Planning Hybrid Driving-Stepping Locomotion on Multiple Levels of Abstraction
Navigating in search and rescue environments is challenging, since a variety
of terrains has to be considered. Hybrid driving-stepping locomotion, as
provided by our robot Momaro, is a promising approach. Similar to other
locomotion methods, it incorporates many degrees of freedom---offering high
flexibility but making planning computationally expensive for larger
environments.
We propose a navigation planning method, which unifies different levels of
representation in a single planner. In the vicinity of the robot, it provides
plans with a fine resolution and a high robot state dimensionality. With
increasing distance from the robot, plans become coarser and the robot state
dimensionality decreases. We compensate this loss of information by enriching
coarser representations with additional semantics. Experiments show that the
proposed planner provides plans for large, challenging scenarios in feasible

Artificial Intelligence and Systems Theory: Applied to Cooperative Robots
This paper describes an approach to the design of a population of cooperative
robots based on concepts borrowed from Systems Theory and Artificial
Intelligence. The research has been developed under the SocRob project, carried
out by the Intelligent Systems Laboratory at the Institute for Systems and
Robotics - Instituto Superior Tecnico (ISR/IST) in Lisbon. The acronym of the
project stands both for "Society of Robots" and "Soccer Robots", the case study
where we are testing our population of robots. Designing soccer robots is a
very challenging problem, where the robots must act not only to shoot a ball
towards the goal, but also to detect and avoid static (walls, stopped robots)
and dynamic (moving robots) obstacles. Furthermore, they must cooperate to
defeat an opposing team. Our past and current research in soccer robotics
includes cooperative sensor fusion for world modeling, object recognition and
tracking, robot navigation, multi-robot distributed task planning and
coordination, including cooperative reinforcement learning in cooperative and
adversarial environments, and behavior-based architectures for real time task
execution of cooperating robot teams
Fast Simulation of Vehicles with Non-deformable Tracks
This paper presents a novel technique that allows for both computationally
fast and sufficiently plausible simulation of vehicles with non-deformable
tracks. The method is based on an effect we have called Contact Surface Motion.
A comparison with several other methods for simulation of tracked vehicle
dynamics is presented with the aim to evaluate methods that are available
off-the-shelf or with minimum effort in general-purpose robotics simulators.
The proposed method is implemented as a plugin for the open-source

Assistive Planning in Complex, Dynamic Environments: a Probabilistic Approach
We explore the probabilistic foundations of shared control in complex dynamic
environments. In order to do this, we formulate shared control as a random
process and describe the joint distribution that governs its behavior. For
tractability, we model the relationships between the operator, autonomy, and
crowd as an undirected graphical model. Further, we introduce an interaction
function between the operator and the robot, that we call "agreeability"; in
combination with the methods developed in~\cite{trautman-ijrr-2015}, we extend
a cooperative collision avoidance autonomy to shared control. We therefore
quantify the notion of simultaneously optimizing over agreeability (between the
operator and autonomy), and safety and efficiency in crowded environments. We
show that for a particular form of interaction function between the autonomy
and the operator, linear blending is recovered exactly. Additionally, to
recover linear blending, unimodal restrictions must be placed on the models
describing the operator and the autonomy. In turn, these restrictions raise
questions about the flexibility and applicability of the linear blending
framework. Additionally, we present an extension of linear blending called
"operator biased linear trajectory blending" (which formalizes some recent
approaches in linear blending such as~\cite{dragan-ijrr-2013}) and show that
not only is this also a restrictive special case of our probabilistic approach,
but more importantly, is statistically unsound, and thus, mathematically,
unsuitable for implementation. Instead, we suggest a statistically principled
approach that guarantees data is used in a consistent manner, and show how this
alternative approach converges to the full probabilistic framework. We conclude
