MoWLD: A Robust Motion Image Descriptor for Violence Detection
Abstract Automatic violence detection from video is a hot topic for many video surveillance applications. However, there has been little success in designing an algorithm that can detect violence in surveillance videos with high performance. Existing methods typically apply the Bagof-Words (BoW) model on local spatiotemporal descriptors. However, traditional spatiotemporal features are not discriminative enough, and also the BoW model roughly assigns each feature vector to only one visual word and therefore ignores the spatial relationships among the features. To tackle these problems, in this paper we propose a novel Motion Weber Local Descriptor (MoWLD) in the spirit of the well-known WLD and make it a powerful and robust descriptor for motion images. We extend the WLD spatial descriptions by adding a temporal component to the appearance descriptor, which implicitly captures local motion information as well as low-level image appear information. To eliminate redundant and irrelevant features, the nonparametric Kernel Density Estimation (KDE) is employed on the MoWLD descriptor. In order to obtain more discriminative features, we adopt the sparse coding and max pooling scheme to further process the selected MoWLDs. Experimental results on three benchmark datasets have demonstrated the superiority of the proposed approach over the state-of-the-arts
Multigranularity Representations for Human Inter-Actions: Pose, Motion and Intention
Tracking people and their body pose in videos is a central problem in computer vision. Standard tracking representations reason about temporal coherence of detected people and body parts. They have difficulty tracking targets under partial occlusions or rare body poses, where detectors often fail, since the number of training examples is often too small to deal with the exponential variability of such configurations.
We propose tracking representations that track and segment people and their body pose in videos by exploiting information at multiple detection and segmentation granularities when available, whole body, parts or point trajectories.
Detections and motion estimates provide contradictory information in case of false alarm detections or leaking motion affinities. We consolidate contradictory information via graph steering, an algorithm for simultaneous detection and co-clustering in a two-granularity graph of motion trajectories and detections, that corrects motion leakage between correctly detected objects, while being robust to false alarms or spatially inaccurate detections.
We first present a motion segmentation framework that exploits long range motion of point trajectories and large spatial support of image regions.
We show resulting video segments adapt to targets under partial occlusions and deformations.
Second, we augment motion-based representations with object detection for dealing with motion leakage. We demonstrate how to combine dense optical flow trajectory affinities with repulsions from confident detections to reach a global consensus of detection and tracking in crowded scenes.
Third, we study human motion and pose estimation.
We segment hard to detect, fast moving body limbs from their surrounding clutter and match them against pose exemplars to detect body pose under fast motion. We employ on-the-fly human body kinematics to improve tracking of body joints under wide deformations.
We use motion segmentability of body parts for re-ranking a set of body joint candidate trajectories and jointly infer multi-frame body pose and video segmentation.
We show empirically that such multi-granularity tracking representation is worthwhile, obtaining significantly more accurate multi-object tracking and detailed body pose estimation in popular datasets
Convolutional Neural Network for Face Recognition with Pose and Illumination Variation
Face recognition remains a challenging problem till today. The main challenge is how to improve the recognition performance when affected by the variability of non-linear effects that include illumination variances, poses, facial expressions, occlusions, etc. In this paper, a robust 4-layer Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) architecture is proposed for the face recognition problem, with a solution that is capable of handling facial images that contain occlusions, poses, facial expressions and varying illumination. Experimental results show that the proposed CNN solution outperforms existing works, achieving 99.5% recognition accuracy on AR database. The test on the 35-subjects of FERET database achieves an accuracy of 85.13%, which is in the similar range of performance as the best result of previous works. More significantly, our proposed system completes the facial recognition process in less than 0.01 seconds
LookOut! Interactive Camera Gimbal Controller for Filming Long Takes
The job of a camera operator is more challenging, and potentially dangerous,
when filming long moving camera shots. Broadly, the operator must keep the
actors in-frame while safely navigating around obstacles, and while fulfilling
an artistic vision. We propose a unified hardware and software system that
distributes some of the camera operator's burden, freeing them up to focus on
safety and aesthetics during a take. Our real-time system provides a solo
operator with end-to-end control, so they can balance on-set responsiveness to
action vs planned storyboards and framing, while looking where they're going.
By default, we film without a field monitor.
Our LookOut system is built around a lightweight commodity camera gimbal
mechanism, with heavy modifications to the controller, which would normally
just provide active stabilization. Our control algorithm reacts to speech
commands, video, and a pre-made script. Specifically, our automatic monitoring
of the live video feed saves the operator from distractions. In pre-production,
an artist uses our GUI to design a sequence of high-level camera "behaviors."
Those can be specific, based on a storyboard, or looser objectives, such as
"frame both actors." Then during filming, a machine-readable script, exported
from the GUI, ties together with the sensor readings to drive the gimbal. To
validate our algorithm, we compared tracking strategies, interfaces, and
hardware protocols, and collected impressions from a) film-makers who used all
aspects of our system, and b) film-makers who watched footage filmed using

Improved robustness and efficiency for automatic visual site monitoring

Video sensors backed by computer vision algorithms are a natural way to gather this data. Unfortunately, key technical issues persist in extracting features and models that are simultaneously efficient to compute and robust to issues such as adverse lighting conditions, distracting background motions, appearance changes over time, and occlusions. In this thesis, we present a set of techniques and model enhancements to better handle these problems, focusing on contributions in four areas. First, we improve background subtraction so it can better handle temporally irregular dynamic textures. This allows us to achieve a 5.5% drop in false positive rate on the Wallflower waving trees video. Secondly, we adapt the Dalal and Triggs Histogram of Oriented Gradients pedestrian detector to work on large-scale scenes with dense crowds and harsh lighting conditions: challenges which prevent us from easily using a background subtraction solution. These scenes contain hundreds of simultaneously visible people. To make using the algorithm computationally feasible, we have produced a novel implementation that runs on commodity graphics hardware and is up to 76 faster than our CPU-only implementation. We demonstrate the utility of this detector by modeling scene-level activities with a Hierarchical Dirichlet Process.(cont.) Third, we show how one can improve the quality of pedestrian silhouettes for recognizing individual people. We combine general appearance information from a large population of pedestrians with semi-periodic shape information from individual silhouette sequences. Finally, we show how one can combine a variety of detection and tracking techniques to robustly handle a variety of event detection scenarios such as theft and left-luggage detection. Tracking interacting targets in multi-modal sensors
PhDObject tracking is one of the fundamental tasks in various applications such as surveillance,
sports, video conferencing and activity recognition. Factors such as occlusions,
illumination changes and limited field of observance of the sensor make tracking a challenging
task. To overcome these challenges the focus of this thesis is on using multiple
modalities such as audio and video for multi-target, multi-modal tracking. Particularly,
this thesis presents contributions to four related research topics, namely, pre-processing of
input signals to reduce noise, multi-modal tracking, simultaneous detection and tracking,
and interaction recognition.
To improve the performance of detection algorithms, especially in the presence
of noise, this thesis investigate filtering of the input data through spatio-temporal feature
analysis as well as through frequency band analysis. The pre-processed data from multiple
modalities is then fused within Particle filtering (PF). To further minimise the discrepancy
between the real and the estimated positions, we propose a strategy that associates the
hypotheses and the measurements with a real target, using a Weighted Probabilistic Data
Association (WPDA). Since the filtering involved in the detection process reduces the
available information and is inapplicable on low signal-to-noise ratio data, we investigate
simultaneous detection and tracking approaches and propose a multi-target track-beforedetect
Particle filtering (MT-TBD-PF). The proposed MT-TBD-PF algorithm bypasses
the detection step and performs tracking in the raw signal. Finally, we apply the proposed
multi-modal tracking to recognise interactions between targets in regions within, as well
as outside the cameras’ fields of view.
The efficiency of the proposed approaches are demonstrated on large uni-modal,
multi-modal and multi-sensor scenarios from real world detections, tracking and event
recognition datasets and through participation in evaluation campaigns

Video content analysis for automated detection and tracking of humans in CCTV surveillance applications
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University.The problems of achieving high detection rate with low false alarm rate for human detection and tracking in video sequence, performance scalability, and improving response time are addressed in this thesis. The underlying causes are the effect of scene complexity, human-to-human interactions, scale changes, and scene background-human interactions. A two-stage processing solution, namely, human detection, and human tracking with two novel pattern classifiers is presented. Scale independent human detection is achieved by processing in the wavelet domain using square wavelet features. These features used to characterise human silhouettes at different scales are similar to rectangular features used in [Viola 2001]. At the detection stage two detectors are combined to improve detection rate. The first detector is based on shape-outline of humans extracted from the scene using a reduced complexity outline extraction algorithm. A Shape mismatch measure is used to differentiate between the human and the background class. The second detector uses rectangular features as primitives for silhouette description in the wavelet domain. The marginal distribution of features collocated at a particular position on a candidate human (a patch of the image) is used to describe statistically the silhouette. Two similarity measures are computed between a candidate human and the model histograms of human and non human classes. The similarity measure is used to discriminate between the human and the non human class. At the tracking stage, a tracker based on joint probabilistic data association filter (JPDAF) for data association, and motion correspondence is presented. Track clustering is used to reduce hypothesis enumeration complexity. Towards improving response time with increase in frame dimension, scene complexity, and number of channels; a scalable algorithmic architecture and operating accuracy prediction technique is presented. A scheduling strategy for improving the response time and throughput by parallel processing is also presented
