Blind MultiChannel Identification and Equalization for Dereverberation and Noise Reduction based on Convolutive Transfer Function
This paper addresses the problems of blind channel identification and
multichannel equalization for speech dereverberation and noise reduction. The
time-domain cross-relation method is not suitable for blind room impulse
response identification, due to the near-common zeros of the long impulse
responses. We extend the cross-relation method to the short-time Fourier
transform (STFT) domain, in which the time-domain impulse responses are
approximately represented by the convolutive transfer functions (CTFs) with
much less coefficients. The CTFs suffer from the common zeros caused by the
oversampled STFT. We propose to identify CTFs based on the STFT with the
oversampled signals and the critical sampled CTFs, which is a good compromise
between the frequency aliasing of the signals and the common zeros problem of
CTFs. In addition, a normalization of the CTFs is proposed to remove the gain
ambiguity across sub-bands. In the STFT domain, the identified CTFs is used for
multichannel equalization, in which the sparsity of speech signals is
exploited. We propose to perform inverse filtering by minimizing the
-norm of the source signal with the relaxed -norm fitting error
between the micophone signals and the convolution of the estimated source
signal and the CTFs used as a constraint. This method is advantageous in that
the noise can be reduced by relaxing the -norm to a tolerance
corresponding to the noise power, and the tolerance can be automatically set.
The experiments confirm the efficiency of the proposed method even under
conditions with high reverberation levels and intense noise.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, 5 table
Redundancy in block coded modulations for channel equalization based on spatial and temporal diversity
Linear block codes in the complex field can be applied in spatial and/or temporal diversity receivers in order to develop high performance schemes for (almost-) blind equalization in mobile communications. The proposed technique uses the structure of the encoded transmitted information (with redundancy) to achieve equalization schemes based on a deterministic criterion. Simulations show that the proposed technique is more efficient than other schemes that follow similar equalizer structures. The result is an algorithm that provides the design of channel equalizers in low EbNo scenarios.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
Joint optimization of transceivers with fractionally spaced equalizers
In this paper we propose a method for joint optimization of transceivers with fractionally spaced equalization (FSE). We use the effective single-input multiple-output (SIMO) model for the fractionally spaced receiver. Since the FSE is used at the receiver, the optimized precoding scheme should be changed correspondingly. Simulation shows that the proposed method demonstrates remarkable improvement for jointly optimal linear transceivers as well as transceivers with decision feedback
Diversity in mobile communications for blind detection of block-coded modulations
Spatial, temporal, and frequency diversity structures are analyzed to address the blind equalization problem in the presence of time-variant frequency selective channels. The aim of the paper is to present equalization schemes useful in front of fast changing channel responses. The best solution is a deterministic blind criterion that allows direct channel equalization and symbol detection. The main contribution of this paper is to present deterministic blind equalization schemes in CDMA systems (frequency diversity) to reduce the impact of the time-variant frequency selective channel.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
Preprint: Using RF-DNA Fingerprints To Classify OFDM Transmitters Under Rayleigh Fading Conditions
The Internet of Things (IoT) is a collection of Internet connected devices
capable of interacting with the physical world and computer systems. It is
estimated that the IoT will consist of approximately fifty billion devices by
the year 2020. In addition to the sheer numbers, the need for IoT security is
exacerbated by the fact that many of the edge devices employ weak to no
encryption of the communication link. It has been estimated that almost 70% of
IoT devices use no form of encryption. Previous research has suggested the use
of Specific Emitter Identification (SEI), a physical layer technique, as a
means of augmenting bit-level security mechanism such as encryption. The work
presented here integrates a Nelder-Mead based approach for estimating the
Rayleigh fading channel coefficients prior to the SEI approach known as RF-DNA
fingerprinting. The performance of this estimator is assessed for degrading
signal-to-noise ratio and compared with least square and minimum mean squared
error channel estimators. Additionally, this work presents classification
results using RF-DNA fingerprints that were extracted from received signals
that have undergone Rayleigh fading channel correction using Minimum Mean
Squared Error (MMSE) equalization. This work also performs radio discrimination
using RF-DNA fingerprints generated from the normalized magnitude-squared and
phase response of Gabor coefficients as well as two classifiers. Discrimination
of four 802.11a Wi-Fi radios achieves an average percent correct classification
of 90% or better for signal-to-noise ratios of 18 and 21 dB or greater using a
Rayleigh fading channel comprised of two and five paths, respectively.Comment: 13 pages, 14 total figures/images, Currently under review by the IEEE

New Blind Block Synchronization for Transceivers Using Redundant Precoders
This paper studies the blind block synchronization problem in block transmission systems using linear redundant precoders (LRP). Two commonly used LRP systems, namely, zero padding (ZP) and cyclic prefix (CP) systems, are considered in this paper. In particular, the block synchronization problem in CP systems is a broader version of timing synchronization problem in the popular orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. The proposed algorithms exploit the rank deficiency property of the matrix composed of received blocks when the block synchronization is perfect and use a parameter called repetition index which can be chosen as any positive integer. Theoretical results suggest advantages in blind block synchronization performances when using a large repetition index. Furthermore, unlike previously reported algorithms, which require a large amount of received data, the proposed methods, with properly chosen repetition indices, guarantee correct block synchronization in absence of noise using only two received blocks in ZP systems and three in CP systems. Computer simulations are conducted to evaluate the performances of the proposed algorithms and compare them with previously reported algorithms. Simulation results not only verify the capability of the proposed algorithms to work with limited received data but also show significant improvements in the block synchronization error rate performance of the proposed algorithms over previously reported algorithms
