    Cross-talk statistics and impact in interferometric GNSS-R

Crosstalk occurs when the Delay-Doppler Map (DDM) of a tracked satellite overlaps others fromundesired satellites. This study is performed for ground-based and airborne receivers and for a receiver onboard the International Space Station (ISS) such as the upcoming GNSS Reflectometry, Radio Occultation and Scatterometry onboard ISS experiment. Its impact on ocean altimetry retrievals is analyzed for different antenna arrays. Results show that for elevation angles higher than 60 degrees, crosstalk can be almost permanent from ground, up to 61% from airborne receivers at 2-km height, and up to similar to 10% at the ISS. Crosstalk can only be mitigated using highly directive antennas with narrow beamwidths. Crosstalk impact using a seven-element hexagonal array still induces large errors on ground, but reduces to centimeter level on airborne receivers, and is negligible from the ISS.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

    Medium Earth Orbit dynamical survey and its use in passive debris removal

    The Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) region hosts satellites for navigation, communication, and geodetic/space environmental science, among which are the Global Navigation Satellites Systems (GNSS). Safe and efficient removal of debris from MEO is problematic due to the high cost for maneuvers needed to directly reach the Earth (reentry orbits) and the relatively crowded GNSS neighborhood (graveyard orbits). Recent studies have highlighted the complicated secular dynamics in the MEO region, but also the possibility of exploiting these dynamics, for designing removal strategies. In this paper, we present our numerical exploration of the long-term dynamics in MEO, performed with the purpose of unveiling the set of reentry and graveyard solutions that could be reached with maneuvers of reasonable DV cost. We simulated the dynamics over 120-200 years for an extended grid of millions of fictitious MEO satellites that covered all inclinations from 0 to 90deg, using non-averaged equations of motion and a suitable dynamical model that accounted for the principal geopotential terms, 3rd-body perturbations and solar radiation pressure (SRP). We found a sizeable set of usable solutions with reentry times that exceed ~40years, mainly around three specific inclination values: 46deg, 56deg, and 68deg; a result compatible with our understanding of MEO secular dynamics. For DV <= 300 m/s (i.e., achieved if you start from a typical GNSS orbit and target a disposal orbit with e<0.3), reentry times from GNSS altitudes exceed ~70 years, while low-cost (DV ~= 5-35 m/s) graveyard orbits, stable for at lest 200 years, are found for eccentricities up to e~0.018.     Ambiguity resolution performance with GPS and BeiDou for LEO formation flying

    The evolving BeiDou Navigation Satellite System constellation brings new opportunities for high-precision applications. In this contribution the focus will be on one such application, namely precise and instantaneous relative navigation of a formation of LEO satellites. The aim is to assess the ambiguity resolution performance with the future GPS and BeiDou constellations depending on system choice (GPS, BeiDou, or GPS+BeiDou), single- or dual-frequency observations, receiver noise, and uncertainties in ionosphere modelling. In addition, for the GPS+BeiDou constellation it will be shown how the growing BeiDou constellation in the years to come can already bring an important performance improvement compared to the GPS-only case. The performance will be assessed based on the percentage of time that the required precision can be obtained with a partial ambiguity resolution strategy

    Helmert Variance Component Estimation for Multi-GNSS Relative Positioning

    The Multi-constellation Global Navigation Satellite System (Multi-GNSS) has become the standard implementation of high accuracy positioning and navigation applications. It is well known that the noise of code and phase measurements depend on GNSS constellation. Then, Helmert variance component estimation (HVCE) is usually used to adjust the contributions of di¿erent GNSS constellations by determining their individual variances of unit weight. However, HVCE requires a heavy computation load. In this study, the HVCE posterior weighting was employed to carry out a kinematic relative Multi-GNSS positioning experiment with six short-baselines from day of year (DoY) 171 to 200 in 2019. As a result, the HVCE posterior weighting strategy improved Multi-GNSS positioning accuracy by 20.5%, 15.7% and 13.2% ineast-north-up(ENU) components, compared to an elevation-dependent (ED) priori weighting strategy. We observed that the weight proportion of both code and phase observations for each GNSS constellation were consistent during the entire 30 days, which indicates that the weight proportions of both code and phase observations are stable over a long period of time. It was also found that the quality of a phase observation is almost equivalent in each baseline and GNSS constellation, whereas that of a code observation is different. In order to reduce the time consumption off the HVCE method without sacrificing positioning accuracy, the stable variances of unit weights of both phase and code observations obtained over 30 days were averaged and then frozen as a priori information in the positioning experiment. The result demonstrated similar ENU improvements of 20.0%, 14.1% and 11.1% with respect to the ED method but saving 88% of the computation time of the HCVE strategy. Our study concludes with the observations that the frozen variances of unit weight (FVUW) could be applied to the positioning experiment for the next 30 days, that is, from DoY 201 to 230 in 2019, improving the positioning ENU accuracy of the ED method by 18.1%, 13.2% and 10.6%, indicating the effectiveness of the FVUW.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

The spectral separation coefficient (SSC) is the standard figure of merit to evaluate the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) degradation due to the RFI. However, an in-depth assessment in the field of GNSS-Reflectometry (GNSS-R) has not been performed yet, and particularly, about which is the influence of the RFI on the so-called delay-Doppler map (DDM). This paper develops a model that evaluates the contribution of intra-/inter-GNSS and external RFI effects to the degradation of the SNR in the DDM for both conventional and interferometric GNSS-R techniques. Moreover, a generalized SSC is defined to account for the effects of nonstationary RFI signals. The results show that highly directive antennas are necessary to avoid interference from other GNSS satellites, whereas mitigation techniques are essential to keep GNSS-R instruments working under external RFI degradation.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

    A passive satellite deorbiting strategy for MEO using solar radiation pressure and the J2 effect

    The growing population of space debris poses a serious risk to the future of space flight. To effectively manage the increase of debris in orbit, end-of life disposal has become a key requirement for future missions. This poses a challenge for Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) spacecraft which require a large Δv to re-enter the atmosphere or reach the geostationary graveyard orbit. This paper further explores a passive strategy based on the joint effects of solar radiation pressure and the Earth’s oblateness acting on a high area-to-mass ratio object. The concept was previously presented as an analytical planar model. This paper uses a full 3D model to validate the analytical results numerically for equatorial circular orbits first, then investigating higher inclinations. It is shown that for higher inclinations the initial position of the Sun and right ascension of the ascending node become increasingly important. A region of very low required area-to-mass ratio is identified in the parameter space of a and inclination which occurs for altitudes below 10,000 km

    Jamming Effect Analysis of Two Chinese GNSS BeiDou-II Civil Signals

    Threats of electronic warfare, especially to global positioning systems (GPSs), have been rapidly increasing. The development of the Chinese navigation satellite system BeiDou has been extended to a global navigation satellite system (GNSS). In December 2011, the Chinese government released a specification document—a test version of a civil BeiDou-II signal called B1(I). A strong possibility exists that BeiDou-II (Chinese GNSS) will be adopted by North Korea in the near future. Therefore, research on BeiDou-II is essential. Since BeiDou-II is a newly-built system, few jamming effect analyses of its positioning signals have been performed. Thus, in this study, we analyze quality factors (Q) and the tolerable jamming signal power among two BeiDou-II civil signals, and two GPS civil signals, in three jamming conditions: band-limited white noise (BLWN), matched spectrum (MS), and continuous wave (CW).     Characterizing Power Consumption of Dual-Frequency GNSS of a Smartphone

    Location service is one of the most widely used features on a smartphone. More and more apps are built based on location services. As such, demand for accurate positioning is ever higher. Mobile brand Xiaomi has introduced Mi 8, the world's first smartphone equipped with a dual-frequency GNSS chipset which is claimed to provide up to decimeter-level positioning accuracy. Such unprecedentedly high location accuracy brought excitement to industry and academia for navigation research and development of emerging apps. On the other hand, there is a significant knowledge gap on the energy efficiency of smartphones equipped with a dual-frequency GNSS chipset. In this paper, we bridge this knowledge gap by performing an empirical study on power consumption of a dual-frequency GNSS phone. To the best our knowledge, this is the first experimental study that characterizes the power consumption of a smartphone equipped with a dual-frequency GNSS chipset and compares the energy efficiency with a single-frequency GNSS phone. We demonstrate that a smartphone with a dual-frequency GNSS chipset consumes 37% more power on average outdoors, and 28% more power indoors, in comparison with a singe-frequency GNSS phone.Comment: Published in IEEE Global Communications Conference (GLOBECOM
