical

Challenges for Superstring Cosmology
We consider whether current notions about superstring theory below the Planck
scale are compatible with cosmology. We find that the anticipated form for the
dilaton interaction creates a serious roadblock for inflation and makes it
unlikely that the universe ever reaches a state with zero cosmological constant

Spatiotemporal Stacked Sequential Learning for Pedestrian Detection
Pedestrian classifiers decide which image windows contain a pedestrian. In
practice, such classifiers provide a relatively high response at neighbor
windows overlapping a pedestrian, while the responses around potential false
positives are expected to be lower. An analogous reasoning applies for image
sequences. If there is a pedestrian located within a frame, the same pedestrian
is expected to appear close to the same location in neighbor frames. Therefore,
such a location has chances of receiving high classification scores during
several frames, while false positives are expected to be more spurious. In this
paper we propose to exploit such correlations for improving the accuracy of
base pedestrian classifiers. In particular, we propose to use two-stage
classifiers which not only rely on the image descriptors required by the base
classifiers but also on the response of such base classifiers in a given
spatiotemporal neighborhood. More specifically, we train pedestrian classifiers
using a stacked sequential learning (SSL) paradigm. We use a new pedestrian
dataset we have acquired from a car to evaluate our proposal at different frame
rates. We also test on a well known dataset: Caltech. The obtained results show
that our SSL proposal boosts detection accuracy significantly with a minimal
impact on the computational cost. Interestingly, SSL improves more the accuracy
at the most dangerous situations, i.e. when a pedestrian is close to the
