    Reactive temporal logic

    Whereas standard treatments of temporal logic are adequate for closed systems, having no run-time interactions with their environment, they fall short for reactive systems, interacting with their environments through synchronisation of actions. This paper introduces reactive temporal logic, a form of temporal logic adapted for the study of reactive systems. I illustrate its use by applying it to formulate definitions of a fair scheduler, and of a correct mutual exclusion protocol. Previous definitions of these concepts were conceptually much more involved or less precise, leading to debates on whether or not a given protocol satisfies the implicit requirements.Comment: In Proceedings EXPRESS/SOS 2020, arXiv:2008.1241

    Modelling Mutual Exclusion in a Process Algebra with Time-outs

    I show that in a standard process algebra extended with time-outs one can correctly model mutual exclusion in such a way that starvation-freedom holds without assuming fairness or justness, even when one makes the problem more challenging by assuming memory accesses to be atomic.     Motivated by the analysis of highly dynamic message-passing systems, i.e. unbounded thread creation, mobility, etc. we present a framework for the analysis of depth-bounded systems. Depth-bounded systems are one of the most expressive known fragment of the π-calculus for which interesting verification problems are still decidable. Even though they are infinite state systems depth-bounded systems are well-structured, thus can be analyzed algorithmically. We give an interpretation of depth-bounded systems as graph-rewriting systems. This gives more flexibility and ease of use to apply depth-bounded systems to other type of systems like shared memory concurrency. First, we develop an adequate domain of limits for depth-bounded systems, a prerequisite for the effective representation of downward-closed sets. Downward-closed sets are needed by forward saturation-based algorithms to represent potentially infinite sets of states. Then, we present an abstract interpretation framework to compute the covering set of well-structured transition systems. Because, in general, the covering set is not computable, our abstraction over-approximates the actual covering set. Our abstraction captures the essence of acceleration based-algorithms while giving up enough precision to ensure convergence. We have implemented the analysis in the PICASSO tool and show that it is accurate in practice. Finally, we build some further analyses like termination using the covering set as starting point

    The thesis consists of six individual papers, where the present paper contains the mandatory overview, while the remaining five papers are found separately from the overview. The five papers can roughly be divided into three areas of research, namely case studies, education, and extensions to the CPN method.The primary purpose of the PhD thesis is to study the pragmatics, practical aspects, and intuition of CP-nets viewed as a formal method for describing and reasoning about concurrent systems. The perspective of pragmatics is our leitmotif, but at the same time in the context of CP-nets it is a kind of hypothesis of this thesis. This overview paper summarises the research conducted as an investigation of the hypothesis in the three areas of case studies, education, and extensions.The provoking claim of pragmatics should not be underestimated. In the present overview of the thesis, the CPN method is compared with a representative selection of formal methods. The graphics and simplicity of semantics, yet generality and expressiveness of the language constructs, essentially makes CP-nets a viable and attractive alternative to other formal methods. Similar graphical formal methods, such as SDL and Statecharts, typically have significantly more complicated semantics, or are domain-specific languages.research conducted in this thesis, opens a new complex of problems. Firstly, to get wider acceptance of CP-nets in industry, it is important to identify fruitful areas for the effective introduction of the CPN method. Secondly, it would be useful to identify a few extensions to the CPN method inspired by specific domains for easier adaption in industry.     Analysis of WIMP and Post WIMP Interactive Systems based on Formal Specification

    While designing interactive software, the use of a formal specification technique is of great help by providing non-ambiguous, complete and concise descriptions. The advantages of using such a formalism is widened if it is provided by formal analysis techniques that allow to prove properties about the design, thus giving an early verification to the designer before the application is actually implemented. This paper presents how models built using the Interactive Cooperative Objects formalism (ICOs) are amenable to formal verification. The emphasis is on the behavioral part of the description of the interactive systems and more precisely on the properties at the interaction technique level. However, the process and the associated tools can be generalized to the other parts of the interactive systems (including the non-interactive parts)
