Oblivious Bounds on the Probability of Boolean Functions
This paper develops upper and lower bounds for the probability of Boolean
functions by treating multiple occurrences of variables as independent and
assigning them new individual probabilities. We call this approach dissociation
and give an exact characterization of optimal oblivious bounds, i.e. when the
new probabilities are chosen independent of the probabilities of all other
variables. Our motivation comes from the weighted model counting problem (or,
equivalently, the problem of computing the probability of a Boolean function),
which is #P-hard in general. By performing several dissociations, one can
transform a Boolean formula whose probability is difficult to compute, into one
whose probability is easy to compute, and which is guaranteed to provide an
upper or lower bound on the probability of the original formula by choosing
appropriate probabilities for the dissociated variables. Our new bounds shed
light on the connection between previous relaxation-based and model-based
approximations and unify them as concrete choices in a larger design space. We
also show how our theory allows a standard relational database management
system (DBMS) to both upper and lower bound hard probabilistic queries in
guaranteed polynomial time.Comment: 34 pages, 14 figures, supersedes: http://arxiv.org/abs/1105.281

Propositional semantics for default logic
We present new semantics for propositional default logic based on the notion of meta-interpretations - truth functions that assign truth values to clauses rather than letters. This leads to a propositional characterization of default theories: for each such finite theory, we show a classical propositional theory such that there is a one-to-one correspondence between models for the latter and extensions of the former. This means that computing an extension and answering questions about coherence, set-membership, and set-entailment are reducible to propositional satisfiability. The general transformation is exponential but tractable for a subset which we call 2-DT which is a superset of network default theories and disjunction-free default theories. This leads to the observation that coherence and membership for the class 2-DT is NP-complete and entailment is co-NP-complete.Since propositional satisfiability can be regarded as a constraint satisfaction problem (CSP), this work also paves the way for applying CSP techniques to default reasoning. In particular, we use the taxonomy of tractable CSP to identify new tractable subsets for Reiter's default logic. Our procedures allow also for computing stable models of extended logic programs
Expressive Completeness of Existential Rule Languages for Ontology-based Query Answering
Existential rules, also known as data dependencies in Databases, have been
recently rediscovered as a promising family of languages for Ontology-based
Query Answering. In this paper, we prove that disjunctive embedded dependencies
exactly capture the class of recursively enumerable ontologies in
Ontology-based Conjunctive Query Answering (OCQA). Our expressive completeness
result does not rely on any built-in linear order on the database. To establish
the expressive completeness, we introduce a novel semantic definition for OCQA
ontologies. We also show that neither the class of disjunctive tuple-generating
dependencies nor the class of embedded dependencies is expressively complete
for recursively enumerable OCQA ontologies.Comment: 10 pages; the full version of a paper to appear in IJCAI 2016.

Symmetry-breaking Answer Set Solving
In the context of Answer Set Programming, this paper investigates
symmetry-breaking to eliminate symmetric parts of the search space and,
thereby, simplify the solution process. We propose a reduction of disjunctive
logic programs to a coloured digraph such that permutational symmetries can be
constructed from graph automorphisms. Symmetries are then broken by introducing
symmetry-breaking constraints. For this purpose, we formulate a preprocessor
that integrates a graph automorphism system. Experiments demonstrate its
computational impact.Comment: Proceedings of ICLP'10 Workshop on Answer Set Programming and Other
