Media Literacy Curriculum for the Adolescent Young Adult Classroom

The American public education system has been lagging behind other developed nations in its implementation of media literacy curricula throughout all grade levels. As mass media outlets (including television, film, magazines, advertisements, and video games) become more prevalent in our society, the accompanying job market and the everyday use of electronic media platforms require high school and college graduates to have at least a basic understanding of how media can be used to disseminate information and to buy and sell products. Moreover, research studies in the field suggest that exposure to popular culture mass media can greatly influence teens’ self-esteem, body image, and behaviors. Learning critical thinking skills and applying these skills to different media messages is shown to help decrease some of these undesirable implications for youth. I argue that media literacy curricula should be incorporated into more American public school districts and that individual educators need to spearhead the movement. I then offer a sample media literacy curriculum that focuses specifically on representations of gender (a continuum of masculinity and femininity) in order to teach critical thinking skills necessary for the deconstruction of media messages

Undergraduate Women\u27s Self-Reported Body Image After Exposure to Weight-Related versus Nonweight-Related Media Images

The proposed study aims to determine whether there is a relationship between exposure to weight-related media images and self-reported body image. About 60 undergraduate women at Bowling Green State University will participate in the study. Half of these women will view five weight-related media images and the other half will view five nonweight-related media images. After exposure to either the experimental or control condition, the women will be asked to complete the Body Ideals Questionnaire as well as reveal their age, year in school, race/ethnicity, and number of women’s studies courses taken on a survey. Correlational data will be obtained from the survey and questionnaire. It is hypothesized that women exposed to the weight-related media images will report higher scores on the Body Ideals Questionnaire, indicating high importance placed on various features of their body along with a large difference between that part of their body and their ideal image of that feature. It is also hypothesized that Caucasian women will report higher BIQ scores than women of color, younger women will report higher BIQ scores than older women, and women exposed to more education about media effects on women (i.e. more women’s studies courses) will report lower scores on the BIQ

The purpose of this study is to add to the small body of research on the relationship between locus of control and media influence on body self-satisfaction in late adolescent males. The subjects used in this study were 151 male students enrolled in undergraduate classes at a major research university in the Midwest during the 2008 fall semester. The ages ranged from 18 to 23, with 88.1% of the respondents being between the ages of 18 and 20. All respondents were to provide demographic information on their age, sex, weight, height, year in school, and approximate daily interaction (in hours) with selected mass media (cf. television, movies, magazines, newspaper, and internet). The respondents also completed Rotter’s 29-item (I-E) Locus of Control scale (1966), the Body Image and Body Change Inventory (Ricciardelli & McCabe, 2001) and the Perceived Sociocultural Influences on Body Image and Body Change Questionnaire Media Influence Subscale (McCabe & Ricciardelli, 2001). The study found a positive relationship between the total media’s influence and body image importance. The results demonstrated that in late adolescence, there is a relationship between the chosen media and the appearance of their body, weight, and size and strength of muscles. In addition, the study discovered that externally controlled late adolescent males are more likely to place importance on the appearance of their body, weight, and muscle size and strength than do internally controlled late adolescent males.Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in the school of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation Indiana University December 200

Background: Adolescents begin to have eating autonomy which causes changes in behavior and habits related to food selection. Various factors are considered to be able to influence food choice motives. Objective: The study aimed to determine factors related to adolescents' food choice motives. Methods: A cross-sectional study involving 121 students who studied at two state Junior High schools in Yogyakarta Special District (YSD) from April to May 2020. The independent variables are gender, perception of body image, nutritional knowledge, peer influence, school location, amount of pocket money, family income, parental education, and media influence. The dependent variables are nine food choice motives. Data collection was used online questionnaires via an online form. The data were analyzed by using multiple linear regression. Results: Most respondents had health motive as their primary motive in food choice, followed by natural content, price, and ethical concern. This research also found that there was a relationship between nutritional knowledge with a natural content motive; media influence, nutritional knowledge, and amount of pocket money with ethical concern motive; parental education with price motive; perception of body image, media influence, amount of pocket money, and nutritional knowledge with weight control motive (p<0,05). Conclusions: Perception of body image, nutritional knowledge, media influence, amount of pocket money, and parental education were related to the food choice motives of adolescents. Future intervention strategies related to healthy eating behavior in adolescents can be designed based on these factors.* Presented at the International Nutrition and Health Symposium (INHESION) on Sunday, November 15th, 2020, in Yogyakarta, organized by HIMAGIKA and the Department of Health Nutrition, Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing, Universitas Gadjah Mad
