The Meaning of Earth Dwellers and the Book of Revelation

Revelation 3:10 is rightly know as a passage that supports the pre-trib rapture doctrine, but the second half of the verse introduces us to the first use of the term “earth dwellers.” “Because you have kept the word of My perseverance, I also will keep you from the hour of testing, that hour which is about to come upon the whole world, to test those who dwell upon the earth.” 3:10 is the first use in Revelation of a phrase I call “earth dwellers” but usually translated “those who dwell upon the earth.” This phrase is used eleven times in nine verses in Revelation (3:10; 6:10; 8:13; 11:10 2xs; 13:8, 12, 14 2xs; 14:6; 17:8). A preliminary working definition is that “earth dwellers” is a designation for persistent unbelievers during the tribulation

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay\u27s first paragraph. Have you ever thought about how the Book of Revelation came to be included into the New Testament canon? It may not seem like that big of a deal, but when we take a closer look throughout history we see that it gained entrance over numerous other apocalypses. This is especially critical for the type of book that it is, as it concerns the end of the world and the fate of humanity

If you’re a student, teacher, or leader in your faith community and take the discipline of biblical studies and hermeneutics seriously, Wess Daniels’ commentary, Resisting Empire: The Book of Revelation, is a must-read. Knowing how to responsibly answer earnest questions about apocalyptic New Testament literature can be a daunting task, particularly when it comes to the Revelation of John of Patmos. Questions such as, “What is the book of Revelation actually about?” or, “What relevance does Revelation have for today?” need to be handled in an informed manner and not merely dismissed. However, knowing where to begin can itself be discouraging, as there are varieties of interpretations and approaches to this capstone section of the Christian Bible. It is unfortunate how this work historically has been marinated in misunderstanding and used to perpetuate spiritual misguidance, most widely within dispensational Christianity. It is clear that if the book of Revelation is to be taught responsibly, having a contextualized, informed, and balanced approach is of paramount importance

Who is worthy to open the book . . . or to look into it? . . . Worthy is the Lamb! (5:2, 3, 12). Revelation is an Apokavluyij Ihsou\u27 Cristou (1:1), and without the guiding and illuminating presence of His Holy Spirit our minds remain darkened and confused by this book; we tend to read our own meanings into it rather than being impacted by what God is saying to us through it. Nothing requires a deeper level of spiritual maturity than the exegetical study of God\u27s Word. Nothing enhances our spiritual maturity more consistently than the exegetical study of God\u27s Word. This symbiotic reality is the primary dynamic of biblical exegesis. All teaching and learning, in the Christian and biblical perspective, must be directly related to a personal and growing relationship with Jesus as Lord. It is my prayerful intention to be all the Lord purposes for me to be in guiding this class; it is my prayerful expectation that you will allow the Lord so to guide your study and participation that God\u27s full purpose for you might be fulfilled in this course, that together we might hear what the Spirit is saying to the churches.https://place.asburyseminary.edu/syllabi/1332/thumbnail.jp
