This is the post-print (final draft post-refereeing) version of the article. Copyright @ 2007 Elsevier Inc.Video summaries provide condensed and succinct representations of the content of a video stream through a combination of still images, video segments, graphical representations and textual descriptors. This paper presents a conceptual framework for video summarisation derived from the research literature and used as a means for surveying the research literature. The framework distinguishes between video summarisation techniques (the methods used to process content from a source video stream to achieve a summarisation of that stream) and video summaries (outputs of video summarisation techniques). Video summarisation techniques are considered within three broad categories: internal (analyse information sourced directly from the video stream), external (analyse information not sourced directly from the video stream) and hybrid (analyse a combination of internal and external information). Video summaries are considered as a function of the type of content they are derived from (object, event, perception or feature based) and the functionality offered to the user for their consumption (interactive or static, personalised or generic). It is argued that video summarisation would benefit from greater incorporation of external information, particularly user based information that is unobtrusively sourced, in order to overcome longstanding challenges such as the semantic gap and providing video summaries that have greater relevance to individual users

Predicting Good Configurations for GitHub and Stack Overflow Topic Models

Software repositories contain large amounts of textual data, ranging from source code comments and issue descriptions to questions, answers, and comments on Stack Overflow. To make sense of this textual data, topic modelling is frequently used as a text-mining tool for the discovery of hidden semantic structures in text bodies. Latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) is a commonly used topic model that aims to explain the structure of a corpus by grouping texts. LDA requires multiple parameters to work well, and there are only rough and sometimes conflicting guidelines available on how these parameters should be set. In this paper, we contribute (i) a broad study of parameters to arrive at good local optima for GitHub and Stack Overflow text corpora, (ii) an a-posteriori characterisation of text corpora related to eight programming languages, and (iii) an analysis of corpus feature importance via per-corpus LDA configuration. We find that (1) popular rules of thumb for topic modelling parameter configuration are not applicable to the corpora used in our experiments, (2) corpora sampled from GitHub and Stack Overflow have different characteristics and require different configurations to achieve good model fit, and (3) we can predict good configurations for unseen corpora reliably. These findings support researchers and practitioners in efficiently determining suitable configurations for topic modelling when analysing textual data contained in software repositories.Comment: to appear as full paper at MSR 2019, the 16th International Conference on Mining Software Repositorie

Designing and implementing a tool to transform source code to UML diagrams

    Get PDF
Currently, reverse engineering is considered as a significant process to extract the design information and abstractions of a system from the present software. The extracted source codes have been converted into a certain structure to be easily analyzed in the following procedure. For facilitating the software process development, it might be optimum to have tools beingcertain which generate automatically or help UML generating models from the codes as a source. The current study focuses on the reverse engineering process regarding the python and java source codes to the behavior diagrams: the use case and the activity diagrams which might be of high importance in the process of software maintenance. This approach is carried out in the current study in the application referred to as the RCUML tool with the use of the python language which helped in understanding python and java source codes in the software application, and enabling visualization regarding the software behavior

The programming-like-analysis of an innovative media tool

This paper describes a case study in which evaluation techniques have been developed and applied to a novel commercially developed tool for supporting efficiency and effectiveness of a digital film production processes. The tool is based upon a familiar concept in digital publishing that of separating style from content, and as such, it represents a challenge for intended end users since it moves them away from traditional working practices and towards programming-like-activity. Two alternative user interfaces have been developed following a commercial development route. Approaches to analyzing the effectiveness of the tool and its interfaces prior to its widespread adoption are described and the conclusions from this analysis are illustrated and discussed

Reverse Engineering and Testing of Rich Internet Applications

    Get PDF
The World Wide Web experiences a continuous and constant evolution, where new initiatives, standards, approaches and technologies are continuously proposed for developing more effective and higher quality Web applications. To satisfy the growing request of the market for Web applications, new technologies, frameworks, tools and environments that allow to develop Web and mobile applications with the least effort and in very short time have been introduced in the last years. These new technologies have made possible the dawn of a new generation of Web applications, named Rich Internet Applications (RIAs), that offer greater usability and interactivity than traditional ones. This evolution has been accompanied by some drawbacks that are mostly due to the lack of applying well-known software engineering practices and approaches. As a consequence, new research questions and challenges have emerged in the field of web and mobile applications maintenance and testing. The research activity described in this thesis has addressed some of these topics with the specific aim of proposing new and effective solutions to the problems of modelling, reverse engineering, comprehending, re-documenting and testing existing RIAs. Due to the growing relevance of mobile applications in the renewed Web scenarios, the problem of testing mobile applications developed for the Android operating system has been addressed too, in an attempt of exploring and proposing new techniques of testing automation for these type of applications

Hybrid ASR for Resource-Constrained Robots: HMM - Deep Learning Fusion

This paper presents a novel hybrid Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) system designed specifically for resource-constrained robots. The proposed approach combines Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) with deep learning models and leverages socket programming to distribute processing tasks effectively. In this architecture, the HMM-based processing takes place within the robot, while a separate PC handles the deep learning model. This synergy between HMMs and deep learning enhances speech recognition accuracy significantly. We conducted experiments across various robotic platforms, demonstrating real-time and precise speech recognition capabilities. Notably, the system exhibits adaptability to changing acoustic conditions and compatibility with low-power hardware, making it highly effective in environments with limited computational resources. This hybrid ASR paradigm opens up promising possibilities for seamless human-robot interaction. In conclusion, our research introduces a pioneering dimension to ASR techniques tailored for robotics. By employing socket programming to distribute processing tasks across distinct devices and strategically combining HMMs with deep learning models, our hybrid ASR system showcases its potential to enable robots to comprehend and respond to spoken language adeptly, even in environments with restricted computational resources. This paradigm sets a innovative course for enhancing human-robot interaction across a wide range of real-world scenarios.Comment: To be published in IEEE Access, 9 pages, 14 figures, Received valuable support from CCBD PESU, for associated code, see https://github.com/AnshulRanjan2004/PyHM

This aim of paper is to presents the development of a multidisciplinary project carried out by the cooperation between Politecnico di Torino and ITHACA (Information Technology for Humanitarian Assistance, Cooperation and Action). The goal of the project was the training in geospatial data acquiring and processing for students attending Architecture and Engineering Courses, in order to start up a team of "volunteer mappers". Indeed, the project is aimed to document the environmental and built heritage subject to disaster; the purpose is to improve the capabilities of the actors involved in the activities connected in geospatial data collection, integration and sharing. The proposed area for testing the training activities is the Cinque Terre National Park, registered in the World Heritage List since 1997. The area was affected by flood on the 25th of October 2011. According to other international experiences, the group is expected to be active after emergencies in order to upgrade maps, using data acquired by typical geomatic methods and techniques such as terrestrial and aerial Lidar, close-range and aerial photogrammetry, topographic and GNSS instruments etc.; or by non conventional systems and instruments such us UAV, mobile mapping etc. The ultimate goal is to implement a WebGIS platform to share all the data collected with local authorities and the Civil Protectio
