Analyzing the Impact of Structural Change in Iranian Agricultural Credit System

    Get PDF
Replacement of the traditional interest based credit system with an Islamic credit system was one of the fundamental changes in Iran since 1979. The Islamic credit system, offers the prospect of risk sharing between the borrower and the lender. Small farmers are likely to be risk averse and they are reluctant to go heavily into debt in order to finance investments in new technology and capital intensive methods of production which they perceive to be risky. Farmer's decision making behaviour with regard to risk under the Islamic and interest based credit systems are explored with the aid of a simple conceptual model. Analysis of attitudinal data suggests that the majority of small farmers prefer credit provided under the Islamic credit system. Farmers' preferences for taking out loans from an Islamic credit system were found to be related to a number of factors. Risk sharing and religious acceptability of the profit and loss sharing loans over the interest based loans were two significant reasons.Islamic credit System, Iran, Agriculture, risk sharing, Agricultural Finance, Risk and Uncertainty,

The paper measures the U.S. Farm Credit System’s technical efficiency from 2000 to 2009 using a stochastic frontier production function model with quarterly unbalanced panel data. The paper's results suggest that the FCS has not efficiently utilized their inputs. On an average, the system realizes only 9.7% of their technical abilities in raising their loans, leases and investment. The efficiency of the whole system is estimated to slightly increase over time even during financial crisis period from 2007. Among the system, a significant difference in efficiency between the 5 Banks and the Associations has been found. On average, the Banks have higher technical efficiency of 62.4% compared to that of 7.7% of the associations. The efficiency of the latter increases by a small rate over time during 2004-2009 periods while efficiency of the former is more time-varying and experiences the opposite pattern. No evidence about the impact of financial crisis on the system efficiency was found.Farm Credit System, agricultural lenders, technical efficiency, financial crisis, stochastic frontier production function, financial reform, Agricultural Finance,

Development and Prospects of the Greek Cooperative Credit System

The credit cooperative system was established in Greece in 1993, following the creation of the appropriate legislative framework. The Greek system distinguishes two types of institutions: the cooperative bank that functions as a bank and the credit cooperative that cannot provide banking services. The Greek cooperative system is characterized by the autonomous and nonhomogenous development of the cooperative banks and credit cooperatives. Moreover, in 2001 the cooperative banks created a central nation-wide bank that has since helped the further development of the credit cooperative system. However and despite the large number of geographic departments involved in the credit cooperative system, the expansion of cooperative banks in the Greek bank market is limited, principally due to legislative restrictions and the lack of dynamism these restrictions create to the credit cooperative system, while operating in a very competitive market environment.Cooperative bank, Credit union, Credit cooperative, Cooperative credit system, Greece, Agribusiness,
