    Road extraction from high resolution satellite images has been an important research topic for analysis of urban areas. In this paper road extraction based on PCNN and Chan-Vese active contour model are compared. It is difficult and computationally expensive to extract roads from the original image due to presences of other road-like features with straight edges. The image is pre-processed using median filter to reduce the noise. Then road extraction is performed using PCNN and Chan-Vese active contour model. Nonlinear segments are removed using morphological operations. Finally the accuracy for the road extracted images is evaluated based on quality measures.Izdvajanje cesta pomoću satelitskih slika visoke rezolucije je važna istraživačka tema za analizu urbanih područja. U ovom radu ekstrakcije ceste se uspoređuju na PCNN i Chan-Vese aktivnom modelu. Teško je i računalno skupo izdvojiti ceste iz originalne slike zbog prisutnosti drugih elemenata ravnih rubova sličnih cestama. Slika je prethodno obrađena korištenjem filtera za smanjenje smetnji. Zatim se ekstrakcija ceste izvodi pomoću PCNN i Chan-Vese aktivnog modela konture. Nelinearni segmenti su uklonjeni primjenom morfoloških operacija. Konačno, točnost za ceste izdvojene iz slika se ocjenjuje na temelju kvalitativnih mjera

    Road Tracking from High resolution IRS And IKONOS Images Using Unscented Kalman Filtering

    A typical way to update map is to compare recent satellite images with existing map data, detect new roads and add them as cartographic entities to the road layer. At present image processing and pattern recognition are not robust enough to automate the image interpretation system feasible. For this reason we have to develop an image interpretation system that rely on human guidance. More importantly road maps require final checking by a human due to the legal implementations of error. Our proposed technique is applied to IRS and IKONOS images using Unscented Kalman Filter(UKF) . UKF is used for tracing the median axis of the single road segment. The Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) is probably the most widely used estimation algorithm for road tracking. However, more than 35 years of experience in the estimation community has shown that is difficult to implement and is difficult to tune. To overcome this limitation,UKF is introduced in road tracking which is more accurate, easier to implement, and uses the same order of calculations as linearization. The principles and algorithm of EKF and UKF were also discussed. The core of our system is based on profile matching.UKF traces the roadbeyond obstacles and tries to find the continuation of the road finding all road branches initializing at the road junction.The completeness and correctness of road tracking from the IRS and IKONOS images were also compared

    Vehicle detection and tracking applications play an important role for civilian and military applications such as in highway traffic surveillance control, management and urban traffic planning. Vehicle detection process on road are used for vehicle tracking, counts, average speed of each individual vehicle, traffic analysis and vehicle categorizing objectives and may be implemented under different environments changes. In this review, we present a concise overview of image processing methods and analysis tools which used in building these previous mentioned applications that involved developing traffic surveillance systems.     The Potential of Active Contour Models in Extracting Road Edges from Mobile Laser Scanning Data

    Active contour models present a robust segmentation approach, which makes efficient use of specific information about objects in the input data rather than processing all of the data. They have been widely-used in many applications, including image segmentation, object boundary localisation, motion tracking, shape modelling, stereo matching and object reconstruction. In this paper, we investigate the potential of active contour models in extracting road edges from Mobile Laser Scanning (MLS) data. The categorisation of active contours based on their mathematical representation and implementation is discussed in detail. We discuss an integrated version in which active contour models are combined to overcome their limitations. We review various active contour-based methodologies, which have been developed to extract road features from LiDAR and digital imaging datasets. We present a case study in which an integrated version of active contour models is applied to extract road edges from MLS dataset. An accurate extraction of left and right edges from the tested road section validates the use of active contour models. The present study provides valuable insight into the potential of active contours for extracting roads from 3D LiDAR point cloud data
