Managing technological change in a military treatment facility: a case study of medical diagnostic imaging support (MDIS) system

    Get PDF
Picture archiving and communication system (PACS) represents an enormously expensive technological innovation in digital imaging which has the potential to alter the way in which radiology is practiced. The purpose of this thesis is to provide a better understanding of the requirements for PACS technology and the implementation of information systems in medical facilities. The objective of PACS technology is to improve access to radiographic images and reports throughout medical facilities while decreasing the cost of image production and storage. Medical Diagnostic Imaging Support (MDIS) system is the military tri-service project to install PACS in selected U.S. military medical treatment facilities (MTF) in an attempt to create a totally filmless environment. This thesis includes a case study of the implementation of the MDIS system at Madigan Army Medical Center and the change management issues that surround the introduction of an information system in a health care organization. The issues brought forth in this study are derived from two change models in the implementation of information systems.http://archive.org/details/managingtechnolo1094542869U.S. Navy (USN) authorApproved for public release; distribution is unlimited

Digital imaging technology assessment: Digital document storage project

    Get PDF
An ongoing technical assessment and requirements definition project is examining the potential role of digital imaging technology at NASA's STI facility. The focus is on the basic components of imaging technology in today's marketplace as well as the components anticipated in the near future. Presented is a requirement specification for a prototype project, an initial examination of current image processing at the STI facility, and an initial summary of image processing projects at other sites. Operational imaging systems incorporate scanners, optical storage, high resolution monitors, processing nodes, magnetic storage, jukeboxes, specialized boards, optical character recognition gear, pixel addressable printers, communications, and complex software processes

This essay reviews recent developments in embedding data management and curation skills into information technology, library and information science, and research-based postgraduate courses in various national contexts. The essay also investigates means of joining up formal education with professional development training opportunities more coherently. The potential for using professional internships as a means of improving communication and understanding between disciplines is also explored. A key aim of this essay is to identify what level of complementarity is needed across various disciplines to most effectively and efficiently support the entire data curation lifecycle

Towards the establishment and implementation of an institutional repository at the University of Cape Town (UCT): a case study

    Get PDF
Includes abstract.Includes bibliographical references. The concepts of open access and scholarly publishing are still gaining momentum in Africa, especially South Africa. Increasingly, institutional repositories are being planned and developed by universities throughout the world especially in the first world countries, which have taken the lead. Institutional repositories have developed because of changes in scholarly communication where journal prices are high and libraries are finding it difficult to subscribe to them. Communication technology in the form of the internet brought a solution to the problem. Researchers, authors and libraries now advocate for the open access model of scholarly communication. This study explores the developments associated with the establishment and implementation of an Institutional Repository at UCT
