    A Radio-fingerprinting-based Vehicle Classification System for Intelligent Traffic Control in Smart Cities

    The measurement and provision of precise and upto-date traffic-related key performance indicators is a key element and crucial factor for intelligent traffic controls systems in upcoming smart cities. The street network is considered as a highly-dynamic Cyber Physical System (CPS) where measured information forms the foundation for dynamic control methods aiming to optimize the overall system state. Apart from global system parameters like traffic flow and density, specific data such as velocity of individual vehicles as well as vehicle type information can be leveraged for highly sophisticated traffic control methods like dynamic type-specific lane assignments. Consequently, solutions for acquiring these kinds of information are required and have to comply with strict requirements ranging from accuracy over cost-efficiency to privacy preservation. In this paper, we present a system for classifying vehicles based on their radio-fingerprint. In contrast to other approaches, the proposed system is able to provide real-time capable and precise vehicle classification as well as cost-efficient installation and maintenance, privacy preservation and weather independence. The system performance in terms of accuracy and resource-efficiency is evaluated in the field using comprehensive measurements. Using a machine learning based approach, the resulting success ratio for classifying cars and trucks is above 99%

    An Alternative Vehicle Counting Tool Using the Kalman Filter within MATLAB

    This study proposes an alternative and economical tool to estimate traffic densities, via video-image processing adapting the Kalman filter included in the Matlab code. Traffic information involves acquiring data for long periods of time at stationary points. Vehicle counting is vital in modern transport studies, and can be achieved by using different techniques, such as manual counts, use of pneumatic tubes, magnetic sensors, etc. In this research however, automatic vehicle detection was achieved using image processing, because it is an economical and sometimes even faster option. Commercial automatic vehicle detection and tracking programs/applications already exist, but their use is typically prohibitive due to their high cost. Large cities can obtain traffic recordings from surveillance cameras and process the information, but it is difficult for smaller towns without such infrastructure or even assigned budget. The proposed tool was developed taking into consideration these difficult situations, and it only requires users to have access to a fixed video camera placed at an elevated point (e.g. a pedestrian bridge or a light pole) and a computer with a powerful processor; the images are processed automatically through the Kalman filter code within Matlab. The Kalman filter predicts random signals, separates signals from random noise or detects signals with the presence of noise, minimizing the estimated error. It needs nevertheless some adjustments to focus it for vehicle counting. The proposed algorithm can thus be adapted to fit the users’ necessities and even the camera’s position. The use of this algorithm allows to obtain traffic data and may help small cities´ decision makers dealing with present and future urban planning and the design or installment of transportation systems

    Vehicle detection is one of the primal challenges of modern driver-assistance systems owing to the numerous factors, for instance, complicated surroundings, diverse types of vehicles with varied appearance and magnitude, low-resolution videos, fast-moving vehicles. It is utilized for multitudinous applications including traffic surveillance and collision prevention. This paper suggests a Vehicle Detection algorithm developed on Image Processing and Machine Learning. The presented algorithm is predicated on a Support Vector Machine(SVM) Classifier which employs feature vectors extracted via Histogram of Gradients(HOG) approach conducted on a semi-real time basis. A comparison study is presented stating the performance metrics of the algorithm on different datasets

    Vehicle classification by estimation of the direction angle in a mixed traffic flow

    The application of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) is very important in developing societies nowadays. Vehicle monitoring is one of the primary tasks of ITS, where vehicles are classified by lanes for traffic management, especially in case of a mixed flow of motorcycles and other automobiles in the transport system of Vietnam. This paper proposes a new approach in vehicle classification, which is based on evaluation of the direction angle of the first primary axis of each coming vehicle detected in the captured video sequence and map into the predetermined database to mark it as motorcycle or automobiles instead of consideration of vehicle size. The experimental results show that the classification performance is promising, especially for motorcycles and cars, and therefore is applicable in detection of vehicle penalties moving in wrong lanes
