Blockchain-based Electronic Patient Records for Regulated Circular Healthcare Jurisdictions
Circular, data-driven healthcare is
increasingly being considered as an effective model to
provide efficient, cost-effective and sustainable
healthcare services in the future. Central to this model
is the service-dominant “building-block”-type provision
of care services to patients, paired with the
collaboration of healthcare providers through a
common infrastructure. This combination enables the
forming of a decentralized, holistic care cycle. Sharing
of patient medical information is pivotal towards
reaching this goal; however, preserving medical record
integrity and privacy, while at the same time allowing
provider interoperability are often conflicting
requirements. Blockchains and Smart Contracts can
provide the underlying technology to support the
decentralized care cycle by addressing patient privacy
and medical record integrity, while simultaneously
offering efficient interoperability between providers. To
demonstrate how this could be achieved, a conceptual
medical record access and sharing mechanism is
presented which is suitable for a system operating
within a regulated healthcare jurisdiction
Data interoperability and privacy schemes in healthcare data using Blockchain technology
Abstract. Electronic Health/Medical Records (EHR/EMR) lay the foundation for securely maintaining medical records. The traditional EHR systems are not effectively managed data manipulation, delayed communication, trustless data storage, data cooperation, and distribution.
Blockchain technology can play a major role in healthcare cases. This is because it uses decentralized distributed ledgers to securely manage all parties within the network. It also handles individual data through smart contracts, which can be pre-programmed by the patient for access and maintenance of healthcare data.
This thesis focuses on exploring the blockchain in digital healthcare services such as Electronic Health/Medical Records (EHR/EMR). Blockchain-based implementations of Ethereum allow patients to store their medical data with smart contracts that can perform activities such as Registration, Data Append, and Data Retrieve. The challenges faced during the implementation of blockchain protocols are discussed and analyzed in the scope of finding sustainable solutions to develop secure and reliable operation
Analyzing the Prospects of Blockchain in Healthcare Industry
Deployment of a secured healthcare information is a major challenge in a web based environment. Ehealth services are subjected to same security threats as other services. The purpose of blockchain is to provide a structure and security to the organization data. Healthcare data deals with confidential information. The medical records can be well organized and empower their propagation in a secured manner through the usage of blockchain technology. The study throws light on providing security of health services through blockchain technology. The authors have analysed the various aspects of role of blockchain in healthcare through an extensive literature review. The application of blockchain in covid-19 has also been analysed and discussed in the study. Further application of blockchain in Indian healthcare has been highlighted in the paper. The study provides suggestions for strengthening the healthcare system by blending machine learning, artificial intelligence, big data, IoT with blockchain
