Erasure Insertion in RS-Coded SFH MFSK Subjected to Tone Jamming and Rayleigh Fading
The achievable performance of Reed Solomon (RS) coded slow frequency hopping (SFH) assisted M-ary frequency shift keying (MFSK) using various erasure insertion (EI) schemes is investigated, when communicating over uncorrelated Rayleigh fading channels in the presence of multitone jamming. Three different EI schemes are considered, which are based on the output threshold test (OTT), on the ratio threshold test (RTT) and on the joint maximum output-ratio threshold test (MORTT). The relevant statistics of these EI schemes are investigated mathematically and based on these statistics, their performance is evaluated in the context of error-and-erasure RS decoding. It is demonstrated that the system performance can be significantly improved by using error-and-erasure decoding invoking the EI schemes considered. Performance Analysis of SSK-NOMA
In this paper, we consider the combination between two promising techniques:
space-shift keying (SSK) and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) for future
radio access networks. We analyze the performance of SSK-NOMA networks and
provide a comprehensive analytical framework of SSK-NOMA regarding bit error
probability (BEP), ergodic capacity and outage probability. It is worth
pointing out all analysis also stand for conventional SIMO-NOMA networks. We
derive closed-form exact average BEP (ABEP) expressions when the number of
users in a resource block is equal to i.e., . Nevertheless, we analyze the
ABEP of users when the number of users is more than i.e., , and derive
bit-error-rate (BER) union bound since the error propagation due to iterative
successive interference canceler (SIC) makes the exact analysis intractable.
Then, we analyze the achievable rate of users and derive exact ergodic capacity
of the users so the ergodic sum rate of the system in closed-forms. Moreover,
we provide the average outage probability of the users exactly in the
closed-form. All derived expressions are validated via Monte Carlo simulations
and it is proved that SSK-NOMA outperforms conventional NOMA networks in terms
of all performance metrics (i.e., BER, sum rate, outage). Finally, the effect
of the power allocation (PA) on the performance of SSK-NOMA networks is
investigated and the optimum PA is discussed under BER and outage constraints
Differential Amplify-and-Forward Relaying in Time-Varying Rayleigh Fading Channels
This paper considers the performance of differential amplify-and-forward
(D-AF) relaying over time-varying Rayleigh fading channels. Using the
auto-regressive time-series model to characterize the time-varying nature of
the wireless channels, new weights for the maximum ratio combining (MRC) of the
received signals at the destination are proposed. Expression for the pair-wise
error probability (PEP) is provided and used to obtain an approximation of the
total average bit error probability (BEP). The obtained BEP approximation
clearly shows how the system performance depends on the auto-correlation of the
direct and the cascaded channels and an irreducible error floor exists at high
signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Simulation results also demonstrate that, for
fast-fading channels, the new MRC weights lead to a better performance when
compared to the classical combining scheme. Our analysis is verified with
simulation results in different fading scenarios
Combined Soft Hard Cooperative Spectrum Sensing in Cognitive Radio Networks
Providing some techniques to enhance the performance of spectrum sensing in cognitive radio systems while accounting for the cost and bandwidth limitations in practical scenarios is the main objective of this thesis. We focus on an essential element of cooperative spectrum sensing (CSS) which is the data fusion that combines the sensing results to make the final decision. Exploiting the advantage of the superior performance of the soft schemes and the low bandwidth of the hard schemes by incorporating them in cluster based CSS networks is achieved in two different ways. First, a soft-hard combination is employed to propose a hierarchical cluster based spectrum sensing algorithm. The proposed algorithm maximizes the detection performances while satisfying the probability of false alarm constraint. Simulation results of the proposed algorithm are presented and compared with existing algorithms over the Nakagami fading channel. Moreover, the results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the existing algorithms. In the second part, a low complexity soft-hard combination scheme is suggested by utilizing both one-bit and two-bit schemes to balance between the required bandwidth and the detection performance by taking into account that different clusters undergo different conditions. The scheme allocates a reliability factor proportional to the detection rate to each cluster to combine the results at the Fusion center (FC) by extracting the results of the reliable clusters. Numerical results obtained have shown that a superior detection performance and a minimum overhead can be achieved simultaneously by combining one bit and two schemes at the intra-cluster level while assigning a reliability factor at the inter-cluster level

Performance analysis of energy detector over generalised wireless channels in cognitive radio
This thesis was submitted for the award of Doctor of Philosophy and was awarded by Brunel University London. This thesis extensively analyses the performance of an energy detector which is
widely employed to perform spectrum sensing in cognitive radio over different generalised
channel models. In this analysis, both the average probability of detection and
the average area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) are derived
using the probability density function of the received instantaneous signal to noise
ratio (SNR). The performance of energy detector over an Ć --- ” fading, which is used
to model the Non-line-of-sight (NLoS) communication scenarios is provided. Then,
the behaviour of the energy detector over Đș --- ” shadowed fading channel, which is
a composite of generalized multipath/shadowing fading channel to model the lineof-
sight (LoS) communication medium is investigated. The analysis of the energy
detector over both Ć --- ” and Đș --- ” shadowed fading channels are then extended to
include maximal ratio combining (MRC), square law combining (SLC) and square
law selection (SLS) with independent and non-identically (i:n:d) diversity branches.
To overcome the problem of mathematical intractability in analysing the energy
detector over i:n:d composite fading channels with MRC and selection combining
(SC), two different unified statistical properties models for the sum and the maximum
of mixture gamma (MG) variates are derived. The first model is limited by the value
of the shadowing severity index, which should be an integer number and has been
employed to study the performance of energy detector over composite α --- ” /gamma
fading channel. This channel is proposed to represent the non-linear prorogation
environment. On the other side, the second model is general and has been utilised to
analyse the behaviour of energy detector over composite Ć --- ” /gamma fading channel.
Finally, a special filter-bank transform which is called slantlet packet transform
(SPT) is developed and used to estimate the uncertain noise power. Moreover, signal
denoising based on hybrid slantlet transform (HST) is employed to reduce the noise
impact on the performance of energy detector. The combined SPT-HST approach
improves the detection capability of energy detector with 97% and reduces the total
computational complexity by nearly 19% in comparison with previously implemented
work using filter-bank transforms. The aforementioned percentages are measured at
specific SNR, number of selected samples and levels of signal decompositionMartyrs Foundatio
