An approach for reliability-based robust design optimisation of angle-ply composites
Variations of manufacturing process parameters and environmental aspects may affect the quality and performance of composite materials, which consequently affects their structural behaviour. Reliability-based design optimisation (RBDO) and robust design optimisation (RDO) searches for safe structural systems with minimal variability of response when subjected to uncertainties in material design parameters. An approach that simultaneously considers reliability and robustness is proposed in this paper. Depending on a given reliability index imposed on composite structures, a trade-off is established between the performance targets and robustness. Robustness is expressed in terms of the coefficient of variation of the constrained structural response weighted by its nominal value. The Pareto normed front is built and the nearest point to the origin is estimated as the best solution of the bi-objective optimisation problem
Evolutionary design of a fullâenvelope flight control system for an unstable fighter aircraft
The use of an evolutionary algorithm in the framework of Hâ control theory is being considered as a means for synthesizing controller gains that minimize a weighted combination of the infinite-norm of the sensitivity function (for disturbance attenuation requirements) and complementary sensitivity function (for robust stability requirements) at the same time. The case study deals with the stability and control augmentation of an unstable high-performance jet aircraft. Constraints on closed-loop response are also enforced, that represent typical requirements on airplane handling qualities, that makes the control law synthesis process more demanding. Gain scheduling is required, in order to obtain satisfactory performance over the whole flight envelope, so that the synthesis is performed at different reference trim conditions, for several values of the dynamic pressure, Q, used as the scheduling parameter. Nonetheless, the dynamic behaviour of the aircraft may exhibit significant variations when flying at different altitudes h, even for the same value of the dynamic pressure, so that a trade-off is required between different feasible controllers synthesized for a given value of Q, but different h. A multi-objective search is thus considered for the determination of the best suited solution to be introduced in the scheduling of the control law. The obtained results are then tested on a longitudinal nonlinear model of the aircraft

Insurance with multiple insurers: A game-theoretic approach
This paper studies the set of Pareto optimal insurance contracts and the core of an insurance game. Our setting allows multiple insurers with translation invariant preferences. We characterise the Pareto optimal contracts, which determines the shape of the indemnities. Closed-form and numerical solutions are found for various preferences that the insurance players might have. Determining associated premiums with any given optimal Pareto contract is another problem for which economic-based arguments are further discussed. We also explain how one may link the recent fast growing literature on risk-based optimality criteria to the Pareto optimality criterion and we show that the latter is much more general than the former one, which according to our knowledge, has not been pointed out by now. Further, we extend some of our results when model risk is included, i.e. there is some uncertainty with the risk model and/or the insurance players make decisions based on divergent beliefs about the underlying risk. These robust optimal contracts are investigated and we show how one may find robust and Pareto efficient contracts, which is a key decision-making problem under uncertainty
Predictive Control of Autonomous Kites in Tow Test Experiments
In this paper we present a model-based control approach for autonomous flight
of kites for wind power generation. Predictive models are considered to
compensate for delay in the kite dynamics. We apply Model Predictive Control
(MPC), with the objective of guiding the kite to follow a figure-of-eight
trajectory, in the outer loop of a two level control cascade. The tracking
capabilities of the inner-loop controller depend on the operating conditions
and are assessed via a frequency domain robustness analysis. We take the
limitations of the inner tracking controller into account by encoding them as
optimisation constraints in the outer MPC. The method is validated on a kite
system in tow test experiments.Comment: The paper has been accepted for publication in the IEEE Control

Certainty Closure: Reliable Constraint Reasoning with Incomplete or Erroneous Data
Constraint Programming (CP) has proved an effective paradigm to model and
solve difficult combinatorial satisfaction and optimisation problems from
disparate domains. Many such problems arising from the commercial world are
permeated by data uncertainty. Existing CP approaches that accommodate
uncertainty are less suited to uncertainty arising due to incomplete and
erroneous data, because they do not build reliable models and solutions
guaranteed to address the user's genuine problem as she perceives it. Other
fields such as reliable computation offer combinations of models and associated
methods to handle these types of uncertain data, but lack an expressive
framework characterising the resolution methodology independently of the model.
We present a unifying framework that extends the CP formalism in both model
and solutions, to tackle ill-defined combinatorial problems with incomplete or
erroneous data. The certainty closure framework brings together modelling and
solving methodologies from different fields into the CP paradigm to provide
reliable and efficient approches for uncertain constraint problems. We
demonstrate the applicability of the framework on a case study in network
diagnosis. We define resolution forms that give generic templates, and their
associated operational semantics, to derive practical solution methods for
reliable solutions.Comment: Revised versio
Robust control of room temperature and relative humidity using advanced nonlinear inverse dynamics and evolutionary optimisation
A robust controller is developed, using advanced nonlinear inverse dynamics (NID) controller design and genetic algorithm optimisation, for room temperature control. The performance is evaluated through application to a single zone dynamic building model. The proposed controller produces superior performance when compared to the NID controller optimised with a simple optimisation algorithm, and classical PID control commonly used in the buildings industry. An improved level of thermal comfort is achieved, due to fast and accurate tracking of the setpoints, and energy consumption is shown to be reduced, which in turn means carbon emissions are reduced
