    Automatic reconstruction of parametric building models from indoor point clouds

    AbstractWe present an automatic approach for the reconstruction of parametric 3D building models from indoor point clouds. While recently developed methods in this domain focus on mere local surface reconstructions which enable e.g. efficient visualization, our approach aims for a volumetric, parametric building model that additionally incorporates contextual information such as global wall connectivity. In contrast to pure surface reconstructions, our representation thereby allows more comprehensive use: first, it enables efficient high-level editing operations in terms of e.g. wall removal or room reshaping which always result in a topologically consistent representation. Second, it enables easy taking of measurements like e.g. determining wall thickness or room areas. These properties render our reconstruction method especially beneficial to architects or engineers for planning renovation or retrofitting. Following the idea of previous approaches, the reconstruction task is cast as a labeling problem which is solved by an energy minimization. This global optimization approach allows for the reconstruction of wall elements shared between rooms while simultaneously maintaining plausible connectivity between all wall elements. An automatic prior segmentation of the point clouds into rooms and outside area filters large-scale outliers and yields priors for the definition of labeling costs for the energy minimization. The reconstructed model is further enriched by detected doors and windows. We demonstrate the applicability and reconstruction power of our new approach on a variety of complex real-world datasets requiring little or no parameter adjustment

    Current State of the Art Historic Building Information Modelling

    In an extensive review of existing literature a number of observations were made in relation to the current approaches for recording and modelling existing buildings and environments: Data collection and pre-processing techniques are becoming increasingly automated to allow for near real-time data capture and fast processing of this data for later modelling applications. Current BIM software is almost completely focused on new buildings and has very limited tools and pre-defined libraries for modelling existing and historic buildings. The development of reusable parametric library objects for existing and historic buildings supports modelling with high levels of detail while decreasing the modelling time. Mapping these parametric objects to survey data, however, is still a time-consuming task that requires further research. Promising developments have been made towards automatic object recognition and feature extraction from point clouds for as-built BIM. However, results are currently limited to simple and planar features. Further work is required for automatic accurate and reliable reconstruction of complex geometries from point cloud data. Procedural modelling can provide an automated solution for generating 3D geometries but lacks the detail and accuracy required for most as-built applications in AEC and heritage fields

    A semi-automated approach to model architectural elements in Scan-to-BIM processes

    In the last years, the AEC (Architecture, Engineering and Construction) domain has exponentially increased the use of BIM and HBIM models for several applications, such as planning renovation and restoration, building maintenance, cost managing, or structural/energetic retrofit design. However, obtaining detailed as-built BIM models is a demanding and time-consuming process. Especially in historical contexts, many different and complex architectural elements need to be carefully and manually modelled. Meshes or surfaces and NURBS or polylines, derived from 3D reality-based data, are recently used as a reference for the HBIM accurate modelling. This work proposes a comprehensive and novel semi-automated approach to reconstruct architectural elements through the Visual Programming Language (VPL) Dynamo software and a Boundary-Representation method (B-rep), starting from 3D surveying data and point clouds classification. A wide package of scripts provides solutions for modelling complex shapes and transferring the obtained 3D models into BIM Authoring tools for a complete reconstruction phase. The presented procedure, useful for different BIM or HBIM applications, proved to reduce the modelling time significantly

    FROM 3D SURVEYING DATA TO BIM TO BEM: THE INCUBE DATASET

    In recent years, the improvement of sensors and methodologies for 3D reality-based surveying has exponentially enhanced the possibility of creating digital replicas of the real world. LiDAR technologies and photogrammetry are currently standard approaches for collecting 3D geometric information of indoor and outdoor environments at different scales. This information can potentially be part of a broader processing workflow that, starting from 3D surveyed data and through Building Information Models (BIM) generation, leads to more complex analyses of buildings’ features and behavior (Figure 1). However, creating BIM models, especially of historic and heritage assets (HBIM), is still resource-intensive and time-consuming due to the manual efforts required for data creation and enrichment. Improve 3D data processing, interoperability, and the automation of the BIM generation process are some of the trending research topics, and benchmark datasets are extremely helpful in evaluating newly developed algorithms and methodologies for these scopes. This paper introduces the InCUBE dataset, resulting from the activities of the recently funded EU InCUBE project, focused on unlocking the EU building renovation through integrated strategies and processes for efficient built-environment management (including the use of innovative renewable energy technologies and digitalization). The set of data collects raw and processed data produced for the Italian demo site in the Santa Chiara district of Trento (Italy). The diversity of the shared data enables multiple possible uses, investigations and developments, and some of them are presented in this contribution

    Automatic Reconstruction of Parametric, Volumetric Building Models from 3D Point Clouds

    Planning, construction, modification, and analysis of buildings requires means of representing a building's physical structure and related semantics in a meaningful way. With the rise of novel technologies and increasing requirements in the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) domain, two general concepts for representing buildings have gained particular attention in recent years. First, the concept of Building Information Modeling (BIM) is increasingly used as a modern means for representing and managing a building's as-planned state digitally, including not only a geometric model but also various additional semantic properties. Second, point cloud measurements are now widely used for capturing a building's as-built condition by means of laser scanning techniques. A particular challenge and topic of current research are methods for combining the strengths of both point cloud measurements and Building Information Modeling concepts to quickly obtain accurate building models from measured data. In this thesis, we present our recent approaches to tackle the intermeshed challenges of automated indoor point cloud interpretation using targeted segmentation methods, and the automatic reconstruction of high-level, parametric and volumetric building models as the basis for further usage in BIM scenarios. In contrast to most reconstruction methods available at the time, we fundamentally base our approaches on BIM principles and standards, and overcome critical limitations of previous approaches in order to reconstruct globally plausible, volumetric, and parametric models.Automatische Rekonstruktion von parametrischen, volumetrischen Gebäudemodellen aus 3D Punktwolken Für die Planung, Konstruktion, Modifikation und Analyse von Gebäuden werden Möglichkeiten zur sinnvollen Repräsentation der physischen Gebäudestruktur sowie dazugehöriger Semantik benötigt. Mit dem Aufkommen neuer Technologien und steigenden Anforderungen im Bereich von Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) haben zwei Konzepte für die Repräsentation von Gebäuden in den letzten Jahren besondere Aufmerksamkeit erlangt. Erstens wird das Konzept des Building Information Modeling (BIM) zunehmend als ein modernes Mittel zur digitalen Abbildung und Verwaltung "As-Planned"-Zustands von Gebäuden verwendet, welches nicht nur ein geometrisches Modell sondern auch verschiedene zusätzliche semantische Eigenschaften beinhaltet. Zweitens werden Punktwolkenmessungen inzwischen häufig zur Aufnahme des "As-Built"-Zustands mittels Laser-Scan-Techniken eingesetzt. Eine besondere Herausforderung und Thema aktueller Forschung ist die Entwicklung von Methoden zur Vereinigung der Stärken von Punktwolken und Konzepten des Building Information Modeling um schnell akkurate Gebäudemodelle aus den gemessenen Daten zu erzeugen. In dieser Dissertation präsentieren wir unsere aktuellen Ansätze um die miteinander verwobenen Herausforderungen anzugehen, Punktwolken mithilfe geeigneter Segmentierungsmethoden automatisiert zu interpretieren, sowie hochwertige, parametrische und volumetrische Gebäudemodelle als Basis für die Verwendung im BIM-Umfeld zu rekonstruieren. Im Gegensatz zu den meisten derzeit verfügbaren Rekonstruktionsverfahren basieren unsere Ansätze grundlegend auf Prinzipien und Standards aus dem BIM-Umfeld und überwinden kritische Einschränkungen bisheriger Ansätze um vollständig plausible, volumetrische und parametrische Modelle zu erzeugen.</p

    State of research in automatic as-built modelling

Automatically generating such representations for existing assets stirs up the interest of various industrial, academic, and governmental parties, as it is expected to have a high economic impact. The purpose of this paper is to provide a general overview of the as-built modelling process, with focus on the geometric modelling side.     Towards automatic reconstruction of indoor scenes from incomplete point clouds: door and window detection and regularization

    In the last years, point clouds have become the main source of information for building modelling. Although a considerable amount of methodologies addressing the automated generation of 3D models from point clouds have been developed, indoor modelling is still a challenging task due to complex building layouts and the high presence of severe clutters and occlusions. Most of methodologies are highly dependent on data quality, often producing irregular and non-consistent models. Although manmade environments generally exhibit some regularities, they are not commonly considered. This paper presents an optimization-based approach for detecting regularities (i.e., same shape, same alignment and same spacing) in building indoor features. The methodology starts from the detection of openings based on a voxel-based visibility analysis to distinguish ‘occluded’ from ‘empty’ regions in wall surfaces. The extraction of regular patterns in windows is addressed from studying the point cloud from an outdoor perspective.     Data-Driven Shape Analysis and Processing

    Data-driven methods play an increasingly important role in discovering geometric, structural, and semantic relationships between 3D shapes in collections, and applying this analysis to support intelligent modeling, editing, and visualization of geometric data. In contrast to traditional approaches, a key feature of data-driven approaches is that they aggregate information from a collection of shapes to improve the analysis and processing of individual shapes. In addition, they are able to learn models that reason about properties and relationships of shapes without relying on hard-coded rules or explicitly programmed instructions. We provide an overview of the main concepts and components of these techniques, and discuss their application to shape classification, segmentation, matching, reconstruction, modeling and exploration, as well as scene analysis and synthesis, through reviewing the literature and relating the existing works with both qualitative and numerical comparisons. We conclude our report with ideas that can inspire future research in data-driven shape analysis and processing.Comment: 10 pages, 19 figure
