An Application of Augmented Reality (AR) in the Teaching of an Arc Welding Robot

    Get PDF
Augmented Reality (AR) is an emerging technology that utilizes computer vision methods to overlay virtual objects onto the real world scene so as to make them appear to co-exist with the real objects. Its main objective is to enhance the user’s interaction with the real world by providing the right information needed to perform a certain task. Applications of this technology in manufacturing include maintenance, assembly and telerobotics. In this paper, we explore the potential of teaching a robot to perform an arc welding task in an AR environment. We present the motivation, features of a system using the popular ARToolkit package, and a discussion on the issues and implications of our research.

Multimodal Mixed Reality Impact on a Hand Guiding Task with a Holographic Cobot

In the context of industrial production, a worker that wants to program a robot using the hand-guidance technique needs that the robot is available to be programmed and not in operation. This means that production with that robot is stopped during that time. A way around this constraint is to perform the same manual guidance steps on a holographic representation of the digital twin of the robot, using augmented reality technologies. However, this presents the limitation of a lack of tangibility of the visual holograms that the user tries to grab. We present an interface in which some of the tangibility is provided through ultrasound-based mid-air haptics actuation. We report a user study that evaluates the impact that the presence of such haptic feedback may have on a pick-and-place task of the wrist of a holographic robot arm which we found to be beneficial

    Get PDF
Augmented Reality (AR) is an innovative technology which allows superimposing, to the normal reality perceived through our senses, information and virtual objects computer-generated and displayed on specific devices (e.g. Head Mounted Display). Maintenance, control and management of complex systems, such as machine tools with numerical control or flexible manufacturing systems, has significantly increased the level of skill and experience required to operators who act in such systems, making it crucial for a company to provide them adequate training. Training is an area that, for its characteristics, makes it advisable the use of AR. The operator is guided step by step in performing the various operations composing the task that he has to perform, thus working in complete safety and obtaining a standardization of the training that is not available with the classic on-the-job training method. In this PhD thesis it is described the research aimed to study the applicability of AR technology to training and support of workers within production systems in order to improve the human-machine interaction. Topics related to the practical implementation of AR technologies, the interaction of the operators with suitable devices, i.e. possible hardware configurations and modes to convey information, have been deeply analyzed, and various applications have been realized in the field of production systems. In conclusion, it was investigated the integration between AR and wireless sensor networks for operator feedback
