Autonomous clustering using rough set theory
This paper proposes a clustering technique that minimises the need for subjective
human intervention and is based on elements of rough set theory. The proposed algorithm is
unified in its approach to clustering and makes use of both local and global data properties to
obtain clustering solutions. It handles single-type and mixed attribute data sets with ease and
results from three data sets of single and mixed attribute types are used to illustrate the
technique and establish its efficiency
Clustering Patients with Tensor Decomposition
In this paper we present a method for the unsupervised clustering of
high-dimensional binary data, with a special focus on electronic healthcare
records. We present a robust and efficient heuristic to face this problem using
tensor decomposition. We present the reasons why this approach is preferable
for tasks such as clustering patient records, to more commonly used
distance-based methods. We run the algorithm on two datasets of healthcare

Streaming Scene Maps for Co-Robotic Exploration in Bandwidth Limited Environments
This paper proposes a bandwidth tunable technique for real-time probabilistic
scene modeling and mapping to enable co-robotic exploration in communication
constrained environments such as the deep sea. The parameters of the system
enable the user to characterize the scene complexity represented by the map,
which in turn determines the bandwidth requirements. The approach is
demonstrated using an underwater robot that learns an unsupervised scene model
of the environment and then uses this scene model to communicate the spatial
distribution of various high-level semantic scene constructs to a human
operator. Preliminary experiments in an artificially constructed tank
environment as well as simulated missions over a 10m10m coral reef
using real data show the tunability of the maps to different bandwidth
constraints and science interests. To our knowledge this is the first paper to
quantify how the free parameters of the unsupervised scene model impact both
the scientific utility of and bandwidth required to communicate the resulting

EVALUATING ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE METHODS FOR USE IN KILL CHAIN FUNCTIONS
Current naval operations require sailors to make time-critical and high-stakes decisions based on uncertain situational knowledge in dynamic operational environments. Recent tragic events have resulted in unnecessary casualties, and they represent the decision complexity involved in naval operations and specifically highlight challenges within the OODA loop (Observe, Orient, Decide, and Assess). Kill chain decisions involving the use of weapon systems are a particularly stressing category within the OODA loop—with unexpected threats that are difficult to identify with certainty, shortened decision reaction times, and lethal consequences. An effective kill chain requires the proper setup and employment of shipboard sensors; the identification and classification of unknown contacts; the analysis of contact intentions based on kinematics and intelligence; an awareness of the environment; and decision analysis and resource selection. This project explored the use of automation and artificial intelligence (AI) to improve naval kill chain decisions. The team studied naval kill chain functions and developed specific evaluation criteria for each function for determining the efficacy of specific AI methods. Aggregation and Control of Populations of Thermostatically Controlled Loads by Formal Abstractions
This work discusses a two-step procedure, based on formal abstractions, to
generate a finite-space stochastic dynamical model as an aggregation of the
continuous temperature dynamics of a homogeneous population of Thermostatically
Controlled Loads (TCL). The temperature of a single TCL is described by a
stochastic difference equation and the TCL status (ON, OFF) by a deterministic
switching mechanism. The procedure is formal as it allows the exact
quantification of the error introduced by the abstraction -- as such it builds
and improves on a known, earlier approximation technique in the literature.
Further, the contribution discusses the extension to the case of a
heterogeneous population of TCL by means of two approaches resulting in the
notion of approximate abstractions. It moreover investigates the problem of
global (population-level) regulation and load balancing for the case of TCL
that are dependent on a control input. The procedure is tested on a case study
