Realities of long-term post investment performance for venture-backed enterprises

This paper constructs a model of long-run performance for SMEs that have received venture capital backing. The model explains performance by financial structure. FAME data are used for estimating performance equations over the period 1989 to 2004 for UK businesses in their post-investment period. The econometrics uses robust techniques, including least absolute error (LAE) and Tukey trimean estimation. It is shown that the key determinants of performance (measured by ROSF) are profit margins and risk, with lesser, but significant, roles played by liquidity and gearing. The sample is used to identify consistently high performers, and chronic low performers. From the latter group, two detailed case studies illustrate how chronic low performance can emerge, in each case caused by failure to achieve technological milestones, and thereby failing, ultimately, to convince investors of potential company worth

Integration of decision support systems to improve decision support performance

Decision support system (DSS) is a well-established research and development area. Traditional isolated, stand-alone DSS has been recently facing new challenges. In order to improve the performance of DSS to meet the challenges, research has been actively carried out to develop integrated decision support systems (IDSS). This paper reviews the current research efforts with regard to the development of IDSS. The focus of the paper is on the integration aspect for IDSS through multiple perspectives, and the technologies that support this integration. More than 100 papers and software systems are discussed. Current research efforts and the development status of IDSS are explained, compared and classified. In addition, future trends and challenges in integration are outlined. The paper concludes that by addressing integration, better support will be provided to decision makers, with the expectation of both better decisions and improved decision making processes

Contemporary analysis and architecture for a generic cloud-based sensor data management platform.

An increasing volume of data is being generated by sensors and smart devices deployed in different areas, often far from computing facilities such as data centres. These data can be difficult to gather and process using local computing infrastructure. This is due to cost and limited resources. Cloud computing provides scalable resources that are capable of addressing such problems. However, platform-independent methods of gathering and transmitting sensor data to Clouds are not widely available. This paper presents a state-of-the-art analysis of Cloud-based sensor monitoring and data gathering platforms. It discusses their strengths and weaknesses and reviews the current trends in this area. Informed by the analysis, the paper further proposes a generic conceptual architecture for achieving a platform-neutral Cloud-based sensor monitoring and data gathering platform. We also discuss the objectives, design decisions and the implementation considerations for the conceptual architecture.IC

Visual Networking

This research presents a case study of the Regis Academic Research Network (ARNe). It will focus on network bandwidth graphs and the information collected over a six month period of time. The case study will provide comparison of network bandwidth graphs. This case study will be used to theorize what is happening on the ARNE. In addition it will be used for creating hypotheses on what will happen to the network in the future. The research will also include a project. The project is to provide the setup and planning of the installation of open source tool set. This project will give Regis network administrators a useful tool in troubleshooting and planning with regards to the ARNE

The Intellectual Core Of Electronic Commerce Research From 2006 To 2010

The purpose of this paper is to explore the intellectual core of electronic commerce (e-commerce) research. Data was collected from the top six e-commerce journals (Lowry, Romans, & Curtis, 2004), the International Journal of Electronic Commerce, MIS Quarterly, Electronic Market, Journal of MIS, Information Systems Research, Management Sciences from 2006-2010. A total of 1056 electronic commerce related articles and 33036 references were identified. There were 47 high value research articles identified using a citation and co-citation analysis. Using factor analysis we identified five research areas: trust, technology acceptance and technology application, e-commerce task-related application, e-markets, and information systems success. The findings of this study provide core knowledge and directions for researchers and practitioners interested in the electronic commerce field

The sharing economy is a new industrial structure that is made possible by instantaneous internet communication and changes in the life, work, and purchasing habits of individual entrepreneurs and consumers. Antitrust law is an economic regulatory scheme dating back to 1890 in the United States that is designed to address centrally controlled concentrations of economic power and the threats that those concentrations pose to consumer interests and economic efficiency. In order to accommodate a modern enterprise structure in which thousands or millions of independent contractors join forces to provide a service by agreement among themselves, antitrust law requires re-envisioning and careful application. The success of Uber, Airbnb, and other sharing economy firms, and the consumer benefits that those firms promise, show both how difficult and how important that re-envisioning can be

From theory to practice: A case study of technology-enhanced O2O teaching

Stimulated by the isolation requirement of COVID-19 lockdown, online teaching method has been widely adopted by worldwide academic institutions and has been playing an essential role in accelerating education reform. While both traditional classroom teaching and pure online teaching have their drawbacks, an integrated online to offline (O2O) precision teaching model is considered to be the new trend. With the support of information technology, O2O precision teaching is capable of monitoring students’ behavior closely and tailoring the curriculum for each student. This study designed a detailed platform-based O2O precision teaching model and applied it to the Chinese Business Culture course teaching. Traditional offline teaching was also conducted as a control. Both test scores and student feedback were collected and analyzed. Results show that the technology-enhanced O2O precision teaching model can improve students’ test performance and various soft skills and has their high degree of satisfaction in the meantime, indicating that it can work as a promising new teaching model
