    Technology in the 21st Century: New Challenges and Opportunities

    Although big data, big data analytics (BDA) and business intelligence have attracted growing attention of both academics and practitioners, a lack of clarity persists about how BDA has been applied in business and management domains. In reflecting on Professor Ayre's contributions, we want to extend his ideas on technological change by incorporating the discourses around big data, BDA and business intelligence. With this in mind, we integrate the burgeoning but disjointed streams of research on big data, BDA and business intelligence to develop unified frameworks. Our review takes on both technical and managerial perspectives to explore the complex nature of big data, techniques in big data analytics and utilisation of big data in business and management community. The advanced analytics techniques appear pivotal in bridging big data and business intelligence. The study of advanced analytics techniques and their applications in big data analytics led to identification of promising avenues for future research

    Applied business analytics approach to IT projects – Methodological framework

    The design and implementation of a big data project differs from a typical business intelligence project that might be presented concurrently within the same organization. A big data initiative typically triggers a large scale IT project that is expected to deliver the desired outcomes. The industry has identified two major methodologies for running a data centric project, in particular SEMMA (Sample, Explore, Modify, Model and Assess) and CRISP-DM (Cross Industry Standard Process for Data Mining). More general, the professional organizations PMI (Project Management Institute) and IIBA (International Institute of Business Analysis) have defined their methods for project management and business analysis based on the best current industry practices. However, big data projects place new challenges that are not considered by the existing methodologies. The building of end-to-end big data analytical solution for optimization of the supply chain, pricing and promotion, product launch, shop potential and customer value is facing both business and technical challenges. The most common business challenges are unclear and/or poorly defined business cases; irrelevant data; poor data quality; overlooked data granularity; improper contextualization of data; unprepared or bad prepared data; non-meaningful results; lack of skill set. Some of the technical challenges are related to lag of resources and technology limitations; availability of data sources; storage difficulties; security issues; performance problems; little flexibility; and ineffective DevOps. This paper discusses an applied business analytics approach to IT projects and addresses the above-described aspects. The authors present their work on research and development of new methodological framework and analytical instruments applicable in both business endeavors, and educational initiatives, targeting big data. The proposed framework is based on proprietary methodology and advanced analytics tools. It is focused on the development and the implementation of practical solutions for project managers, business analysts, IT practitioners and Business/Data Analytics students. Under discussion are also the necessary skills and knowledge for the successful big data business analyst, and some of the main organizational and operational aspects of the big data projects, including the continuous model deployment

    Review of modern business intelligence and analytics in 2015: How to tame the big data in practice?: Case study - What kind of modern business intelligence and analytics strategy to choose?

    The objective of this study was to find out the state of art architecture of modern business intelligence and analytics. Furthermore the status quo of business intelligence and analytics' architecture in an anonymous case company was examined. Based on these findings a future strategy was designed to guide the case company towards a better business intelligence and analytics environment. This objective was selected due to an increasing interest on big data topic. Thus the understanding on how to move on from traditional business intelligence practices to modern ones and what are the available options were seen as the key questions to be solved in order to gain competitive advantage for any company in near future. The study was conducted as a qualitative single-case study. The case study included two parts: an analytics maturity assessment, and an analysis of business intelligence and analytics' architecture. The survey included over 30 questions and was sent to 25 analysts and other individuals who were using a significant time to deal with or read financial reports like for example managers. The architecture analysis was conducted by gathering relevant information on high level. Furthermore a big picture was drawn to illustrate the architecture. The two parts combined were used to construct the actual current maturity level of business intelligence and analytics in the case company. Three theoretical frameworks were used: first framework regarding the architecture, second framework regarding the maturity level and third framework regarding reporting tools. The first higher level framework consisted of the modern data warehouse architecture and Hadoop solution from D'Antoni and Lopez (2014). The second framework included the analytics maturity assessment from the data warehouse institute (2015). Finally the third framework analyzed the advanced analytics tools from Sallam et al. (2015). The findings of this study suggest that modern business intelligence and analytics solution can include both data warehouse and Hadoop components. These two components are not mutually exclusive. Instead Hadoop is actually augmenting data warehouse to another level. This thesis shows how companies can evaluate their current maturity level and design a future strategy by benchmarking their own actions against the state of art solution. To keep up with the fast pace of development, research must be continuous. Therefore in future for example a study regarding a detailed path of implementing Hadoop would be a great addition to this field

    Combining Big Data And Traditional Business Intelligence – A Framework For A Hybrid Data-Driven Decision Support System

    Since the emergence of big data, traditional business intelligence systems have been unable to meet most of the information demands in many data-driven organisations. Nowadays, big data analytics is perceived to be the solution to the challenges related to information processing of big data and decision-making of most data-driven organisations. Irrespective of the promised benefits of big data, organisations find it difficult to prove and realise the value of the investment required to develop and maintain big data analytics. The reality of big data is more complex than many organisations’ perceptions of big data. Most organisations have failed to implement big data analytics successfully, and some organisations that have implemented these systems are struggling to attain the average promised value of big data. Organisations have realised that it is impractical to migrate the entire traditional business intelligence (BI) system into big data analytics and there is a need to integrate these two types of systems. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate a framework for creating a hybrid data-driven decision support system that combines components from traditional business intelligence and big data analytics systems. The study employed an interpretive qualitative research methodology to investigate research participants' understanding of the concepts related to big data, a data-driven organisation, business intelligence, and other data analytics perceptions. Semi-structured interviews were held to collect research data and thematic data analysis was used to understand the research participants’ feedback information based on their background knowledge and experiences. The application of the organisational information processing theory (OIPT) and the fit viability model (FVM) guided the interpretation of the study outcomes and the development of the proposed framework. The findings of the study suggested that data-driven organisations collect data from different data sources and process these data to transform them into information with the goal of using the information as a base of all their business decisions. Executive and senior management roles in the adoption of a data-driven decision-making culture are key to the success of the organisation. BI and big data analytics are tools and software systems that are used to assist a data-driven organisation in transforming data into information and knowledge. The suggested challenges that organisations experience when they are trying to integrate BI and big data analytics were used to guide the development of the framework that can be used to create a hybrid data-driven decision support system. The framework is divided into these elements: business motivation, information requirements, supporting mechanisms, data attributes, supporting processes and hybrid data-driven decision support system architecture. The proposed framework is created to assist data-driven organisations in assessing the components of both business intelligence and big data analytics systems and make a case-by-case decision on which components can be used to satisfy the specific data requirements of an organisation.     A Tutorial on Using Qlik Analytics Platform for Business Analytics

    Business Analytics focuses on how businesses, non-profits, and governments use data to gain insights and improve organizational decision-making skills. Due to an increasing availability of large data sets from a variety of sources (Big Data), employees with business analytic skills are in-demand in many industries throughout the world. There are numerous analytics platforms that can be brought into the classroom to introduce students to business analytics concepts. The goal of this tutorial is to familiarize the audience with key aspects of using the Qlik (pronounced Click ) analytics platform - one of the leading commercial business analytics tools on the market according to Gartner\u27s 2018 Magic Quadrant for analytics and business intelligence platforms (Howson, Sallam, & Richa, 2018). The tutorial will be organized into 3 parts: (1) discussion of pros and cons of the top 3 business intelligence platforms - Microsoft\u27s Power BI, Tableau, and Qlik, (2) brief introduction to Qlik and a quick review of its functionality, and (3) a hands-on walk through of an exemplar class project using simple linear regression on healthcare insurance data.     A survey on context awareness in big data analytics for business applications

    The concept of context awareness has been in existence since the 1990s. Though initially applied exclusively in computer science, over time it has increasingly been adopted by many different application domains such as business, health and military. Contexts change continuously because of objective reasons, such as economic situation, political matter and social issues. The adoption of big data analytics by businesses is facilitating such change at an even faster rate in much complicated ways. The potential benefits of embedding contextual information into an application are already evidenced by the improved outcomes of the existing context-aware methods in those applications. Since big data is growing very rapidly, context awareness in big data analytics has become more important and timely because of its proven efficiency in big data understanding and preparation, contributing to extracting the more and accurate value of big data. Many surveys have been published on context-based methods such as context modelling and reasoning, workflow adaptations, computational intelligence techniques and mobile ubiquitous systems. However, to our knowledge, no survey of context-aware methods on big data analytics for business applications supported by enterprise level software has been published to date. To bridge this research gap, in this paper first, we present a definition of context, its modelling and evaluation techniques, and highlight the importance of contextual information for big data analytics. Second, the works in three key business application areas that are context-aware and/or exploit big data analytics have been thoroughly reviewed. Finally, the paper concludes by highlighting a number of contemporary research challenges, including issues concerning modelling, managing and applying business contexts to big data analytics. © 2020, Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature

    IS Programs Responding to Industry Demands for Data Scientists: A Comparison Between 2011-2016

    The term data scientist has only been in common use since 2008, but in 2016 it is considered one of the top careers in the United States. The purpose of this paper is to explore the growth of data science content areas such as analytics, business intelligence, and big data in AACSB Information Systems (IS) programs between 2011 and 2016. A secondary purpose is to analyze the effect of IS programs’ adherence to IS 2010 Model Curriculum Guidelines for undergraduate MIS programs, as well as the impact of IS programs offering an advanced database course in 2011 on data science course offerings in 2016. A majority (60%) of AACSB IS programs added data science-related courses between 2011 and 2016. Results indicate dramatic increases in courses offered in big data analytics (583%), visualization (300%), business data analysis (260%), and business intelligence (236%). ANOVA results also find a significant effect of departments offering advanced database courses in 2011 on new analytics course offerings in 2016. A Chi-Square analysis did not find an effect of IS 2010 Model Curriculum adherence on analytics course offerings in 2016. Implications of our findings for an MIS department’s ability to respond to changing needs of the marketplace and its students are discussed
