    Reinforcement Learning in Education: A Multi-Armed Bandit Approach

    Advances in reinforcement learning research have demonstrated the ways in which different agent-based models can learn how to optimally perform a task within a given environment. Reinforcement leaning solves unsupervised problems where agents move through a state-action-reward loop to maximize the overall reward for the agent, which in turn optimizes the solving of a specific problem in a given environment. However, these algorithms are designed based on our understanding of actions that should be taken in a real-world environment to solve a specific problem. One such problem is the ability to identify, recommend and execute an action within a system where the users are the subject, such as in education. In recent years, the use of blended learning approaches integrating face-to-face learning with online learning in the education context, has in-creased. Additionally, online platforms used for education require the automation of certain functions such as the identification, recommendation or execution of actions that can benefit the user, in this sense, the student or learner. As promising as these scientific advances are, there is still a need to conduct research in a variety of different areas to ensure the successful deployment of these agents within education systems.     Learn Smarter, Not Harder – Exploring the Development of Learning Analytics Use Cases to Create Tailor-Made Online Learning Experiences

    Our world is significantly shaped by digitalization, fostering new opportunities for technology-mediated learning. Therefore, massive amounts of knowledge become available online. However, concurrently these formats entail less interaction and guidance from lecturers. Thus, learners need to be supported by intelligent learning tools that provide suitable knowledge in a tailored way. In this context, the use of learning analytics in its multifaceted forms is essential. Existing literature shows a proliferation of learning analytics use cases without a systematic structure. Based on a structured literature review of 42 papers we organized existing literature contributions systematically and derived four use cases: learning dashboards, individualized content, tutoring systems, and adaptable learning process based on personality. Our use cases will serve as a basis for a targeted scientific discourse and are valuable orientation for the development of future learning analytics use cases to give rise to the new form of Learning Experience Platforms

    Incorporating proactivity to context-aware recommender systems for e-learning

    Recommender systems in e-learning have proved to be powerful tools to find suitable educational material during the learning experience. But traditional user request-response patterns are still being used to generate these recommendations. By including contextual information derived from the use of ubiquitous learning environments, the possibility of incorporating proactivity to the recommendation process has arisen. In this paper we describe methods to push proactive recommendations to e-learning systems users when the situation is appropriate without being needed their explicit request. As a result, interesting learning objects can be recommended attending to the user?s needs in every situation. The impact of this proactive recommendations generated have been evaluated among teachers and scientists in a real e-learning social network called Virtual Science Hub related to the GLOBAL excursion European project. Outcomes indicate that the methods proposed are valid to generate such kind of recommendations in e-learning scenarios. The results also show that the users' perceived appropriateness of having proactive recommendations is high

    Information systems (IS) research has always been one of the leading applied research areas in the investigation of technology-related phenomena. Meanwhile, for the past 10 years, artificial intelligence (AI) has transformed every aspect of society more than any other technological innovation. Thus, this is the right time for IS research to foster more quality and high-impact research on AI starting by organizing the cumulated body of knowledge on AI in IS research. We propose a framework called AI capability framework that would provide pertinent and relevant guidance for conducting IS research on AI. Since AI is a fast-evolving phenomenon, this framework is founded on the main AI capabilities that shape today’s fast-moving AI ecosystem.
