    Joint Modeling of Content and Discourse Relations in Dialogues

    We present a joint modeling approach to identify salient discussion points in spoken meetings as well as to label the discourse relations between speaker turns. A variation of our model is also discussed when discourse relations are treated as latent variables. Experimental results on two popular meeting corpora show that our joint model can outperform state-of-the-art approaches for both phrase-based content selection and discourse relation prediction tasks. We also evaluate our model on predicting the consistency among team members' understanding of their group decisions. Classifiers trained with features constructed from our model achieve significant better predictive performance than the state-of-the-art.Comment: Accepted by ACL 2017. 11 page

    Extractive Summarization : Experimental work on nursing notes in Finnish

    Natural Language Processing (NLP) is a subfield of artificial intelligence and linguistics that is concerned with how a computer machine interacts with human language. With the increasing computational power and the advancement in technologies, researchers have been successful at proposing various NLP tasks that have already been implemented as real-world applications today. Automated text summarization is one of the many tasks that has not yet completely matured particularly in health sector. A success in this task would enable healthcare professionals to grasp patient's history in a minimal time resulting in faster decisions required for better care. Automatic text summarization is a process that helps shortening a large text without sacrificing important information. This could be achieved by paraphrasing the content known as the abstractive method or by concatenating relevant extracted sentences namely the extractive method. In general, this process requires the conversion of text into numerical form and then a method is executed to identify and extract relevant text. This thesis is an attempt of exploring NLP techniques used in extractive text summarization particularly in health domain. The work includes a comparison of basic summarizing models implemented on a corpus of patient notes written by nurses in Finnish language. Concepts and research studies required to understand the implementation have been documented along with the description of the code. A python-based project is structured to build a corpus and execute multiple summarizing models. For this thesis, we observe the performance of two textual embeddings namely Term Frequency - Inverse Document Frequency (TF-IDF) which is based on simple statistical measure and Word2Vec which is based on neural networks. For both models, LexRank, an unsupervised stochastic graph-based sentence scoring algorithm, is used for sentence extraction and a random selection method is used as a baseline method for evaluation. To evaluate and compare the performance of models, summaries of 15 patient care episodes of each model were provided to two human beings for manual evaluations. According to the results of the small sample dataset, we observe that both evaluators seem to agree with each other in preferring summaries produced by Word2Vec LexRank over the summaries generated by TF-IDF LexRank. Both models have also been observed, by both evaluators, to perform better than the baseline model of random selection

    Keyphrase Generation: A Multi-Aspect Survey

    Extractive keyphrase generation research has been around since the nineties, but the more advanced abstractive approach based on the encoder-decoder framework and sequence-to-sequence learning has been explored only recently. In fact, more than a dozen of abstractive methods have been proposed in the last three years, producing meaningful keyphrases and achieving state-of-the-art scores. In this survey, we examine various aspects of the extractive keyphrase generation methods and focus mostly on the more recent abstractive methods that are based on neural networks. We pay particular attention to the mechanisms that have driven the perfection of the later. A huge collection of scientific article metadata and the corresponding keyphrases is created and released for the research community.     A Comparative Study of Text Summarization on E-mail Data Using Unsupervised Learning Approaches

    Over the last few years, email has met with enormous popularity. People send and receive a lot of messages every day, connect with colleagues and friends, share files and information. Unfortunately, the email overload outbreak has developed into a personal trouble for users as well as a financial concerns for businesses. Accessing an ever-increasing number of lengthy emails in the present generation has become a major concern for many users. Email text summarization is a promising approach to resolve this challenge. Email messages are general domain text, unstructured and not always well developed syntactically. Such elements introduce challenges for study in text processing, especially for the task of summarization. This research employs a quantitative and inductive methodologies to implement the Unsupervised learning models that addresses summarization task problem, to efficiently generate more precise summaries and to determine which approach of implementing Unsupervised clustering models outperform the best. The precision score from ROUGE-N metrics is used as the evaluation metrics in this research. This research evaluates the performance in terms of the precision score of four different approaches of text summarization by using various combinations of feature embedding technique like Word2Vec /BERT model and hybrid/conventional clustering algorithms. The results reveals that both the approaches of using Word2Vec and BERT feature embedding along with hybrid PHA-ClusteringGain k-Means algorithm achieved increase in the precision when compared with the conventional k-means clustering model. Among those hybrid approaches performed, the one using Word2Vec as feature embedding method attained 55.73% as maximum precision value

    The ACL OCL Corpus: advancing Open science in Computational Linguistics

    We present a scholarly corpus from the ACL Anthology to assist Open scientific research in the Computational Linguistics domain, named as ACL OCL. Compared with previous ARC and AAN versions, ACL OCL includes structured full-texts with logical sections, references to figures, and links to a large knowledge resource (semantic scholar). ACL OCL contains 74k scientific papers, together with 210k figures extracted up to September 2022. To observe the development in the computational linguistics domain, we detect the topics of all OCL papers with a supervised neural model. We observe ''Syntax: Tagging, Chunking and Parsing'' topic is significantly shrinking and ''Natural Language Generation'' is resurging.     A framework for the Comparative analysis of text summarization techniques

    Dissertation presented as the partial requirement for obtaining a Master's degree in Data Science and Advanced Analytics, specialization in Data ScienceWe see that with the boom of information technology and IOT (Internet of things), the size of information which is basically data is increasing at an alarming rate. This information can always be harnessed and if channeled into the right direction, we can always find meaningful information. But the problem is this data is not always numerical and there would be problems where the data would be completely textual, and some meaning has to be derived from it. If one would have to go through these texts manually, it would take hours or even days to get a concise and meaningful information out of the text. This is where a need for an automatic summarizer arises easing manual intervention, reducing time and cost but at the same time retaining the key information held by these texts. In the recent years, new methods and approaches have been developed which would help us to do so. These approaches are implemented in lot of domains, for example, Search engines provide snippets as document previews, while news websites produce shortened descriptions of news subjects, usually as headlines, to make surfing easier. Broadly speaking, there are mainly two ways of text summarization – extractive and abstractive summarization. Extractive summarization is the approach in which important sections of the whole text are filtered out to form the condensed form of the text. While the abstractive summarization is the approach in which the text as a whole is interpreted and examined and after discerning the meaning of the text, sentences are generated by the model itself describing the important points in a concise way

    Keywords at Work: Investigating Keyword Extraction in Social Media Applications

    This dissertation examines a long-standing problem in Natural Language Processing (NLP) -- keyword extraction -- from a new angle. We investigate how keyword extraction can be formulated on social media data, such as emails, product reviews, student discussions, and student statements of purpose. We design novel graph-based features for supervised and unsupervised keyword extraction from emails, and use the resulting system with success to uncover patterns in a new dataset -- student statements of purpose. Furthermore, the system is used with new features on the problem of usage expression extraction from product reviews, where we obtain interesting insights. The system while used on student discussions, uncover new and exciting patterns. While each of the above problems is conceptually distinct, they share two key common elements -- keywords and social data. Social data can be messy, hard-to-interpret, and not easily amenable to existing NLP resources. We show that our system is robust enough in the face of such challenges to discover useful and important patterns.
