    Strengthening the Effectiveness of Pedestrian Detection with Spatially Pooled Features

    We propose a simple yet effective approach to the problem of pedestrian detection which outperforms the current state-of-the-art. Our new features are built on the basis of low-level visual features and spatial pooling. Incorporating spatial pooling improves the translational invariance and thus the robustness of the detection process. We then directly optimise the partial area under the ROC curve (\pAUC) measure, which concentrates detection performance in the range of most practical importance. The combination of these factors leads to a pedestrian detector which outperforms all competitors on all of the standard benchmark datasets. We advance state-of-the-art results by lowering the average miss rate from 13%13\% to 11%11\% on the INRIA benchmark, 41%41\% to 37%37\% on the ETH benchmark, 51%51\% to 42%42\% on the TUD-Brussels benchmark and 36%36\% to 29%29\% on the Caltech-USA benchmark.Comment: 16 pages.     Random convolution ensembles

    A novel method for creating diverse ensembles of image classifiers is proposed. The idea is that, for each base image classifier in the ensemble, a random image transformation is generated and applied to all of the images in the labeled training set. The base classifiers are then learned using features extracted from these randomly transformed versions of the training data, and the result is a highly diverse ensemble of image classifiers. This approach is evaluated on a benchmark pedestrian detection dataset and shown to be effective

    Spatiotemporal Stacked Sequential Learning for Pedestrian Detection

    Pedestrian classifiers decide which image windows contain a pedestrian. In practice, such classifiers provide a relatively high response at neighbor windows overlapping a pedestrian, while the responses around potential false positives are expected to be lower. An analogous reasoning applies for image sequences. If there is a pedestrian located within a frame, the same pedestrian is expected to appear close to the same location in neighbor frames. Therefore, such a location has chances of receiving high classification scores during several frames, while false positives are expected to be more spurious. In this paper we propose to exploit such correlations for improving the accuracy of base pedestrian classifiers. In particular, we propose to use two-stage classifiers which not only rely on the image descriptors required by the base classifiers but also on the response of such base classifiers in a given spatiotemporal neighborhood. More specifically, we train pedestrian classifiers using a stacked sequential learning (SSL) paradigm. We use a new pedestrian dataset we have acquired from a car to evaluate our proposal at different frame rates. We also test on a well known dataset: Caltech. The obtained results show that our SSL proposal boosts detection accuracy significantly with a minimal impact on the computational cost.     Efficiently learning a detection cascade with sparse eigenvectors

    Real-time object detection has many computer vision applications. Since Viola and Jones proposed the first real-time AdaBoost based face detection system, much effort has been spent on improving the boosting method. In this work, we first show that feature selection methods other than boosting can also be used for training an efficient object detector. In particular, we introduce greedy sparse linear discriminant analysis (GSLDA) for its conceptual simplicity and computational efficiency; and slightly better detection performance is achieved compared with. Moreover, we propose a new technique, termed boosted greedy sparse linear discriminant analysis (BGSLDA), to efficiently train a detection cascade. BGSLDA exploits the sample reweighting property of boosting and the class-separability criterion of GSLDA. Experiments in the domain of highly skewed data distributions (e.g., face detection) demonstrate that classifiers trained with the proposed BGSLDA outperforms AdaBoost and its variants. This finding provides a significant opportunity to argue that AdaBoost and similar approaches are not the only methods that can achieve high detection results for real-time object detection

    International audiencein recent years, the number of people killed on roads has increased enormously, several pedestrian detection techniques in monocular images have been proposed to address this problem. We present our pedestrian protection system from moving vehicles using video cameras installed on the vehicle, this system combines pedestrian detection, trajectory estimation, risk evaluation, and driver alert. First, we focus on the pedestrian recognition task. Different combinations of image descriptors and classification methods have been evaluated on this task. Experiments are performed on a dataset captured on-board a vehicle driving through urban environments. Results show that the best model is HOG&RbfSVM
