Research has indicated the potential of career education for academic credit at university. This case study describes how a university careers service integrated careers education workshops into the academic curriculum of an engineering and surveying faculty. Workshops on Job Skills and Career Transition were presented to 118 undergraduate students. Participants completed assignments for academic credit. These were 'marked' by career counsellors and follow-up careers counselling was provided to interested individuals. This pilot project confirms the utility of curriculum-integrated career education. Implications for career education across an entire undergraduate degree course and on-line education are raised

Effect of a magnetic field on molecule-solvent angular momentum transfer

Recently it was shown that a molecule rotating in a quantum solvent can be described in terms of the `angulon' quasiparticle [Phys. Rev. Lett. 118, 095301 (2017)]. Here we extend the angulon theory to the case of molecules possessing an additional spin-1/2 degree of freedom and study the behavior of the system in the presence of a static magnetic field. We show that exchange of angular momentum between the molecule and the solvent can be altered by the field, even though the solvent itself is non-magnetic. In particular, we demonstrate a possibility to control resonant emission of phonons with a given angular momentum using a magnetic field.Comment: 8+5 pages; 4 figures; accepted versio

Judge's Consideration in Imposing Criminal Penalties Falsification in Decision No. 118 PID.B/2018/PN Tgl. Skripsi. Tegal: Law Faculty Faculty of Law Study Program, Tegal Pancasakti University. 2020. The falsification of a letter is a form of crime that is still poorly understood by the public, including law enforcement officials, especially regarding the consequences. Counterfeiting is a type of violation of two basic norms, namely truth (trust) and public order, the violators are classified as a crime group against the state / public order. This study aims: (1) to examine the legal considerations of judges in issuing decisions in case No. 118/Pid.B/2018/PN.Tgl, (2) to find out the application of the law against falsification of letters in the decision No. 118/Pid.B /2018/PN.Tgl. The type of research used is library research with an empirical normative legal research approach with a judicial case study approach. The main data source used in this study is secondary data with the method of collecting literature and document study data. Data analysis method used is a qualitative method that is analyzed normatively qualitatively. The results of this study indicate: 1) Judge considerations in case No. 118/Pid.B/2018/PN.Tgl which has been explained above, it was concluded that the panel of judges in passing the decision had used judicial and non-juridical considerations, the Defendant's actions had fulfilled all elements of Article 263 Paragraph (1) of the Criminal Code committing "Counterfeiting Criminal Acts Letter". Legal considerations of judges in passing the verdict in case number 118 / Pid.B/2018/PN.Tgl is in accordance with the provisions of KUHP articles. Judge's considerations in this case adhere to the Wettelijik Negative system, which is that the judge not only relies on the verdict only on the evidence, but also requires the judge's conviction that the criminal act charged was indeed true. 2) Application of the law to the falsification of the letter in the decision No. 118/Pid.B/2018/PN. Tgl is based on Article 263 Paragraph (1) of the Criminal Code. The application of this article is still taking into account Article 185 paragraph (6) of the Criminal Code, to obtain the conviction that a criminal act actually occurred and that the defendant is guilty of doing it. Based on the results of this study are expected to be material information and input for students, academics, practitioners, and all parties in need in the Faculty of Law, University of Pancasakti Tegal. Keywords: Considerations, Criminal Sanctions, and Falsification of Letters

Life as a sober citizen : Aldo Leopold\u27s Wildlife Ecology 118.

This historic case study addressed the issue of the lack of citizen action toward environmentally responsible behavior. Although there have been studies regarding components of environmental responsible behavior [ERB], there has been little focus on historic models of exemplary figures of ERB. This study examined one of the first conservation courses in the United States, Wildlife Ecology 118, taught by Aldo Leopold (1887-1948) for 13 years at the University of Wisconsin. Today, Aldo Leopold is recognized as an exemplary conservationist whose land ethic is cited as providing the ecological approach needed for understanding the complex issues of modern society. The researcher conjectured that examination of one of the first environmental education courses could support and strengthen environmental education practices by providing a heuristic perspective. The researcher used two different strategies for analysis of the case. For Research Question One-- What were Leopold\u27s teaching strategies in Wildlife Ecology 118? --the researcher used methods of comparative historical analysis. The researcher examined the learning outcomes that Leopold used in Wildlife Ecology 118 and compared them against a rubric of the Four Strands for Environmental Education (North American Association for Environmental Education [NAAEE], 1999). The Four Strands for Environmental Education are the current teaching strategies used by educators. The results indicated that Wildlife Ecology 118 scored high in Knowledge of Processes and Systems and Environmental Problem Solving strands. Leopold relied on historic case examples and animal biographies to build stories that engaged students. Field trips gave students practical experience for environmental knowledge with special emphasis on phenology. For Research Question Two-- What was the context of the lessons in Wildlife Ecology 118? --the researcher used environmental history methods for analysis. Context provided the knowledge and understanding of Leopold\u27s choices for developing lessons that he thought would engage students to become environmentally responsible citizens. The contexts were grouped into four categories: (a) work and research related, (b) professional development, (c) leisure and, (d) public service. There were five themes that emerged from the course contexts: (a) case histories, (b) animal biographies, (c) phenology application, (d) food chains, and (e) ecosystems. The results of the study indicated that Wildlife Ecology 118 ranks high in areas of environmental problem solving and knowledge of processes and systems. Both of the areas are often difficult for educators to incorporate in their lessons. Through case histories, animal biographies, phenology, ecological diagrams, ecosystem comparisons and field trips, Leopold provides many examples that can be easily updated and used in current classroom practices, both in K-12 and college levels

Electron operator at the edge of the 1/3 fractional quantum Hall liquid

This study builds upon the work of Palacios and MacDonald (Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 76}, 118 (1996)), wherein they identify the bosonic excitations of Wen's approach for the edge of the 1/3 fractional quantum Hall state with certain operators introduced by Stone. Using a quantum Monte Carlo method, we extend to larger systems containing up to 40 electrons and obtain more accurate thermodynamic limits for various matrix elements for a short range interaction. The results are in agreement with those of Palacios and MacDonald for small systems, but offer further insight into the detailed approach to the thermodynamic limit. For the short range interaction, the results are consistent with the chiral Luttinger liquid predictions. We also study excitations using the Coulomb ground state for up to nine electrons to ascertain the effect of interactions on the results; in this case our tests of the chiral Luttinger liquid approach are inconclusive.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figure

Effect of baseline meteorological data selection on hydrological modelling of climate change scenarios

    Get PDF
This study evaluates how differences in hydrological model parameterisation resulting from the choice of gridded global precipitation data sets and reference evapotranspiration (ETo) equations affects simulated climate change impacts, using the north western Himalayan Beas river catchment as a case study. Six combinations of baseline precipitation data (the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) and the Asian Precipitation – Highly Resolved Observational Data Integration Towards Evaluation of Water Resources (APHRODITE)) and Reference Evapotranspiration equations of differing complexity and data requirements (Penman-Monteith, Hargreaves –Samani and Priestley – Taylor) were used in the calibration of the HySim model. Although the six validated hydrological models had similar historical model performance (Nash–Sutcliffe model efficiency coefficient (NSE) from 0.64-0.70), impact response surfaces derived using a scenario neutral approach demonstrated significant deviations in the models’ responses to changes in future annual precipitation and temperature. For example, the change in Q10 varies between -6.5 % to -11.5% in the driest and coolest climate change simulation and +79% to +118% in the wettest and hottest climate change simulation among the six models. The results demonstrate that the baseline meteorological data choices made in model construction significantly condition the magnitude of simulated hydrological impacts of climate change, with important implications for impact study design.NER
