    Unifying the Visible and Passive Infrared Bands: Homogeneous and Heterogeneous Multi-Spectral Face Recognition

    Face biometrics leverages tools and technology in order to automate the identification of individuals. In most cases, biometric face recognition (FR) can be used for forensic purposes, but there remains the issue related to the integration of technology into the legal system of the court. The biggest challenge with the acceptance of the face as a modality used in court is the reliability of such systems under varying pose, illumination and expression, which has been an active and widely explored area of research over the last few decades (e.g. same-spectrum or homogeneous matching). The heterogeneous FR problem, which deals with matching face images from different sensors, should be examined for the benefit of military and law enforcement applications as well. In this work we are concerned primarily with visible band images (380-750 nm) and the infrared (IR) spectrum, which has become an area of growing interest.;For homogeneous FR systems, we formulate and develop an efficient, semi-automated, direct matching-based FR framework, that is designed to operate efficiently when face data is captured using either visible or passive IR sensors. Thus, it can be applied in both daytime and nighttime environments. First, input face images are geometrically normalized using our pre-processing pipeline prior to feature-extraction. Then, face-based features including wrinkles, veins, as well as edges of facial characteristics, are detected and extracted for each operational band (visible, MWIR, and LWIR). Finally, global and local face-based matching is applied, before fusion is performed at the score level. Although this proposed matcher performs well when same-spectrum FR is performed, regardless of spectrum, a challenge exists when cross-spectral FR matching is performed. The second framework is for the heterogeneous FR problem, and deals with the issue of bridging the gap across the visible and passive infrared (MWIR and LWIR) spectrums. Specifically, we investigate the benefits and limitations of using synthesized visible face images from thermal and vice versa, in cross-spectral face recognition systems when utilizing canonical correlation analysis (CCA) and locally linear embedding (LLE), a manifold learning technique for dimensionality reduction. Finally, by conducting an extensive experimental study we establish that the combination of the proposed synthesis and demographic filtering scheme increases system performance in terms of rank-1 identification rate

    Face Recognition: Issues, Methods and Alternative Applications

    Face recognition, as one of the most successful applications of image analysis, has recently gained significant attention. It is due to availability of feasible technologies, including mobile solutions. Research in automatic face recognition has been conducted since the 1960s, but the problem is still largely unsolved. Last decade has provided significant progress in this area owing to advances in face modelling and analysis techniques. Although systems have been developed for face detection and tracking, reliable face recognition still offers a great challenge to computer vision and pattern recognition researchers. There are several reasons for recent increased interest in face recognition, including rising public concern for security, the need for identity verification in the digital world, face analysis and modelling techniques in multimedia data management and computer entertainment. In this chapter, we have discussed face recognition processing, including major components such as face detection, tracking, alignment and feature extraction, and it points out the technical challenges of building a face recognition system. We focus on the importance of the most successful solutions available so far. The final part of the chapter describes chosen face recognition methods and applications and their potential use in areas not related to face recognition

    Photo-realistic face synthesis and reenactment with deep generative models

    The advent of Deep Learning has led to numerous breakthroughs in the field of Computer Vision. Over the last decade, a significant amount of research has been undertaken towards designing neural networks for visual data analysis. At the same time, rapid advancements have been made towards the direction of deep generative modeling, especially after the introduction of Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), which have shown particularly promising results when it comes to synthesising visual data. Since then, considerable attention has been devoted to the problem of photo-realistic human face animation due to its wide range of applications, including image and video editing, virtual assistance, social media, teleconferencing, and augmented reality. The objective of this thesis is to make progress towards generating photo-realistic videos of human faces. To that end, we propose novel generative algorithms that provide explicit control over the facial expression and head pose of synthesised subjects. Despite the major advances in face reenactment and motion transfer, current methods struggle to generate video portraits that are indistinguishable from real data. In this work, we aim to overcome the limitations of existing approaches, by combining concepts from deep generative networks and video-to-video translation with 3D face modelling, and more specifically by capitalising on prior knowledge of faces that is enclosed within statistical models such as 3D Morphable Models (3DMMs). In the first part of this thesis, we introduce a person-specific system that performs full head reenactment using ideas from video-to-video translation. Subsequently, we propose a novel approach to controllable video portrait synthesis, inspired from Implicit Neural Representations (INR). In the second part of the thesis, we focus on person-agnostic methods and present a GAN-based framework that performs video portrait reconstruction, full head reenactment, expression editing, novel pose synthesis and face frontalisation.Open Acces

    THREE DIMENSIONAL MODELING AND ANIMATION OF FACIAL EXPRESSIONS

    Facial expression and animation are important aspects of the 3D environment featuring human characters. These animations are frequently used in many kinds of applications and there have been many efforts to increase the realism. Three aspects are still stimulating active research: the detailed subtle facial expressions, the process of rigging a face, and the transfer of an expression from one person to another. This dissertation focuses on the above three aspects. A system for freely designing and creating detailed, dynamic, and animated facial expressions is developed. The presented pattern functions produce detailed and animated facial expressions. The system produces realistic results with fast performance, and allows users to directly manipulate it and see immediate results. Two unique methods for generating real-time, vivid, and animated tears have been developed and implemented. One method is for generating a teardrop that continually changes its shape as the tear drips down the face. The other is for generating a shedding tear, which is a kind of tear that seamlessly connects with the skin as it flows along the surface of the face, but remains an individual object. The methods both broaden CG and increase the realism of facial expressions. A new method to automatically set the bones on facial/head models to speed up the rigging process of a human face is also developed. To accomplish this, vertices that describe the face/head as well as relationships between each part of the face/head are grouped. The average distance between pairs of vertices is used to place the head bones. To set the bones in the face with multi-density, the mean value of the vertices in a group is measured. The time saved with this method is significant. A novel method to produce realistic expressions and animations by transferring an existing expression to a new facial model is developed. The approach is to transform the source model into the target model, which then has the same topology as the source model. The displacement vectors are calculated. Each vertex in the source model is mapped to the target model. The spatial relationships of each mapped vertex are constrained

    Multimodal Adversarial Learning

    Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (DCNN) have proven to be an exceptional tool for object recognition, generative modelling, and multi-modal learning in various computer vision applications. However, recent findings have shown that such state-of-the-art models can be easily deceived by inserting slight imperceptible perturbations to key pixels in the input. A good target detection systems can accurately identify targets by localizing their coordinates on the input image of interest. This is ideally achieved by labeling each pixel in an image as a background or a potential target pixel. However, prior research still confirms that such state of the art targets models are susceptible to adversarial attacks. In the case of generative models, facial sketches drawn by artists mostly used by law enforcement agencies depend on the ability of the artist to clearly replicate all the key facial features that aid in capturing the true identity of a subject. Recent works have attempted to synthesize these sketches into plausible visual images to improve visual recognition and identification. However, synthesizing photo-realistic images from sketches proves to be an even more challenging task, especially for sensitive applications such as suspect identification. However, the incorporation of hybrid discriminators, which perform attribute classification of multiple target attributes, a quality guided encoder that minimizes the perceptual dissimilarity of the latent space embedding of the synthesized and real image at different layers in the network have shown to be powerful tools towards better multi modal learning techniques. In general, our overall approach was aimed at improving target detection systems and the visual appeal of synthesized images while incorporating multiple attribute assignment to the generator without compromising the identity of the synthesized image. We synthesized sketches using XDOG filter for the CelebA, Multi-modal and CelebA-HQ datasets and from an auxiliary generator trained on sketches from CUHK, IIT-D and FERET datasets. Our results overall for different model applications are impressive compared to current state of the art

    Face sketch recognition using deep learning

    Face sketch recognition refers to automatically identifying a person from a set of facial photos using a face sketch. This thesis focuses on matching facial images between front face photos and front face hand-drawn sketches, and between front face photos and front face composite sketches by software. Because different visual domains, different image forms, and different collection methods exist between the matching image pairs, face sketch recognition is more difficult than traditional facial recognition. In this thesis, three novel deep learning models are presented to increase recognition accuracy on face photo-sketch datasets. An improved Siamese network combined with features extracted from an encoder-decoder network is proposed to extract more correlated features from facial photos and the corresponding face sketches. After that, attention modules are proposed to extract features from the same location in the photos and the sketches. In the third method, in order to reduce the difference between different visual domains, the images are transferred into a graph to increase the relationship for different face attributes and facial landmarks. Meanwhile, the graph neural network is utilized to learn the weights of neighbors adaptively. The first is to fuse more image features from the Siamese network and encoder-decoder network for increased the recognition results. Moreover, the attention modules can fix the similarity positions from different domain images to extract the correlated features. The visualized feature maps exhibit the correlated features which are extracted from the photo and the corresponding face sketch. In addition, a stable deep learning model based on graph structure is introduced to capture the topology of the graph and the relationship after images have been mapped into the graph structure for reducing the gap between face photos and face sketches. The experimental results show that the recognition accuracy of our proposed deep learning models can achieve the state-of-the-art on composite face sketch datasets. Meanwhile, the recognition results on hand-drawn face sketch datasets exceed other deep learning methods
