    The call for papers for the SIG SVC 2011 workshop notes the importance of service oriented thinking and says that the workshop\u27s goal is to explore the challenges of service orientation in IT. This paper is a conceptual contribution to the discussion. It uses ten suggestions as an organizing scheme for exploring basic questions about the nature and subject matter of service science. The questions are related to topics such as the definition of service and service system, the desirability of privileging service and servitization over products and productization, and the treatment of co-production of value, value constellations, and tradeoffs between conflicting stakeholder interests. The final suggestion is that research publications should declare a stance toward people and organizations related to treating them as though they are fallible humans, dutiful components of service systems, or humans simulating machines

    Imaging Transient Blood Vessel Fusion Events in Zebrafish by Correlative Volume Electron Microscopy

    The study of biological processes has become increasingly reliant on obtaining high-resolution spatial and temporal data through imaging techniques. As researchers demand molecular resolution of cellular events in the context of whole organisms, correlation of non-invasive live-organism imaging with electron microscopy in complex three-dimensional samples becomes critical. The developing blood vessels of vertebrates form a highly complex network which cannot be imaged at high resolution using traditional methods. Here we show that the point of fusion between growing blood vessels of transgenic zebrafish, identified in live confocal microscopy, can subsequently be traced through the structure of the organism using Focused Ion Beam/Scanning Electron Microscopy (FIB/SEM) and Serial Block Face/Scanning Electron Microscopy (SBF/SEM). The resulting data give unprecedented microanatomical detail of the zebrafish and, for the first time, allow visualization of the ultrastructure of a time-limited biological event within the context of a whole organism

    Understanding Legacy Workflows through Runtime Trace Analysis

    abstract: When scientific software is written to specify processes, it takes the form of a workflow, and is often written in an ad-hoc manner in a dynamic programming language. There is a proliferation of legacy workflows implemented by non-expert programmers due to the accessibility of dynamic languages. Unfortunately, ad-hoc workflows lack a structured description as provided by specialized management systems, making ad-hoc workflow maintenance and reuse difficult, and motivating the need for analysis methods. The analysis of ad-hoc workflows using compiler techniques does not address dynamic languages - a program has so few constrains that its behavior cannot be predicted. In contrast, workflow provenance tracking has had success using run-time techniques to record data. The aim of this work is to develop a new analysis method for extracting workflow structure at run-time, thus avoiding issues with dynamics. The method captures the dataflow of an ad-hoc workflow through its execution and abstracts it with a process for simplifying repetition. An instrumentation system first processes the workflow to produce an instrumented version, capable of logging events, which is then executed on an input to produce a trace. The trace undergoes dataflow construction to produce a provenance graph. The dataflow is examined for equivalent regions, which are collected into a single unit. The workflow is thus characterized in terms of its treatment of an input. Unlike other methods, a run-time approach characterizes the workflow's actual behavior; including elements which static analysis cannot predict (for example, code dynamically evaluated based on input parameters). This also enables the characterization of dataflow through external tools. The contributions of this work are: a run-time method for recording a provenance graph from an ad-hoc Python workflow, and a method to analyze the structure of a workflow from provenance. Methods are implemented in Python and are demonstrated on real world Python workflows. These contributions enable users to derive graph structure from workflows. Empowered by a graphical view, users can better understand a legacy workflow. This makes the wealth of legacy ad-hoc workflows accessible, enabling workflow reuse instead of investing time and resources into creating a workflow.Dissertation/ThesisMasters Thesis Computer Science 201

The motivation for this initiative is the growingrecognition of the importance of theorizing the IT artifact and its organizational and societal context from apragmatic and action-oriented perspective.     dissertationAngiogenesis is the process by which new blood vessels sprout from existing vessels, enabling new vascular elements to be added to an existing vasculature network. Mechanical interactions during angiogenesis, i.e., traction forces applied by neovessels and the corresponding deformation of the extracellular matrix (ECM), are important regulators of growth and neovascularization. However, the dynamic relationship between cell-generated forces, the deformation of the ECM, and the topology of the emerging vascular network are poorly understood. The goal of this research was to develop, implement, and validate a computational framework that simulates the dynamic mechanical interaction between angiogenic neovessels and the ECM. This dissertation presents a novel continuous-discrete finite element (FE) model with angiogenic growth coupled with matrix deformation. Angiogenesis was simulated using a discrete growth model. This model uses properties of the ECM, represented by a continuous FE mesh, to regulate angiogenic growth and branching and was capable of accurately predicting vascular morphometric data when simulating growth in various matrix conditions. To couple growth with matrix deformation, sprout forces were applied to the mesh and the corresponding deformation of the matrix was determined using the nonlinear FE software FEBio. This deformation was then used to update the ECM into the current configuration before calculating the next growth step. Data from vascularized gel experiments were used to both calibrate mechanisms within the model during implementation and compare with computational simulations to assess the validity of the simulations. In simulations of experiments involving vascularized collagen gels subjected to various mechanical boundary constraints, this coupled framework accurately predicted gel contraction and microvessel alignment for each condition. The primary mechanism for alignment occurs as microvessels passively align while moving with the deformation of the surrounding matrix. These results demonstrate how biomechanical cellular activity at the microscale during morphogenic processes such as angiogenesis can influence the macroenvironment and induce patterns and organization. These methods provide a flexible computational platform to investigate the mechanisms by which the biomechanical interaction between cells and the ECM regulates the structure and composition of the emerging tissue during morphogenesis

    Information Technology Platforms: Definition and Research Directions

    The concept of an information technology (IT) related platform is broad and covers phenomena ranging from the operating system Linux to the Internet. Such platforms are of increasing importance to innovation and value creation across many facets of industry and daily life. There is, however, a lack of common understanding in both research and industry about what is mean by the term platform when related to IT. This lack of consensus is detrimental to research and knowledge development. Thus, the aims of this study are to: (i) provide a sound definition of the IT-platform concept by identifying its distinguishing dimensions; and (ii) identify important current research directions for the IT-platform concept. To achieve these aims a systematic literature review was undertaken with 133 relevant articles taken from major information systems journals, conferences, and business publications.     Comparison of classical multi-locus sequence typing software for next-generation sequencing data

    Multi-locus sequence typing (MLST) is a widely used method for categorizing bacteria. Increasingly, MLST is being performed using next-generation sequencing (NGS) data by reference laboratories and for clinical diagnostics. Many software applications have been developed to calculate sequence types from NGS data; however, there has been no comprehensive review to date on these methods. We have compared eight of these applications against real and simulated data, and present results on: (1) the accuracy of each method against traditional typing methods, (2) the performance on real outbreak datasets, (3) the impact of contamination and varying depth of coverage, and (4) the computational resource requirements
