The pros and cons of using SDL for creation of distributed services
In a competitive market for the creation of complex distributed services, time to market, development cost, maintenance and flexibility are key issues. Optimizing the development process is very much a matter of optimizing the technologies used during service creation. This paper reports on the experience gained in the Service Creation projects SCREEN and TOSCA on use of the language SDL for efficient service creation
Distributed urban traffic applications based on CORBA event services
Intelligent transportation systems (ITS) in urban environments are based today on
modern embedded systems with enhanced digital connectivity and higher processing capabilities,
supporting distributed applications working in a cooperative manner. This paper provides an
overview about modern cooperative ITS equipments and presents a distributed application to
be used in an urban data network. As a case example, an application based on an embedded
CORBA-compliant middleware layer and several computer vision equipments is presented.
Results prove the feasibility of distributed applications for building intelligent urban

The Impact of the Internet on Telecommunication Architectures
The ever-growing popularity of the Internet is dramatically changing the landscape of the communications market place. The two separate worlds of the Internet and Telecommunications are converging. The respective advantages of the two environments are being integrated to fulfill the promise of the information super-highways. In this paper, we examine the impact of the Internet on the main telecommunication architectures, namely the IN, the TMN and TINA. There are two new tendencies for implementing telephony services in combination with the Internet: running part of the control sys tem over the Internet, or conveying both the user data and the control information over the Internet. We examine these two trends, and elaborate on possible ways of salvaging the best parts of the work achieved by the TINA-Consortium in the Internet context
Integration of Internet and Telecommunications- An Architecture for Hybrid Services
In this article, we propose an architecture for hybrid services, i.e., services that span many network technologies, such as the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), cellular networks and networks based on the Internet Protocol (IP). These services will play an important role in the future because they leverage on the existing infrastructures, rather than requiring new and sophisticated mechanisms to be deployed. We explore a few issues related to hybrid services and propose a platform, as well as a set of components, to facilitate their creation and deployment. The existing infrastructure is only required to generate specific events when requests for hybrid services are detected. We present the design of a service layer, based on Java, that handles the treatment of these special requests. Our service layer is provided with a set of generic components realized according to the JavaBeans model. We illustrate the strength of our architecture by discussing two hybrid-service examples: a calendar service and a call forwarding service

Network-based business process management: embedding business logic in communications networks
Advanced Business Process Management (BPM) tools enable the decomposition of previously integrated and often ill-defined processes into re-usable process modules. These process modules can subsequently be distributed on the Internet over a variety of many different actors, each with their own specialization and economies-of-scale. The economic benefits of process specialization can be huge. However, how should such actors in a business network find, select, and control, the best partner for what part of the business process, in such a way that the best result is achieved? This particular management challenge requires more advanced techniques and tools in the enabling communications networks. An approach has been developed to embed business logic into the communications networks in order to optimize the allocation of business resources from a network point of view. Robotics software frameworks for multi-agent robotic systems development
Robotics is an area of research in which the paradigm of Multi-Agent Systems (MAS) can prove to be highly
useful. Multi-Agent Systems come in the form of cooperative robots in a team, sensor networks based on
mobile robots, and robots in Intelligent Environments, to name but a few. However, the development
of Multi-Agent Robotic Systems (MARS) still presents major challenges. Over the past decade, a high
number of Robotics Software Frameworks (RSFs) have appeared which propose some solutions to the
most recurrent problems in robotics. Some of these frameworks, such as ROS, YARP, OROCOS, ORCA,
Open-RTM, and Open-RDK, possess certain characteristics and provide the basic infrastructure necessary
for the development of MARS. The contribution of this work is the identification of such characteristics
as well as the analysis of these frameworks in comparison with the general-purpose Multi-Agent System

A middleware for a large array of cameras
Large arrays of cameras are increasingly being employed for producing high quality image sequences needed for motion analysis research. This leads to the logistical problem with coordination and control of a large number of cameras. In this paper, we used a lightweight multi-agent system for coordinating such camera arrays. The agent framework provides more than a remote sensor access API. It allows reconfigurable and transparent access to cameras, as well as software agents capable of intelligent processing. Furthermore, it eases maintenance by encouraging code reuse. Additionally, our agent system includes an automatic discovery mechanism at startup, and multiple language bindings. Performance tests showed the lightweight nature of the framework while validating its correctness and scalability. Two different camera agents were implemented to provide access to a large array of distributed cameras. Correct operation of these camera agents was confirmed via several image processing agents
