Developing algebraic and didactical knowledge in pre-service primary teacher education
This study analyzes the contribution of a teaching experiment for the development of
prospective primary teachers regarding knowledge of algebra and of algebra teaching
as well as their professional identity. The case study of a prospective teachersuggests
that an exploratory approach combining content and pedagogy supports this
development, especially in the need to propose challenging tasks, to provide
opportunity for students’ autonomous work and collective discussions and to be attentive to children’s representations and strategies in order to promote algebraic
thinking
Drone Warfare and Just War Theory
This book chapter addresses two questions. First, can targeted killing by drones in non-battlefield zones be justified on basis of just war theory? Second, will the proliferation and expansion of combat drones in warfare, including the introduction of autonomous drones, be an obstacle to initiating or executing wars in a just manner in the future? The first question is answered by applying traditional jus ad bellum (justice in the resort to war) and jus in bello (justice in the execution of war) principles to the American targeted killing campaign in Pakistan; the second question is answered on basis of principles of “just military preparedness” or jus ante bellum (justice before war), a new category of just war thinking. It is concluded that an international ban on weaponized drones is morally imperative and, certainly, that an international treaty against autonomous lethal weapons should be adopted
Information system support in construction industry with semantic web technologies and/or autonomous reasoning agents
Information technology support is hard to find for the early design phases of the architectural design process. Many of the existing issues in such design decision support tools appear to be caused by a mismatch between the ways in which designers think and the ways in which information systems aim to give support. We therefore started an investigation of existing theories of design thinking, compared to the way in which design decision support systems provide information to the designer. We identify two main strategies towards information system support in the early design phase: (1) applications for making design try-outs, and (2) applications as autonomous reasoning agents. We outline preview implementations for both approaches and indicate to what extent these strategies can be used to improve information system support for the architectural designer
Distributed Processes, Distributed Cognizers and Collaborative Cognition
Cognition is thinking; it feels like something to think, and only those who can feel can think. There are also things that thinkers can do. We know neither how thinkers can think nor how they are able do what they can do. We are waiting for cognitive science to discover how. Cognitive science does this by testing hypotheses about what processes can generate what doing (“know-how”) This is called the Turing Test. It cannot test whether a process can generate feeling, hence thinking -- only whether it can generate doing. The processes that generate thinking and know-how are “distributed” within the heads of thinkers, but not across thinkers’ heads. Hence there is no such thing as distributed cognition, only collaborative cognition. Email and the Web have spawned a new form of collaborative cognition that draws upon individual brains’ real-time interactive potential in ways that were not possible in oral, written or print interactions

The evolution of online teaching has evolved as quickly and vivaciously as the adoption of the World Wide Web. While there were and are skeptics, research shows that not only is online learning more convenient and makes educational available anytime and anywhere, it has the potential, in some cases, to be an improved tool for educating. To ensure maximized learning outcomes, and to experience the blessing and not the curse of online coursework, it is critical that universities embrace it wholeheartedly and follow online pedagogical best practices in developing and executing online courses. In addition, there are some courses where special forethought should be made to ensure online learning is effective. Courses that are more computational necessitate this consideration. Ethics of autonomous information systems towards an artificial thinking
Many projects relies on cognitives sciences, neurosciences, computer sciences
and robotics. They concerned today the building of autonomous artificial beings
able to think. This paper shows a model to compare the human thinking with an
hypothetic numerical way of thinking based on four hierarchies : the
information system classification, the cognitive pyramid, the linguistic
pyramid and the digital information hierarchy. After a state of art on the
nature of human thinking, feasibility of autonomous multi-agent systems
provided with artificial consciousness which are able to think is discussed.
The ethical aspects and consequences for humanity of such systems is evaluated.
