The Normative and the Evaluative: The Buck-Passing Account of Value
Many have been attracted to the idea that for something to be good there just have to be reasons to favour it. This view has come to be known as the buck-passing account of value. According to this account, for pleasure to be good there need to be reasons for us to desire and pursue it. Likewise for liberty and equality to be values there have to be reasons for us to promote and preserve them. Extensive discussion has focussed on some of the problems that the buck-passing account faces, such as the 'wrong kind of reason' problem. Less attention, however, has been paid as to why we should accept the buck-passing account or what the theoretical pay-offs and other implications of accepting it are. The Normative and the Evaluative provides the first comprehensive motivation and defence of the buck-passing account of value. Richard Rowland argues that the buck-passing account explains several important features of the relationship between reasons and value, as well as the relationship between the different varieties of value, in a way that its competitors do not. He shows that alternatives to the buck-passing account are inconsistent with important views in normative ethics, uninformative, and at odds with the way in which we should see practical and epistemic normativity as related. In addition, he extends the buck-passing account to provide an account of moral properties as well as all other normative and deontic properties and concepts, such as fittingness and ought, in terms of reasons
Development of a DC-DC buck boost converter using fuzzy logic control
A fuzzy controller of DC-DC Buck-boost converter is designed and presented in this

Vacaville, California, Tree Pruners’ Strike of 1932
[Excerpt] Two days after the November 1932 elections, newly elected California congressman Frank H. Buck provoked a massive tree pruners\u27 strike when he announced a wage cut for pruners on his ranch from 1.25 for a nine-hour day. Buck, one the largest growers in the Vacaville fruit growing region, had raised wages to $1.40 during his congressional campaign, promising farmworkers even higher wages if he won the election. Running under the campaign slogan Give Government Back to the People, Buck garnered nearly unanimous support from farmworkers in the Vacaville area. Within days of his victory, after securing the agreement of other orchardists in the area, Buck announced that the 20 percent wage cut would go into effect starting November 14.
On the day the pay cut was to go into effect, 400 Mexican, Filipino, Japanese, and white tree pruners walked off their jobs. Unlike previous agricultural strikes in the region, this was not a spontaneous walkout. Unbeknownst to Buck, the Communist-led Cannery and Agricultural Workers Industrial Union (CAW1U) had been actively organizing workers in the area for several months. By the time Buck made his announcement, more than 250 working tree pruners had joined the union, and strike plans were well developed. The tree pruners\u27 strike was to be the first deliberately organized strike since the CAWIU had started organizing California agricultural workers three years before
Design zero-voltage switching DC-DC buck converter
This report proposes an integrated, high switching frequency, zero-voltage-switching
dc-dc buck converter for battery charger application. The design and analysis of dcdc buck converter with integrated inductor is presented. The converter has been
optimized to convert 12V input voltage to 5V at 1.5A maximum load current at
50MHz switching frequency. The converter has been simulated using an ORCAD
16.5 based simulation tool and result show that the switching losses using zerovoltage-switching technique is less compared to conventional buck converter
A revision of the genus Potamium (Musci: Sematophyllaceae).
The neotropical genus Potamium as described by Mitten (1869) included species that had little more in common than a growth form adapted to a semi-aquatic habitat. Brotherus divided the genus in section Eu-Potamium and section Potamiopsis, based on peristome characters. This study shows that all species of section Eu-Potamium belong to Sematophyllum, including P. lonchophyllum which was designated as lectotype of Potamium by Buck (1990). In section Potamiopsis two species are recognized: P. vulpinum (Mont.) Mitt. (syn. nov.: Sematophyllum maguireorum Buck) and P. deceptivum Mitt. (syn. nov.: P. leucodontaceum (C.Müll.) Broth., Meiothecium negrense Mitt. and Maguireella vulpina (Mont.) Buck). The genus Potamium is characterized by capsules with an endostome consisting of a low basal membrane and filiform segments, which are often reduced in P. deceptivum. P. vulpinum is designated as lectotype of Potamium and the lectotypification of Buck is rejected. Descriptions, illustrations and a key are provided to the species of Potamium and allied semiaquatic taxa of Sematophyllum
Modeling and Analysis of Power Processing Systems (MAPPS). Volume 2: Appendices
The computer programs and derivations generated in support of the modeling and design optimization program are presented. Programs for the buck regulator, boost regulator, and buck-boost regulator are described. The computer program for the design optimization calculations is presented. Constraints for the boost and buck-boost converter were derived. Derivations of state-space equations and transfer functions are presented. Computer lists for the converters are presented, and the input parameters justified
